Barry Manilow Bio

Barry Manilow is a well-known American singer and composer whose career spans seven decades. He was born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1943, in the United States. The songs “Could It Be Magic,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” and “Copacabana” are among his most successful recordings. On the Adult Contemporary Chart, he has recorded and published 51 Top 40 songs, including 13 that reached number one, 28 that were inside the top 10, and 36 that reached the top twenty. The number of platinum and multi-platinum albums that Manilow has recorded is 13. Manilow has been commended by his colleagues in the recording business, including Frank Sinatra, who was cited in the 1970s as stating, “He’s next.” This is despite the fact that music reviewers do not consider him to be one of their favorite artists.

In addition to producing and arranging albums for himself and other artists, Manilow has written and sung songs for musicals, films, and advertisements for businesses such as McDonald’s, Pepsi-Cola, and Band-Aid. Manilow has also produced and arranged records for himself. Between the years 1973 and 2015, he was shortlisted for a Grammy Award a total of fifteen times, winning the award only once for his work as a musician, producer, and arranger. He has also produced records for Bette Midler, Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson, and Sarah Vaughan, all of which have been nominated for Grammys. As a solo artist, Manilow has sold more than 85 million albums all over the globe, making him one of the best-selling performers in the history of the music industry.

He is the son of Edna Manilow and Harold Kelliher, an Irish-American truck driver. His mother was named Edna Manilow. In order to honor his Jewish ancestry, Barry’s father was pressured by Barry’s mother to change his name to Pincus, which was the name of his father’s uncle who lived in the 1800s. When Barry was a little child, his parents went through a divorce, and his mother’s Jewish family would not permit any more contact between Barry and his father after the divorce. Barry’s maternal grandparents were Jews who immigrated to the United States from Russia, and his paternal grandfather was also Jewish. However, Barry’s grandmother was of Irish Catholic origin, thus she was not Jewish. His Irish ancestors originated in Limerick, which is located in Ireland.

Just a few short weeks before Barry’s Bar Mitzvah, his grandpa legally changed their family name to Manilow. In the year 1964, Manilow crossed paths with Bro Herrod, a director working for CBS. Herrod approached Manilow with a request to arrange some songs for a musical version of the play The Drunkard. Instead, Manilow was responsible for the composition of the whole original music. Herrod used Manilow’s work in the Off-Broadway musical, which was performed at the 13th Street Repertory Theatre in New York City for a total of eight years.

After that, Manilow made a living as a pianist, producer, and arranger in the music industry. During the first two years of the 1970s, Manilow recorded performers and accompanied them on the piano for auditions and concerts. He also did this work. As Featherbed, he is responsible for four songs that were released on Bell Records and were produced by Tony Orlando. Three of the songs are ballads: “Morning,” a psychedelic-influenced pop song; “Amy,” a pop song with psychedelic influences; and an early, upbeat version of his own work, “Could It Be Magic.” A fourth song that was recorded was titled “Rosalie Rosie,” and it was intended to be the flip side of “Could It Be Magic.” However, Bell Records decided to use “Morning” as the flip side for Featherbed’s second release rather than “Rosalie Rosie.” The two singles that were released did not make an impression on the charts.

After seeing Manilow perform in 1971, Bette Midler hired the young musician to be her pianist at the Continental Baths in New York City that same year. Subsequently, Bette Midler worked with Manilow as a producer for her first and second record albums, titled The Divine Miss M and Bette Midler, respectively. In addition to that, he served as her musical director for the tour that was organized in support of her first record. Manilow was considered for a Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year in 1973 for his work as a producer on the album titled “The Divine Miss M.” Between the years 1971 and 1975, Manilow was employed by Midler.

After the singles from Featherbed failed to make an impact on the music charts, Bell Records released the album Barry Manilow in July 1973. The album featured an eclectic mix of piano-driven pop and guitar-driven rock music, including a song called “I Am Your Child,” which Manilow had composed with Marty Panzer for the 1972 drama Parades about the Vietnam War.

It was around this period that he started his career as a commercial jingle writer and performer, a career that he maintained throughout the rest of the 1960s. Many of the television jingles that he created were sung by him, such as the ones for State Farm Insurance and Band-Aid, for which he used a childish voice and wrote the music. His singing has been included in advertisements for Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald, Pepsi, and Dr Pepper.

In recognition of his contributions in the 1960s as a singer and jingle composer, Manilow was presented with an Honorary Clio at the 50th Anniversary Clio Awards in Las Vegas in 2009. The ceremony took place in 2009. When he was receiving the prize, he said that the experience of working in the jingle business as a writer for three or four years was the one that taught him the most about crafting pop music.

By 1967, Manilow had been hired on as the musical director for the television series Callback, which had its debut on WCBS-TV on January 27, 1968. After that, he worked as a conductor and arranger for Ed Sullivan’s production firm, where he was responsible for creating a new theme for The Late Show. At the same time, he was composing, producing, and performing his radio and television jingles. While this was going on, he and Jeanne Lucas had a successful run as a pair at Julius Monk’s Upstairs at the Downstairs Club in New York City for a total of two seasons.

Tony Orlando, a recording artist and vice president of Columbia/CBS Music, had already signed Manilow by the time 1969 rolled around. Orlando went on to co-write songs with Manilow and produce those songs together with a group of studio musicians under the moniker “Featherbed” for the recently acquired Bell Records label owned by Columbia Pictures.

Manilow spent his childhood in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, and he received his high school diploma from the Eastern District High School, which has since closed its doors. While he was still in high school, he started a relationship with Susan Deixler, who would eventually become his wife after a divorce. He began his education at New York City College, where he remained a student for a short time before transferring to the New York College of Music. In addition, in order to help pay for his education, he had a job at CBS while he was a student. After that, he attended Juilliard Performing Arts School to further his education in musical theater.
