Bio

Jimmy Eat World emerged as a pioneering name in the mid-1990s emo movement. Eventually, the band acquired a bigger audience by adopting a combination of alternative rock and power pop that addressed the heart in addition to the intellect. The band’s influence grew substantially with the release of 1999’s Clarity, an album that has since become regarded as a cornerstone of the emo genre; however, it was the band’s subsequent release, 2001’s Bleed American, and the catchy single “The Middle” that broke them into the commercial rock mainstream.

Even though subsequent Top Ten albums Futures (2004) and Chase This Light (2007) did little to evoke the hard-edged sensitivity of Clarity, the emo label proved difficult to shake throughout the 2000s for Jimmy Eat World, but the band still remained a league above the generation of genre torchbearers they helped spawn. The band, having achieved comfortable veteran status in the 2010s, proceeded to publish steady Top 20 efforts throughout the decade, capping up the decade with their tenth album, Survival, which was released in 2019.

Mesa, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix, was where Jimmy Eat World got its start in the music business back in 1993. Jim Adkins (vocals and guitar) and Zach Lind (drums) first crossed paths when they were students at Mountain View High School. Years of performing together in local bands had previously brought them together with fellow Mountain View natives Tom Linton (guitar/vocals) and Mitch Porter (bass). After forming a band together.

The four musicians took their cue from an argument that took place between Linton’s younger brothers, Ed and Jimmy, on what the band should be called. Fights broke out between the two brothers on a regular basis, with Jimmy, the larger of the two, often emerging victorious. One day, when he was feeling particularly vindictive, Ed resorted to painting an image of his burly bigger brother stuffing everything in the universe into his mouth. Underneath the image was printed the slogan “Jimmy Eat World,” and the band thought it was an excellent choice.

Jimmy Eat World fashioned itself into a punk rock group and started performing tiny performances around the Phoenix valley. They cite influences such as Rocket from the Crypt, early Def Leppard, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Fugazi, and the Velvet Underground as some of their primary musical inspirations.

Wooden Blue Records was an imprint that was established in the neighboring town of Tempe. During the course of 1994 and into the early part of 1995, Jimmy Eat World released a number of extended plays and singles on that label. Later on, the band’s self-titled debut album, as well as limited edition pressings of “One, Two, Three, Four” and “Back from the Dead Mother Fucker,” and split EPs with Christie Front Drive, Emery, and Blueprint, would all go out of print.

Jimmy Eat World was signed to a recording contract by Capitol Records in the middle of 1995, when both bandleaders, Adkins and Linton, were just 19 years old. This was in response to the consistently expanding size of their fan base. Soon after, Porter left the band, and Linton’s closest friend since eighth school, bassist Rick Burch, was brought on board to serve as a substitute. Soon after, the band made their debut on a big label with the release of 1996’s Static Prevails.

After a period of three years, in 1999, Jimmy Eat World released their complex second album titled Clarity. At this time, the band had fully transitioned into an emo outfit and was known as Jimmy Eat World. With this album, Adkins took over the positions as the group’s main vocalist and primary composer for the first time. Before, Linton had been responsible for both of these responsibilities.

Sadly, Capitol Records had also been going through a period of major upheaval, which resulted in the resignation of president Gary Gersh – the same person who had signed Jimmy Eat World in 1995. Capitol’s new management balked at the sensitive sound of Clarity and started to shelve the album; it wasn’t until several key radio stations (including L.A.’s influential KROQ) started airing the song that Capitol reconsidered its decision to shelve the album “It was only after the success of “Lucky Denver Mint” that the record label gave in and released “Clarity” in February of 1999.

Lucky Denver Mint “was a hit both on the airwaves and on the big screen, where it was used in the Drew Barrymore comedy Never Been Kissed as a result of its popularity. The number of Jimmy Eat World’s followers continued to increase, despite the fact that the band’s relationship with Capitol gradually deteriorated. Jimmy Eat World made the decision to quit Capitol Records when the company opted not to release the band’s third studio album, and Capitol was delighted to let them go.

Around this time, Jimmy Eat World’s music was becoming popular in other countries, and their album Clarity was particularly well received in nations such as Germany. The band’s response consisted of funding and publicizing a tour that would take them throughout the continent of Europe. In the same year, the indie label Big Wheel Recreation produced a compilation album called Singles. It included previously unheard B-sides and rare tracks.

Also, a split EP with the Australian rock band Jebediah was made available, and the band pooled the money they made from those endeavors together in order to fund the recording of their album Bleed American (whose title would later be changed to Jimmy Eat World after the events of September 11, 2001). The band independently constructed the album that would successfully start their high-profile careers by enlisting the services of Clarity’s producer, Mark Trombino.

The finished piece was subsequently used by Jimmy Eat World in order to secure a deal with Dreamworks, who ultimately released the album in July of 2001. It was the record’s second single, “The Middle,” that put Jimmy Eat World on the pop/rock map. While the hard-hitting title tune fared quite well, it was “The Middle” that put them there. In addition to receiving significant airplay on MTV, where a younger audience quickly took a liking to the band’s carefree vibe, the music video for the song included a large number of young people who were only partially clothed.

Jimmy Eat World maintained a consistent presence on the Billboard charts and on current rock radio one year after the album’s first release. The third single, titled “Sweetness,” was issued in the summer of 2002, and “A Praise Chorus” was issued not long thereafter. These releases enabled the album to achieve platinum certification.
