Kyle Petty Bio

Kyle Eugene Petty is an American former stock car racing driver and current racing pundit. He was born on June 2, 1960, in the United States. He is the son of racer Richard Petty, the grandson of racer Lee Petty, and the father of racer Adam Petty, who was killed in a collision during practice in May of 2000. Both of his grandfathers were also racers. In his last race, which took place in 2008, Petty drove the No. 45 Dodge Charger for Petty Enterprises, the company for which he had once worked as CEO. Randleman, North Carolina is where Petty first made his appearance on Earth.

At the age of 18, he made his debut in the top league of stock car racing. At the time, Richard Petty held the record for being the youngest driver to win a major-league stock car race when he won the very first race he ever competed in, the 1979 Daytona ARCA 200. He drove one of his father’s old 1978 Dodge Magnum racing cars to victory in the event. Later on in the season, he made his debut in the Winston Cup Series, driving for his family’s team in an STP Dodge Magnum that had been handed down to him and numbered No. 42.

He participated in five races and finished tenth in the 1979 Talladega 500, which was the first series event he had competed in. In 1980, he had a total of fifteen starts in the No. 42, and he finished in the top ten six times, which earned him a points finish of twenty-eighth place. During the first race of the 1981 season, he drove the No. 43 car that belonged to his father. After that, he ran the rest of the season in his usual No. 42 car, finishing in the top ten 10 times and placing twelfth in the points standings. He started the 1982 season with two finishes in the top ten, but later on in the season, he began switching back and forth between his No. 42 and the No. 1 UNO/STP vehicle that was owned by Hoss Ellington.

He finished the season with a point total of 15. 1983 was the year that he became eligible for support from 7-Eleven, and as a result, he changed his number to 7. Even though he only had two finishes in the top 10, he moved up to the twelfth position in the standings. After that season, he had another year in which he finished in the top ten six times, but his point total was lower by three positions. Petty transferred his number and sponsorship to Wood Brothers Racing in 1985, the same year that he had a career-high seven top-five finishes and his first top-ten points finish. The next year, he had his breakthrough season, winning the first race of his career in the notorious 1986 Miller High Life 400 at Richmond. He went on to finish ninth in the standings. In 1987, he changed his number to 21, obtained new sponsorship from Citgo, and won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte.

All of these accomplishments occurred in the same year. In 1988, he was unable to get a victory, which contributed to his falling to thirteenth place in the points standings and ultimately leading to his release from the ride. Petty was able to go back on track in 1992 and finish in a career-best fifth position in points, in addition to winning two different races during that season at Watkins Glen and Rockingham. It would be the only year in his career in which he would win multiple races in a single season, and that year was 1992. If not for a flat tire in Phoenix and an engine break in the last race, Kyle would have been in a three-way tie for the championship with Elliott and Kulwicki in 1992. Kyle came extremely close to winning the championship. He finished in the same place in the standings as he did in 1993 and also took first place in the Champion Spark Plug 500 that was held at Pocono.

In 1994, he was unable to place higher than fourth overall, and as a result, he was not awarded the Mello Yello sponsorship at the conclusion of the season. This caused his point total to plummet by 10 places. In 1995, he signed a new sponsorship deal with Coors Light, and the following year, in 1995, he won the Miller Genuine Draft 500 at Dover, which was the last Cup race of his career. After only placing in the top 10 five times, he was not able to qualify for the autumn race at Bristol Motor Speedway, which resulted in him falling further down the points standings to 30th place. In spite of missing two races due to injury and failing to qualify for the season-ending race in Atlanta, he finished the next season in 27th position in points. This was his best result since the previous season. At the conclusion of the campaign, he severed his ties with SABCO. In 1996, the well-known rock band Soundgarden released a song that was given the title “Kyle Petty, Son of Richard.”

In 1989, he became a member of the newly formed SABCO Racing squad and began competing on a part-time basis. After starting the season without any sponsorship, he was able to get sponsorship from Peak Antifreeze and Ames Department Stores after driving their vehicle to a top-ten finish in the Daytona 500 while filling in for Eddie Bierschwale. This allowed him and SABCO to begin the season with financial support. Petty and the #42 Pontiac squad participated in nineteen races throughout that season. At Atlanta, Petty’s best performance was a fourth-place position.

In 1990, Peak became the full-time sponsor of the team. That same year, Richard Petty won the GM Goodwrench 500 at North Carolina Speedway with a margin of victory of 26 seconds. Petty finished twelfth in the points standings. Petty was going eleventh in points until he sustained a fractured leg during an accident in the Winston 500 at Talladega, which caused him to miss the following eleven races. Mello Yello would replace Peak as the sponsor of the #42 car in 1991, and Petty was eleventh in points at the time. Because of his shortened schedule and the fact that he had just one finish in the top ten during the second half of the season, he ended up in 31st place in the points standings.
