Gwinnett Stripers Bio

The Gwinnett Stripers are a Minor League Baseball club that competes in the International League. They are the Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and are a part of the International League. Coolray Field is located in unincorporated Gwinnett County, Georgia, which is a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. All of their home games are played there. They got their names from the striped bass that are often caught in the area since fishing is such a popular activity there.

After the International League franchise known as the Richmond Braves moved away from their previous home in Richmond, Virginia, a new club was formed in 2009. In 2018, they changed their name from the Gwinnett Braves, which was the name of their big league affiliate, to their present name. As part of the reorganization of Minor League Baseball that was implemented by the MLB in 2021, the Stripers were transferred from the IL to the Triple-A East.

However, in 2022, this league was given the new moniker of the International League. The franchise can trace its beginnings back to 1901, when the Atlanta Crackers were established, making the relocation to Gwinnett County seem like something of a coming full circle for the organization. In 1965, they rose to the position of being the most successful affiliate of the Milwaukee Braves at the time. In 1966, the Braves relocated from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Atlanta, Georgia. At the same time, they relocated the Crackers to Richmond, Virginia. Once there, the minor league organization adopted the name of the Braves as its own.

On April 9, 2009, the Gwinnett Braves played their first game at Knights Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. They prevailed against the Charlotte Knights by a score of 9-1. On April 17, they played their first game inside their own stadium. The Braves were defeated by the Norfolk Tides, who were playing in front of 10,427 fans. The final score was 7–4. Their first victory at home came three nights later when they beat the Durham Bulls by a score of 5–2 in that game. The Braves finished their first season with an overall record of 81–63, which was good enough for second place in the South Division, two games behind Durham. They were led by manager Dave Brundage and finished in second place in their division, however, they did earn a position in the wild card playoffs for the International League. They were ousted by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, who won 3–1, and advanced to the playoffs.

The Braves failed not qualify for the playoffs until 2016, despite the fact that they came in second place by a razor-thin margin in 2011 and 2015. The squad was headed by Manager Brian Snitker until May 17, when he was elevated and given the position of managing a big league club in Atlanta. His successors on an interim basis, Rick Albert and John Moses, guided the 2016 Braves to the South Division championship with a record of 65–78, which was the best record in the division. They advanced to the finals of the Governor’s Cup playoffs by defeating the Columbus Clippers in the semifinals by a score of 3–1 and then faced the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in the finals, where they were beaten by a score of 3–1 and did not win the International League title.

Before the start of the 2018 season, the Braves changed their name to the Gwinnett Stripers. The name alludes to the striped bass that is caught in the vicinity of Lake Lanier, and it also makes a reference to the abundance of opportunities for engaging in outdoor activities in the area. In order to choose the moniker, a competition to “name the team” was organized. “Big Mouths,” “Buttons,” “Gobblers,” “Hush Puppies,” “Lambchops,” and “Sweet Teas” were some of the entries that made it to the final round. The group in charge of naming the team at first went with Big Mouths, which is a reference to largemouth bass. However, they later came to the conclusion that Stripers would be a better match for their vision of the club’s identity.

Under the direction of Damon Berryhill, the 2019 Stripers finished with an 80–59 record, which was good enough to win the South Division. They were ousted from the playoffs by Columbus, who won the game 3–1 and advanced to the championships. The International League Manager of the Year Award will go to Berryhill since he was chosen for the honor.

Because to the COVID-19 epidemic, the beginning of the 2020 season was first pushed back, and then it was officially canceled on June 30. Following the conclusion of the 2020 season, Major League Baseball took ownership of Minor League Baseball in an effort to raise player compensation, bring facility standards up to date, and minimize the amount of time spent traveling. The Atlanta Braves have decided to keep their Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett. However, as a result of the dissolution of the International League, the Stripers joined the other former IL clubs in moving up to the Triple-A East. Gwinnett finished the season with a record of 68–51, which was enough for third place in the Southeastern Division.

Instead of holding playoffs to decide who would win the league, the club that finished with the best record during the regular season was given the title of champion. However, as a playoff tournament known as the Triple-A Final Stretch, ten games that had been postponed from the beginning of the season were reinserted into the schedule. This tournament included all 30 Triple-A teams competing against one another for the greatest winning percentage. Gwinnett ended the tournament with a record of 3–7, which was good enough for 25th place. In the year 2022, the Triple-A East was given the moniker International League, which was the name that had traditionally been given to the regional circuit previous to the restructuring that took place in 2021.

The distance between the home stadium of the Stripers’ Triple-A affiliate and the home stadium of their major-league parent club, which is situated in Cobb County’s Truist Park, is the third smallest of any Triple-A affiliate and its major-league parent. Only the St. Paul Saints, who are located 12 miles east of Minneapolis, and the Tacoma Rainiers, which are located 26 miles south of Seattle, are physically located closer to their respective Major League Baseball parent teams than the other minor league affiliates. The Braves and the Stripers have been affiliated with one another for 57 seasons as of the 2021 season, making theirs the longest-running affiliation arrangement in Triple-A.
