Tom Jones Bio

A Welsh vocalist with the stage name Sir Thomas Jones Woodward OBE, was born on June 7th, 1940. His career got off to a strong start in the 1960s with a run of top 10 singles, and he has been on the road ever since, making performances in Las Vegas all the way up until 2011. His singing has been referred to as having a “full-throated, robust baritone” by the website AllMusic.

Pop, R&B, show songs, country, dance, soul, and gospel are just a few of the genres that Jones has covered in his performances. The New York Times referred to him as a “musical shapeshifter” in 2008. They said that he “could slide from soulful rasp to pop croon, with a voice that was as husky as it was pretty.” Over 100 million recordings have been sold, and he has had 36 Top 40 successes in the UK and 19 in the US. Some of his most successful songs include “It’s Not Unusual,” “What’s New Pussycat?,” the theme song for the James Bond film Thunderball, “Green, Green Grass of Home,” “Delilah,” “She’s a Lady,” “Sex Bomb,” and a rendition of Prince’s “Kiss.”

His maternal grandpa was Welsh, and his maternal grandmother was born in Wales to English parents who were originally from Somerset and Wiltshire. His paternal grandfather was English and was from Gloucestershire, while his paternal grandmother was English and was from Wiltshire. He had his early education at Wood Road Infants School, his middle education at Wood Road Junior School, and his secondary education at Pontypridd Central Secondary Modern School.

He started singing when he was very young, and by the time he was in elementary school, he was already a frequent performer at family gatherings, weddings, and in the chorus at his school. He did not like going to school or doing sports, but his gift as a singer helped him build his confidence. When he was 12 years old, he received the news that he had TB. After a great deal of time had passed, he said, “I rested in bed for two years.” It was the most difficult period of my whole life. During this period, he was unable to focus on anything other than drawing and listening to music.

Jones has also tried his hand at acting on occasion. He made his acting debut in the leading part in the television picture Pleasure Cove, which was his first role. In the film Mars Attacks directed by Tim Burton, he also had a cameo appearance as himself. As a result of his work as the presenter of the television series, This Is Tom Jones in 1970, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy. His debut in serious acting came the next year, in 2012, when he appeared in an episode of Playhouse Presents.

In 1966, he was honored with a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In 1989, he was given an MTV Video Music Award, and in 2000 and 2003, he was presented with two Brit Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Music and Best British Male. In recognition of his contributions to the music industry, he was awarded an OBE in 1998 and a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006. His participation as a coach on the singing competition The Voice UK is largely responsible for the spike in popularity that he had in the 2010s. A “full-throated, robust baritone” is how some have characterized Jones’s singing voice.

According to Jones himself, when he was younger, his voice was more of a tenor. He said that whatever you lost on the higher end, you would gain on the lower end. When I was younger, I used to be able to achieve a top C, but now I can only reach a B flat. In 1963, he joined the Tommy Scott and the Senators, a Welsh beat group, and assumed the role of frontman. They quickly established a following and a reputation in South Wales among the locals. 1964 saw the band collaborating with producer Joe Meek to create a number of solo recordings. Meek then submitted these songs to a number of record companies, but they were not very successful. Later on in the same year, a producer for Decca named Peter Sullivan spotted Tommy Scott and the Senators playing in a bar and connected them with a management named Phil Solomon. However, the collaboration did not last for very long.

The band continues to perform at venues located around South Wales. Jones was brought to London by Gordon Mills, who later became Jones’ manager and was also active in the music industry there. Mills rechristened him “Tom Jones” in order to capitalize on the success of the 1963 movie of the same name, which won an Academy Award. In the end, Mills was successful in obtaining a recording deal for Jones with Decca. In the latter half of 1964, he had his debut single, titled “Chills and Fever,” published. Although it did not chart, the follow-up single “It’s Not Unusual” went on to become a huge success all over the world thanks to promotion from the offshore pirate radio station Radio Caroline. The year that followed was Jones’s most successful of his career, and it helped to establish him as one of the most well-known singers of the British Invasion.

At the beginning of 1965, “It’s Not Unusual” climbed to the top spot on the singles chart in both the United Kingdom and the United States. During the year 1965, Mills was successful in securing a number of film themes for Jones to record. These themes included the music from the James Bond film Thunderball as well as the tune from What’s New Pussycat?, which was composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. When he was contacted about the later song for the first time, Jones reacted with skepticism. When it was provided to him, he said that he had the impression that it was “sort of a backhanded compliment: ‘I’ve got to have you, but this is the song.'” Jones said that Bacharach had to convince her to sing “What’s New Pussycat.

“When I initially heard it, the thought that went through my head was, ‘Christ! What is the name of all that is holy are they expecting me to sing for?’ Burt Bacharach, however, said that he wanted a “big voice” to perform “this bloody crazy song.” And you put it on, it’s an oldie but a goodie.” In 1966, the Grammy Awards presented Jones with the trophy for “Best New Artist.” Jones first met Elvis Presley during a break in production at Paramount Studios in Hollywood; he remembers Presley singing ‘With These Hands’ as he went towards him off the film set.  Jones and Elvis Presley became fast friends. The two guys got along quite well with one another.
