Dermot Joseph Kennedy is a singer and songwriter from Ireland. He was born on the 13th of December 1991. His tracks “Outnumbered” and “Power Over Me” from 2019 as well as “Giants” from 2020 and his appearance on the single “Paradise” by Meduza from 2020 have brought him the most attention. He has recording contracts with Interscope Records in the United States, and Island Records for the rest of the world. Without Fear is the name of his first studio album for a big label, and it was released on October 4, 2019. His second studio album titled Sonder was released in 2022. Rathcoole, which is located in County Dublin, Ireland, was Dermot Joseph Kennedy’s childhood home.
A passionate football supporter and participant, Kennedy began playing the guitar when he was 10 years old, and he began composing songs when he was 14 years old. However, he claims that he did not start taking music seriously until he was 17 years old. Both of his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music, and he gives his father the credit for routinely transporting him into Dublin so that he could participate in open mic evenings when he was still a minor. His mother put together an application for him to attend Maynooth University in County Kildare so that he may major in classical music.
He completed all three years of his academic education. His maternal aunt, Mary Kennedy, is a well-known figure on Irish television and a former journalist. Dermot Kennedy formally started his profession when he was 17 years old by busking; nevertheless, his career did not become sustainable until he was in his mid-twenties after he had been working in the field for more than a decade. He was able to create his sound through busking and performing in a variety of major cities all over the world, including Dublin, which is located in his native nation of Ireland, and Boston, which is located in the United States. Kennedy also received an invitation to perform as the opening act for Glen Hansard, whom he had previously met when he was busking in Dublin and continued to communicate with through text messaging after their first encounter.
In addition to his work as a solo artist, Kennedy has also been a part of the band “Shadows and Dust,” which was formed during his time as a student with three other individuals, one of whom, Micheál Quinn, is now the drummer for Dermot. In spite of the fact that he appreciated the experience, the band disbanded in the year 2015.
In 2018 and 2019, he performed to sold-out crowds throughout the United States, Australia, and Europe on his tour. His first festivals were the Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2017, followed by Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, and Austin City Limits Music Festivals the following year. On both weekends of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2019, he was a performer there. In 2018, fans chose him as NPR Slingshot’s Best New Artist of the Year. He also performed on NPR’s Music Tiny Desk Concert in a live acoustic session that lasted for 14 minutes. At WGBH’s Fraser performance studio, he gave a live performance that lasted for 20 minutes.
He was included on the BBC’s Longlist for the Sound of 2019. Kennedy has made an effort to combine his two primary musical styles, folk and hip hop, in his musical compositions. This is a departure from his earlier pieces, which were played on acoustic instruments more often. In contrast to most songwriters, he does not compose songs with certain times or occurrences in mind when he does so. When he listens to the tune, certain memories and feelings come flooding back to him, and he finds himself automatically writing them down.
According to GQ magazine, Kennedy is a “singer with a rich, reverberating voice, epically emotive songwriting skills”. According to a review that was published in the New York Times on his performance at the 2018 South by Southwest Festival, he has “a grainy, melancholy voice that can crest with a howling rasp. His folk sound is said to be influenced by artists such as Ray LaMontagne, David Gray, Damien Rice, and Glen Hansard, among others. Recent examples of his work have included elements of hip hop, most notably in the work he did in collaboration with Mike Dean on the extended play titled Mike Dean Presents: Dermot Kennedy. Kennedy has also referred to this work as a “mix tape.”
After releasing a number of singles and EPs, Kennedy finally published his first full-length album, titled Without Fear, around the end of 2019. This album is a compilation of several of his previous works; some of them stretch back as far as eight years before the CD was even released. Early in the year 2020, Kennedy collaborated with a number of other musicians to record a version of “Resolution” by Matt Corby for the charity project Songs For Australia. The earnings from the CD will go to support groups that are assisting Australia in recovering from the disaster caused by the bushfires. The album was arranged by Julia Stone.
In the middle of the COVID-19 epidemic, Kennedy took part in the Live At-Home event that was hosted by Billboard. Through the organization of a brief online performance, he assisted them in raising funds for the charitable organization Housing Works. After that, Kennedy planned his very own online concert, which was called Sound Waves, and it took place in May 2020 to raise money for the WHO Solidarity Response Fund.
Kennedy participated in the Soccer Aid charity match for the first time on September 6, 2020, among a number of other famous people who were also helping to raise money for UNICEF UK. As a member of the World XI squad, he contributed to their victory against England by scoring one of their three goals and helping them earn their second consecutive victory. The game went to a penalty shootout, which the team ultimately prevailed in, changing the score from 3-3 to 4-3 in their favor. After that, he was given the title of Man of the Match.
At the BRIT Awards, which took place in January 2020, Kennedy received a nomination for international male solo artist of the Year. In 2021, Kennedy made a cover version of the song “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica for the compilation album The Metallica Blacklist, which was a charitable homage to the band. On March 3, 2022, Kennedy’s song “Better Days” was announced as the winner of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Song of the Year 2021 competition.
On November 18, 2022, he made the album Sonder available. In his own words, the album is “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.” one of the songs on the album is really slow. In an interview that he gave to the Canadian television music channel Much on the 20th of June, 2023, Kennedy issued an apology for using a phrase that is considered offensive to the Irish Traveller population.
