Nick Leyva Bio

Nicholas Tomas Leyva is an American former professional baseball player, coach, and manager. He was born on August 16, 1953, in the United States. After Leyva finished his playing career in Minor League Baseball, he transitioned into the coaching ranks of the league. The St. Louis Cardinals, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Pittsburgh Pirates were among the teams that he coached while working in Major League Baseball. Between the years 1989 and the beginning of 1991, Leyva oversaw the Philadelphia Phillies as their manager. After being picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 24th round in the 1975 Major League Baseball Draft, Leyva, who is of Mexican-American heritage and was born in Ontario, California, attended the University of LaVerne. The Cardinals chose him after he had played 561st overall.

He was a right-handed batter and right-handed thrower, stood 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighed 165 pounds. He played infield for the team. He spent three years in the Cardinals’ minor league farm system, during which time he played in and batted in 253 games.267 with 208 hits, eight home runs, and 109 runs driven in for a total of 109 RBI. At the age of 24, Leyva started his career as a manager in 1978 with the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League, who played at the rookie level. By 1983, he had risen through the ranks to become the manager of the Double-A farm club for the parent Cardinals organization, the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League. Following his time as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Triple-A farm club, the Syracuse Chiefs, Leyva served as the third-base coach for the Blue Jays for the first time from July 1993 through 1997.

This was Leyva’s first stint in this role with the Blue Jays. Leyva has spent his entire career as a manager and coach in the big leagues wearing the number 16. The only exception to this rule was his first season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993, when he was forced to wear the number 45 since the number 16 was already in use. Later on, he had positions in the farm system of the Chicago White Sox at a variety of different levels until serving as the third-base coach for the Milwaukee Brewers for one season in 2007. In the 1995-1996 season of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, Leyva managed the team known as the Cardenales de Lara.

He led his team all the way to the finals, where they faced off against the Navegantes del Magallanes and lost in four games to three. In the season 2000-2001, he coached the Cardenales once again, and he led them to their fourth title in Venezuela by beating the club that had upset him four years before in six games. This was his fourth championship overall. After an absence of seven years, he went back to Venezuela to take over as manager of the Navegantes del Magallanes for the 2008-2009 season. However, he was let go after the club finished with a losing record. Al, the younger brother of Leyva, manages the Willmar Stingers, who play in the Northwoods League.

Before the Blue Jays rehired Leyva as their third base coach on June 20, 2008, Cito Gaston replaced John Gibbons as the manager of the team. Prior to that, Leyva was listed as the 2008 manager of the Kingsport Mets of the Appalachian League, which is a rookie-level affiliate of the New York Mets. The Appalachian League is located in Tennessee. On October 30, 2009, Leyva returned to his previous position as the bench coach for the Blue Jays. Brian Butterfield was promoted to take over as the team’s third base coach. Don Wakamatsu, a former manager of the Seattle Mariners, was hired as the new bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays on November 8, 2010, putting an end to Leyva’s time in that role. “It is the defendant’s right to determine what kind of defense he may want to present,” the court said. I want to make sure that the defendant is the one who makes any changes to their plea or additional pleas.”

Leyva is facing several felony charges, including one case of attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of aggravated assault and battery, and one count of strangling of a household member. He is also facing many misdemeanor charges, including domestic abuse, property damage, and breach of peace. According to evidence given earlier by Sublette County Detective Travis Lanning, he was detained on August 31 after he and his spouse, Dr. Buck Wallace, had a civil conversation about getting a divorce. After the conversation, Leyva is said to have assaulted Wallace, damaged Wallace’s phone, and attempted to strangle him. At the preliminary hearing for Leyva, Freeburg made reference to the evidence of Lanning, who suggested that it was possible for Leyva to have taken the high antipsychotic medication Seroquel, which had been given to Wallace.

According to Freeburg, “my client was taking Seroquel at the advice of the alleged victim,” and although Leyva was “incompetent at the time of the incident,” she is now competent. On October 6 and October 28, the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Sublette County, Clayton Melinkovich, took issue with statements made by Freeburg about Seroquel. The judge said that he need a “showing of good cause” and that he would enable Freeburg to attempt to demonstrate it. However, the judge stated that he was unsure if he could rely on the evidence presented during the preliminary hearing.

According to Freeburg, following his arraignment, Leyva felt a sense of dissatisfaction. The judge, Mr. Tyler, said that he detailed each available plea choice individually and that “I did not expressly say he could do both.” “The defendant intended to make the plea, but for reasons that have not been disclosed, he did not,” the court said. “I believe that a good cause has been shown.”

The judge immediately put a hold on the case and the trial processes after Leyva entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental illness to each of the charges. The judge then ordered Leyva to undergo a psychiatric examination. He went on to say that the professionals at Wyoming State Hospital would be the ones to decide when, where, and how the procedure will take place. Leyva was given the position of third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates on November 24, 2011, under the direction of new manager Clint Hurdle. The Pirates made the announcement on November 5, 2014, that Leyva would be moving to the position of first base coach and that Rick Sofield would be switching positions from first base to third base. The Pirates made the announcement that Leyva would no longer be coaching the team on October 22, 2016 and that he had been moved to an advisory role inside the club.

During the years 1984–1988, Leyva was a member of Whitey Herzog’s coaching staff for the major league Cardinals, where he worked for five seasons. He was the first base coach for the Cardinals when they won the National League championship in 1985, and he was the third base coach for the Cardinals when they won the National League championship in 1987.

In 1989, Lee Thomas, who had previously worked with Leyva as farm director in St. Louis, selected Leyva to become the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Thomas was also the general manager of the Phillies at the time. In Leyva’s first season as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, the team finished in last place in the National League East Division with a record of 67 wins and 162 losses. In 1990, his club ended in fourth place and won ten more games than the previous year, but they still finished with a record that was eight games below the.500 line. On April 23, 1991, Leyva was fired from his position as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies after the team lost nine of their first 13 games. His managerial record in the Major Leagues was 148 wins and 189 loses throughout the course of his career.
