Cleveland Guardians Bio

The Cleveland Guardians are a professional baseball club from the United States that calls Cleveland its home. The Guardians are a baseball team that is a part of Major League Baseball and belongs to the American League Central division of the American League. Since the year 1994, all of the team’s home games have been played at Progressive Field. Since its inception as a Major League club in 1901, the team has won a total of 12 major championships, including 11 Central Division crowns, six American League pennants, and two World Series triumphs.

The franchise has not won the World Series since 1948, making it the club with the longest ongoing title drought among the 30 active Major League teams. The name of the squad is a reference to the Guardians of Traffic, which are eight monolithic Art Deco sculptures created by Henry Hering in 1932 and installed on the Hope Memorial Bridge in the city of Cleveland, which is near to Progressive Field. The moniker “Slider” has been given to the team’s mascot. Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona serves as the home base for the club during the spring training season.

The Grand Rapids Rippers were a minor league club that was headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan and competed in the Western League when the franchise was first established in 1894. Following their move to Cleveland in the year 1900, the club became known as the Cleveland Lake Shores. Prior to the start of the 1900 season, the Western League changed its name to the American League while maintaining its position as a minor league. Cleveland was one of the American League’s eight founding teams in the year 1901 when the American League officially became a major league. The team’s original name was the Cleveland Bluebirds or Blues, but in the year 1902, they were also known as the Cleveland Bronchos in an unofficial capacity.

The squad was known as the Cleveland Napoleons or the Naps beginning in 1903, and the name was given in honor of the team captain, Nap Lajoie. After Lajoie left the club at the end of the 1914 season, the owner, Charles Somers, asked the baseball writers to come up with a new moniker for the team. They adopted the name Cleveland Indians, which is supposedly a reference to the moniker that fans gave to the Cleveland Spiders when Louis Sockalexis, a Native American, was playing for the club. At the time, the Spiders were known as the Cleveland Spiders.

The usage of that moniker persisted for more than a century after it was first used. The Indians were referred to as the “Tribe” and the “Wahoos” rather often, with the latter moniker being a reference to their longstanding insignia, Chief Wahoo. The squad stopped using the moniker Indians after the 2021 season and were renamed the Guardians for the 2022 season after it came under scrutiny as part of the Native American mascot debate.

The club won 22 straight games between August 24 and September 14, 2017, tying for the greatest winning streak in the history of the American League and moving into second place for the longest winning streak in the history of Major League Baseball. Between the years 1865 and 1868, the Forest Citys Club was an amateur baseball organization. After the success of the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, which was the first completely professional club, Cleveland was one of many towns that formed professional baseball teams during the 1869 season. The squad was sometimes referred to as the Forest Citys in the press both before and after the year 1870. This was done in a manner similar to how the club from Chicago was occasionally referred to as The Chicagos.

The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NA), which was the first professional league, welcomed the Forest Citys into its ranks in the year 1871. In the end, two of the league’s western teams went bankrupt during the first season, while the Chicago Fire left that city’s White Stockings in such financial ruin that they were unable to field a team again until 1874. In 1872, the year when the NA ceased operations, Cleveland served as the organization’s westernmost station. The Cleveland franchise completed its whole schedule up to July 19, then played two games against the Boston franchise in the middle of August before disbanding at the conclusion of the season. After missing out on major league baseball for two years in a row, Cleveland finally got a franchise in the American Association in the year 1887.

In 1889, after Allegheny’s departure from the American Association for the National League, Cleveland became the next team to leave the AA and join the NL. The Cleveland baseball team, whose nickname was the Spiders, gradually rose to prominence as a dominant force in the league. The Cleveland Spiders relocated their ballpark to League Park in 1891, and the ballpark would go on to become the home of professional baseball in Cleveland for the following 55 years. The Spiders became a contender in the middle of the 1890s under the direction of Ohio native Cy Young. They participated in the Temple Cup Series, which was the equivalent of the modern World Series at the time, twice and won it in 1895. Following this triumph, the team’s performance started to decline, and it suffered a significant setback when the Robison brothers were the owners.

The owner of the Spiders, Frank Robison, also purchased the St. Louis Browns before the 1899 season, giving him ownership of two different teams at the same time. The team once known as the Browns were rebranded as the “Perfectos” and refilled with talent from Cleveland. A few short weeks before the start of the season, the majority of the better Spiders were traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. These players included three players who would go on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame: Cy Young, Jesse Burkett, and Bobby Wallace. St. Louis’s attempts to build a dominant Perfectos squad via roster manipulations were unsuccessful, as the team finished sixth in both 1899 and 1900.

The Spiders were left with what was effectively a lineup from a lower minor league, and they started losing games at an unprecedented rate. Because they had so few spectators at their home games, they were nicknamed as “The Wanderers” because they spent so much of the season away from their stadium. The squad finished the year in 12th place, 84 games behind the leader, and with the poorest record in the history of the franchise with a record of 20–134. Following the conclusion of the 1899 season, the National League dissolved four clubs, one of which was the franchise for the Spiders. The terrible 1899 season would actually prove to be a stepping stone toward a brighter future for Cleveland supporters the following year.
