Kenny G Bio

Kenny G is the stage name of American saxophonist, composer, and producer Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, who was born on June 5, 1956. Gorelick is well recognized for his work in the smooth jazz genre. He achieved commercial success with the album Duotones, which was released in 1986. Kenny G is one of the musicians that has had the most successful career in terms of record sales, with a total of over 75 million albums sold all over the world. Kenny G had his formal education in his hometown of Seattle, where he attended Whitworth Elementary School, Sharples Junior High School, Franklin High School, and the University of Washington.

His initial effort to join the jazz band while he was a freshman in high school was unsuccessful; however, he tried out again the following year and gained the position of first chair. A fellow student from Franklin High School, Robert Damper, who plays the piano and keyboards, is a member of his band. In addition to his academic work when he was in high school, he received one-on-one instruction on the saxophone and clarinet from Johnny Jessen on a weekly basis for a whole academic year.

In addition to that, he played golf for his high school. Since his older brother Brian Gorelick first showed him the sport when he was eleven years old, he has been an avid follower of it ever since. In 1973, while Kenny G was just 17 years old and still enrolled in high school, he landed a position as a sideman for Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. This was the beginning of his career. He continued to play professionally while pursuing a degree in accounting at the University of Washington in Seattle. After completing his studies, he was honored with both the Phi Beta Kappa and the magna cum laude awards. He met the requirements, and all that was left for him to do was to do well on the CPA test.

During the years 1975 and 1976, he was a member of the Seattle funk band Cold, Bold & Together, under the stage name Kenny Gorelick. He played the flute and the saxophone. prior to the year 1980, when he was officially recognized as a member of the Jeff Lorber Fusion. He subsequently said that he had outgrown his affiliation with the band and that was why he decided to leave them. After hearing Kenny G’s cover of “Dancing Queen” by ABBA, Clive Davis, head of Arista Records, convinced Kenny G to sign with the record company as a solo artist in 1982.

He chose to perform under the moniker Kenny G because, as he put it, the term “had a nice ring to it.” His first studio album, titled Kenny G, was recorded in 1981 with members of the Jeff Lorber Fusion, and it was made available for purchase the year after that. The album was met with a favorable reception from the reviewing community and debuted at position No. 10 on the Billboard Jazz Albums list. After the release of his first album in 1982, Kenny G released G Force in January 1983 and Gravity in May 1985. Both of these albums were certified Platinum in the United States for selling one million copies. During this period, he worked along with musician, singer, composer, and producer Kashif on a number of compositions, one of which being the single “Love on the Rise” which was released in 1985.

The year 1986 marked the beginning of the most commercially successful stretch in Kenny G’s career. His fourth solo album, titled Duotones, was released in September 1986. It included an original instrumental composition called “Songbird” which was inspired by his choice to relocate from Seattle to Los Angeles, which signaled the beginning of a new life for him. The record ultimately went on to sell five million copies in the United States alone, which contributed to a rise in his fame all over the globe. In 1987, “Songbird” peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 list, while the first single, “Don’t Make Me Wait for Love,” which featured Lenny Williams on lead vocals, peaked at No. 15 on the Hot 100 chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Both of these accomplishments took place in the same year. Kenny G has contributed to the score of a number of movies, including Dying Young and The Bodyguard, among others. A tune called “Theme for Dying Young” which was composed specifically for the film was considered for a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Both “Waiting for You” and “Even If My Heart Would Break” were performed by Kenny G and can be found on the soundtrack of the film The Bodyguard, which stars Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. Both “The Shadow” and “Miracle on 34th Street” used some of his work in their soundtracks.

Breathless, his sixth studio album, was published in 1992, and it went on to become the best-selling instrumental album ever, with over 15 million copies sold worldwide, selling 12 million copies in the United States alone. Breathless was the best-selling instrumental record ever. The album had a number of successful singles, including “Forever in Love,” which was recognized with a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition and also appeared on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 list. Both “Sentimental” and “By the Time This Night Is Over,” a duet with Peabo Bryson, reached their highest positions on the respective charts: “Sentimental” reached No. 27 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, while “By the Time This Night Is Over” reached No. 25 on the Hot 100.

In the middle to the latter part of the 1980s, Kenny G collaborated with prominent jazz and R&B musicians including George Benson, Patti LaBelle, and Aretha Franklin. The smash track “Love Power,” which was released in 1987 and included G as a guest saxophone, peaked at position No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and position No. 5 on the chart for R&B/Hip-Hop singles. “Love Power” was a duet performed by Dionne Warwick and Jeffrey Osborne.

His debut live album, titled Kenny G Live, had a number of songs that were successful, one of which, “Going Home,” was a huge hit in the People’s Republic of China. Kenny G has worked with a diverse range of musicians, including Andrea Bocelli, Aaron Neville, Toni Braxton, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, and more. Natalie Cole, Steve Miller, Weezer, Dudley Moore, Lee Ritenour, The Rippingtons, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, and Smokey Robinson. His records, which are often categorized as smooth jazz, were heavily influenced by the saxophonist Grover Washington Jr.
