Barry Williams Bio

Barry William Blenkhorn, best known by his stage name Barry Williams, is an American actor. He was born on September 30, 1954, although he is more well-known by his birth name. He is most recognized for his performance as Greg Brady, the oldest of the Brady boys, on the American Broadcasting Company television series The Brady Bunch, a character that he also played in multiple sequels and spin-offs of the original show. His mother was Doris May Moore, and his father was Frank Millar Blenkhorn, who was born in Canada.

Barry Blenkhorn, together with his brothers Craig and Scott, raised his family in Pacific Palisades, California, where actor Peter Graves lived nearby during Barry’s childhood. Williams made the decision when he was a boy that he wanted to be an actor, and he made his debut on television in an episode of Dragnet 1967 titled “Christmas” the following year. Williams continued to appear in guest appearances on television after the end of The Brady Bunch in 1974. He also got interested in musical theater, traveling with plays like Grease, The Sound of Music, Pippin, and West Side Story.

In 1988, Williams made his debut on Broadway in the musical Romance/Romance with Alison Fraser, who was nominated for a Tony Award. Williams took up the main male role of “Alfred/Sam” after Scott Bakula quit the production. Later on in his career, Williams was able to leverage the fact that people had always thought of him as Greg Brady. In the midst of a string of TV and film performances that focused on his well-known performance as a teenager, he eventually landed a part that was quite different from his portrayal as Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch. In 1984, he was cast in the role of Hannibal, an English con artist who plotted with Holly Sutton Scorpio on General Hospital, which was one of the most popular television shows at the time.

Williams has made appearances in a number of reunion episodes of The Brady Bunch on television, including the holiday film A Very Brady Christmas from 1988. In recognition of his work as Greg Brady, the Young Artist Foundation bestowed Williams in 1989 its Former Child Star “Lifetime Achievement” Award. This award was given out by the foundation. His autobiography, Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg, was published in 1992 and became a New York Times bestseller. In 2000, it was turned into a television movie with the same name and starred Adam Brody as Williams.

In the year 2000, Williams performed a parody song called “The Real Greg Brady,” which was a takeoff on Eminem’s song “The Real Slim Shady.” Williams, a comedy writer and radio producer, David Brody of Z100 NY WHTZ, and Jay Gilbert of WEBN Radio in Cincinnati were all contributors to the song’s writing. Williams had a cameo appearance as a member of the audience in the music video for “The Barry Williams Show” by Peter Gabriel, which was released in 2002. Gabriel subsequently said that at the time he composed the song, he was unaware of the existence of the actor who played Jerry Springer in The Brady Bunch. The song is really about a fictitious talk show presenter who is similar to Jerry Springer.

Williams has been a paid featured dancer at the World’s Largest Disco, which is located in Buffalo, New York. She has made many visits there. During the 2001–2002 television season, he portrayed the role of Manager Dean “The Machine” Strickland in a total of thirteen episodes of the comedy Hollywood 7, which starred the British musical group S Club 7. Since the year 2019, he has made Branson, Missouri his permanent residence and performs on the road with the musical ensemble Barry Williams and the Travelers. In addition, he appeared in the 2019 television series A Very Brady Renovation on HGTV with the other children from the Brady Bunch. Williams’s co-stars from The Brady Bunch, Christopher Knight, Mike Lookinland, Susan Olsen, and Robbie Rist, all appeared with him in the 2021 Christmas movie Blending Christmas which was produced by Lifetime.

Actors Equity Association, the union that represents stage actors, handed Williams a fine of $52,000 in January 2001 for appearing as Captain Von Trapp in a non-union tour of The Sound of Music. Actors Equity Association is the organization that represents stage actors. The project was reportedly protested in a number of places, as reported by Variety. Williams’s response was to file a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, saying that the punishment was invalid since he had resigned from the union in September 2000, before the beginning of the tour. Williams’s argument was based on the fact that the fine was imposed after he had left the union.

It was stated by Equity that Williams, who joined the union in 1974, was still a member when he started contract discussions for the post. Williams joined Equity in 1974. After Williams successfully unionized a non-Equity production of A Christmas Carol in late 2004, Actor’s Equity decided to readmit him as a member in good standing in 2005. Williams has been a member of Actor’s Equity ever since.

Williams, Knight, and Lookinland performed as “Mummies” in the eighth season of The Masked Singer in 2022. They were ousted on “TV Theme Night” with “Fortune Teller” Daymond John. At the “Barry Williams Disco Night” in 2003, Williams signed autographs for attendees. Williams portrayed himself in the film Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, which was released in 2003. Williams gained the greatest notoriety for his performance as Greg Brady, the eldest son, on the comedy The Brady Bunch in the 1970s. Williams proceeded to be hired in guest appearances on various television shows such as Adam-12, The Invaders, That Girl, Mission: Impossible, The Mod Squad, Here Come the Brides, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., and Bartleby, the Scrivener until he was cast in the role of Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch in 1969.
