Bio

Duane Eugene Kuiper, often known by his stage moniker “Kuip,” was born in the United States on June 19, 1950. He played second base for the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball. Since 1986, he has been a radio and television announcer for the Giants, and he and his buddy and former colleague Mike Krukow make up the well-known pair “Kruk and Kuip.” He temporarily left the Giants in 1993 to work for the Colorado Rockies during their expansion, but he later came back. Kuiper was raised on a 300-acre  farm in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, close to Racine, together with his two brothers and one sister. At Jerome I. Case High School in Racine, Wisconsin, he participated in baseball. Kuiper attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, where he was a Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity member and graduated. Dan Radisson, a seasoned lower league and big league coach, shared his room with him.

Kuiper was selected by the New York Yankees in the twelfth round of the 1968 Major League Baseball Draft out of Jerome I. Case High School, but he decided to enroll at Indian Hills Community College. While a student at Indian Hills, he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, and Seattle Pilots, but he didn’t sign with any of them. He was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round of the 1971 June Secondary Amateur Draft after a season at Southern Illinois University, but he once again declined to sign. Kuiper ultimately decided to sign with the Cleveland Indians, who selected him in the first round of the 1972 January Secondary Amateur Draft, after receiving his degree from Southern Illinois.

Despite spending some time in 1975 with the triple-A Oklahoma City 89ers, Kuiper spent most of the season in the main leagues, sharing time at second base with Brohamer and hitting second in manager Frank Robinson’s batting order. In order to give Kuiper a position to play every day, the Indians traded Brohamer to the White Sox after the season. While still a footballer, Kuiper launched his broadcasting career by presenting his own KNBR radio program from 1982 until 1985. Kuiper gave analysis for the Giants from 1986 through 1992 after he stopped playing baseball. Kuiper departed for a year-long stay with the Colorado Rockies during the 1993 season due to uncertainties surrounding the Giants’ potential transfer to Florida.  In 1994, Kuiper made his way back to the Giants’ broadcast booth, where he has been ever since.

Since radio announcer, Dave Flemming’s microphone went out just as Bonds hit his 715th home run to surpass Babe Ruth, Kuiper’s call is regarded as the iconic one for the home run. Barry Bonds’ 756th home run, which beat Hank Aaron’s record, was announced on TV by Kuiper. Bonds hit his 756th career home run, according to Kuiper:

Despite being primarily a slap hitter, Kuiper kept up a respectable batting average and demonstrated that he was an above-average fielder by leading second basemen in the American League in fielding % in 1976 and 1979. On August 29, 1977, he hit the lone home run of his career off of Chicago White Sox pitcher Steve Stone.  In the live-ball era, Kuiper has the big league record for the most career at-bats with precisely one home run.  Kuiper’s extraordinary performance was documented on camera since the game in question was broadcast on national television.

Kuiper provided the lone run for either club on May 30, 1977, during Dennis Eckersley’s no-hitter against the California Angels. In a game against the Yankees on July 27, 1978, at Yankee Stadium, Kuiper hit two triples with bases loaded. He and Bill Bruton and Elmer Valo are the only three Major League players to have achieved this accomplishment.

With Kuiper at second base, Len Barker threw a perfect game on May 15, 1981, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Kuiper contributed to the attempt by fielding five ground balls. The Indians acquired Alan Bannister from the White Sox soon after Kuiper had a knee injury that kept him out for most of the 1980 campaign. In 1981, the two platooned second. Kuiper was traded to the San Francisco Giants for pitcher Ed Whitson after the season.

Before being called up in September of 1974, Kuiper played three seasons in the Indians’ farm system, batting.295 with six home runs and 148 runs batted in. As a defensive replacement for Jack Brohamer in the ninth inning on September 9, he made his big league debut. In his lone at-bat, he grounded into a double play.  He did much better in his subsequent bat appearances, with nine singles, two doubles, two walks, and four RBIs over the course of 24 trips to the plate.
