Cleveland Cavaliers Bio

The Cleveland Cavaliers, sometimes known simply as the Cavs, are a professional basketball club from the United States that plays its home games in Cleveland. The Cavaliers are a team that participates in the National Basketball Association and are a part of the division that is in charge of the Eastern Conference Central. The franchise joined the National Basketball Association in 1970 as one of three expansion teams, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Buffalo Braves. The Cleveland Arena played host to the club’s home contests from 1970 to 1974, after which they moved to the Richfield Coliseum, where they remained until 1994. Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, located in the heart of downtown Cleveland, has been the home court for Cleveland Cavaliers games since 1994. This arena is also used by the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League. Since March 2005, Dan Gilbert has been the owner of the club.

The Cavaliers suffered in their early years, finishing no higher than sixth in the Eastern Conference during any of their first five seasons. The Cavaliers started their first season by losing their first 15 games, and they continued to struggle throughout their early years. In 1976, the club had its first winning season and made its debut in the postseason, where it went on to progress all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. This year also marked the first time in the history of the organization that they won their division. In the year 1980, Ted Stepien became the owner of the franchise. During the time when Stepien was the owner of the team, there were a total of six different head coaches, dubious trades and draft selections, and low attendance, which led to a loss of $15 million in financial value. The Cavaliers experienced a 24-game losing skid that spanned the 1981–82 and 1982–83 seasons, which contributed to their 66–180 record throughout the course of those three seasons. In 1983, George and Gordon Gund became the new owners of the team.

The Cavaliers were a consistent postseason competitor during the second part of the 1980s and the majority of the 1990s, spearheaded by stars such as Mark Price and Brad Daugherty. In 1992, they made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. However, after the team’s presence in the playoffs during the 1997–1998 season, the Cavaliers went on to have six straight losing seasons in which they were not eligible for the playoffs. LeBron James was picked by Cleveland in the 2003 NBA draft after the Cavaliers were given the opportunity to choose the first overall player. By 2005, the Cavaliers had once again established themselves as a perennial playoff contender thanks to James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

After capturing their first Eastern Conference title in team history in 2007, they qualified for the NBA Finals for the first time. After three more seasons in which he was unable to make it back to the NBA Finals, LeBron James signed with the Miami Heat in the year 2010. The outcome of this was that the Cavaliers concluded the 2010–11 season in last place in the conference and endured a losing streak of 26 games, which is the second-longest in the history of the NBA. The franchise did, however, win the first overall choice in the NBA draft lottery three times between 2010 and 2014, the first time being in 2011 when they picked Kyrie Irving and the other two times being in 2013 and 2014.

James returned to the Cavaliers in 2014 after spending the previous four seasons with the Heat, during which he won back-to-back championships in the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons. Since his return, the Cavaliers have been in four consecutive NBA Finals under James’ direction. The Cavaliers made history in 2016 by winning their first NBA Championship, making it the first time Cleveland has won a major sports trophy since 1964. The triumph of the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals was the first time in the history of the Finals that a team has come back to win the series after falling down 3–1. The Cavaliers have made it to the postseason 23 times, during which time they have won seven Central Division championships, five Eastern Conference championships, and one NBA championship.

The ownership of Ted Stepien in the early 1980s was a defining factor. During Stepien’s stint as general manager of the Cavaliers, the team developed the habit of exchanging future draft selections for below-average senior players. His most significant trade saw the Los Angeles Lakers acquiring Don Ford and the 22nd overall selection in 1980 in exchange for a first-round choice in the next year’s draft. As a direct response to the business deals conducted by Stepien, the National Basketball Association enacted a rule known as the “Stepien Rule,” which prevents clubs from exchanging first-round draft selections in consecutive seasons.

During the three years that Stepien was the owner of the Cavaliers, the team had a record of 66–180, had the worst attendance in the league, and had a loss of $15 million. During this time period, the Cavaliers had a total of six different head coaches, including four during the 1981–1982 season. The club concluded with a record of 15–67, and from March to November 1982, they were on a 24-game losing streak, which was the longest losing run in the history of the NBA at the time, and In the year 1983, George and Gordon Gund bought the Cavaliers from Stepien.

Between the years 1985 and 1998, the Cavaliers qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. The Cavaliers had their most successful season to date in the 1988–1989 campaign, as they finished the regular season with a record of 57–25 and were led by head coach Lenny Wilkens and players Brad Daugherty, Mark Price, Ron Harper, and Larry Nance. In the 1991–92 season, they produced their second consecutive 57–win campaign and advanced all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite this, the Cavaliers did not even make it to the postseason once between the years 1999 and 2005.

At the end of the 2002–2003 NBA season, the Cavaliers ended with a record of 17–65, which was tied for the lowest in the league. The Cavaliers held the first overall choice in the 2003 NBA draft and used it to choose future NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James. James is a native of Akron, which is located close. The deal to sell the franchise to tycoon Dan Gilbert for $375 million was finalized on January 3, 2005.

The transaction was completed successfully on March 1, 2005. That same year, the squad brought on Mike Brown as their head coach and Danny Ferry as their general manager. By acquiring players like Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, and Anderson Varajao, the Cavaliers were able to construct a squad that was centered on LeBron James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. As a result of this new management, the Cavaliers qualified for the playoffs on five consecutive occasions between the years 2006 and 2010, progressing to at least the second round on each occasion.[38] In the 2006–07 season, the Cavaliers made it all the way to the NBA Finals for the first time in team history, but they were defeated in four games by the San Antonio Spurs.

The Cavaliers finished the 2008–2009 season with a franchise-record 66 wins, including a franchise-best 39–2 record at home. However, they were eliminated by the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals. After suffering a defeat at the hands of the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs during the 2009–10 season, the Cleveland Cavaliers were unable to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals despite the acquisition of four-time NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal.
