Bio

The WooSox logo features a smiling face holding a bat with a heart in the middle. In the design process, the logo pays tribute to two of Worcester’s most significant historical achievements. Both the happy face and the modern valentine have their roots in this city.

From Worcester South High School to Worcester Art Museum School, he completed his education. The State Life Mutual Assurance Company of Worcester commissioned Ball to create an insignia for the company as a way to boost morale following the merging of two insurance companies.

A joyful facial sketch with a large right eye was drawn by Ball in just 10 minutes. Neither Ball nor State Life had any sort of copyright protection on it. State Life first purchased one hundred of Ball’s smiling face buttons. The company ordered 10,000 buttons at a time to meet up with demand as soon as clients started requesting them. Smiling faces became ubiquitous throughout the 1970s, cementing the decade’s image as one that embodied optimism and goodwill.

His happy face sign had been widely commercialised, and Harvey Ball was afraid that it had lost some of its significance. As a reminder to spread joy and smiles throughout the year, he established World Smile Day in 1999. On this particular day, the tagline is “Do something nice for someone. Make just one person happy by doing something pleasant for them.” For many years to come, the smiley face logo of their favourite baseball team will bring a grin to their faces.

Valentine cards as we know them today got their start in the “Heart of Commonwealth.” On August 17, 1828, a woman named Esther Howland was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. Her handcrafted Valentine from England in 1847 was both pricey and gorgeous when it arrived after her graduation in 1847. They were persuaded to import supplies from England by her father, who had a stationery business, so that she could make lovely Valentine’s Day cards for the public to distribute.

When Howland decided to operate a shop on the third floor of her family’s house in Worcester, she hired an all-female staff. Once they started producing thousands of cards, they couldn’t be stopped. A pioneering female businesswoman, Esther Howland paved the way for Worcester and the city’s heart to be recognised on the national stage. Several notable baseball inventions and firsts may be traced back to Worcester in the city.

Baseball’s first perfect game was thrown at Worcester’s Agricultural Fairgrounds, now home to Becker College. A Brown University student named J. Lee Richmond threw a perfect game on June 12th, 1880, in a National League clash against the Cleveland Indians. The media dubbed Richmond’s victory “the greatest magnificent game ever recorded.”

Any study of Worcester’s baseball history would be incomplete without a mention of Holy Cross baseball. The Crusaders, led by legendary player and manager Jack Barry, were the only team from New England to win the College World Series in 1952. Ted Williams hit his first Red Sox home run in a preseason game against Holy Cross. Over 100 Crusaders have gone on to sign professional contracts since the programme began in 2004. On the show, Barry and Jesse Burkett are only two of many baseball legends.

Jack Barry, a native Connecticutan, grew up in Meriden. Prior to his excellent collegiate career, he attended Holy Cross preparatory school for two years.’ The Philadelphia Athletics signed Barry after he graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. It is thanks to Barry’s work with Mack that the A’s won three World Series and four pennants between 1910 and 1914.

The opposing team’s manager, Frank Chance, lauded Barry as the best shortstop he had ever seen during the 1910 World Series. It was in the United States and Canada that Barry took home his final two world titles before retiring. As part of the Red Sox’s World Series victories in 1915 and 1916, he was traded to Boston. Upon retiring as a player, Barry returned to Worcester to serve as the school’s head coach. During his 40-year tenure as head coach of Holy Cross, his team won the 1952 national championship. Jesse Burkett spent one season with the Worcester squad in his early career before deciding to make Worcester his permanent home.

Burkett signed a contract with the Worcester Atlantic Association squad in 1889. After an outstanding season, Burkett was only signed by four major league teams. For the third time in his career, he was named National League hitter of the year, and he did so twice.
