It is the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos are a Minor League Baseball club from Pensacola, Florida. They compete in the Double-A South division. Captain Fetterman Field serves as their home stadium and serves as the team’s headquarters. They are situated in Pensacola, Florida. The Carolina Mudcats were a minor league baseball club based in Zebulon, North Carolina, that moved to Pensacola in 2012 after spending the previous season there. In the past, they were a part of the Southern League, which ran from 2012 until 2020. Originally known as the Charleston White Sox of the South Atlantic League (now the Southern League), the franchise relocated several times, including stops in Charleston, South Carolina (1959–1961); Savannah, Georgia (1962); Lynchburg, Virginia (1963–1955); and Evansville, Indiana (1966–1968) before settling in Columbus, Georgia in 1969 to play at Golden Park. The franchise has played its home games there since 1969.
For much of their existence, the Columbus Astros were known as such until 1988, when it became an affiliate of the Houston Astros. Following the 1988 season, new owner Steve Bryant organized a contest among season ticket holders to rename the club, and as a result, the Columbus Mudcats were established in 1989. With the relocation to Zebulon, North Carolina in 1991, Bryant renamed the team the Carolina Mudcats to reflect the new location. Five County Stadium served as the team’s home field in Zebulon, where they won Southern League titles in 1995 and 2003.
Quint Studer, the owner of the Pensacola Pelicans independent baseball club, purchased the Mudcats franchise in 2010, completing a lengthy sequence of transactions and acquisitions that brought affiliated Double-A baseball to Pensacola for the first time. His first sale was to a group in Amarillo, Texas, who renamed the team the Amarillo Sox when he retired from the Pelicans. It was the success of the Pelicans under the leadership of J. C. Evers that helped to establish Pensacola as a viable minor league community. Studer went on to own the Carolina Mudcats organization.
Nonetheless, in order to complete this transaction, he had to orchestrate the relocation of the Kinston Indians to Zebulon, where they took on the name and branding of the Carolina Mudcats. Additional compensation was provided to the Mobile Bay Bears by Studer since Pensacola is located inside the franchise region of the Bears. A total of $2 million was spent on the arrangements. During a fan contest sponsored by Wendy’s in partnership with the Pensacola News Journal, the moniker for the Blue Wahoos was chosen. It is a reference to the wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), a fish species found in the area.
These are the team colors for the Houston Texans: Neon red, Gulf Coast royal, Blue Angel navy, and Tin Roof. It was formally announced on May 23 and the logo and colors were unveiled on November 18 of the same year. The club was voted the Southern League’s Organization of the Year during its debut season, during which Billy Hamilton broke the all-time single-season stolen base record in professional baseball. Billy Hamilton broke the mark in the first game of the season. Former Masters champion Bubba Watson joined the company as a co-owner in January 2015
As the recipient of Baseball America’s renowned Bob Freitas Award for the best overall franchise among the nation’s 30 affiliates at Double-A, the Blue Wahoos were selected as the best overall franchise in the country in 2016. Baseball Winter Meetings were held in the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, which is just outside of Washington D.C., and the announcement was made there. They signed a two-year player development contract with the Minnesota Twins that will run from 2019 to 2020.The start of the 2020 season was initially postponed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was finally cancelled on June 30 because to the outbreak.
Beginning in 2021, the Blue Wahoos will be affiliated with the Miami Marlins, who will serve as their home team. As a consequence of Major League Baseball’s restructure of Minor League Baseball in 2021, the Blue Wahoos were reassigned to the Double-A South division, which now has eight teams.
