Jidenna Bio

Jidenna Theodore Robinson, better known simply as Jidenna, is a Nigerian-American singer and rapper. He was born on May 4, 1985, in the United States. In 2015, Jidenna released two songs: “Classic Man and “Yoga”. These singles were released to promote the compilation EP, The Eephus, which was published by Monáe’s label Wondaland Records in partnership with Epic Records. The Chief, his first album, was released on February 17, 2017, and it reached its highest position on the Billboard 200 chart at number 38.

Jidenna Theodore Mobisson was born on May 4, 1985, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, and is a native of the United States.  to Tama Mobisson, who works in accounting, and Oliver Mobisson, who is a professor working in Nigerian Igbo. Mobisson spent part of his childhood in Nigeria, where his father had a teaching position at Enugu State University. Mobisson’s father specialized in computer science. When Mobisson was six years old, his family made the difficult decision to go back to the United States after an unsuccessful attempt to abduct Mobisson. The family relocated to Norwood, Massachusetts in 1995, and subsequently to Milton, Massachusetts in the year 2000. His father passed away in the year 2010.

While he was still in high school, he started his career in the music industry by producing, arranging, and composing songs for the rap group Black Spadez. In their senior year at Milton Academy, where Mobisson was a student and graduated in 2003, Mobisson and Black Spadez collaborated on the publication of their first album. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity from Stanford University in 2008, he began pursuing a career in music while also working full-time as a teacher. During this time, he moved between Los Angeles, Oakland, Brooklyn, and Atlanta before signing a deal with recording artist Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Records.

Jidenna is now distributed by Epic Records and has a record deal with Wondaland Records, which is owned by Janelle Monáe. He has worked together with a lot of musicians who are now signed to this label, such as Roman GianArthur, St. Beauty, Deep Cotton, and even Janelle Monáe herself. After that, he started recording a five-song collection of the label’s debut extended play, which was given the name The Eephus.

The song “Classic Man” was Jidenna’s first official single, and it was released in February 2015. GianArthur was featured on the track. The song was played often throughout the whole of the United States, and it made its debut on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart at position number 49. Jidenna has claimed that KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane are two of his primary musical influences, in addition to the type of music known as Nigerian Highlife.

The singer honed his distinctive look during his time at the university when he was instructed by his psychology professor, Philip Zimbardo, on the influence that can be exerted by one’s choice of attire. However, he did not start dressing in his trademark dapper manner until after the passing of his father in the year 2010. Jidenna says that his style is “heavily inspired by the Harlem Renaissance with hints of traditional West African design,” and that it is a “marriage of European and African aesthetics.” Currently, Jidenna calls the neighborhood of East Flatbush in Brooklyn home.

Jidenna appeared as a guest star in an episode of the original Netflix series Luke Cage that aired in September of 2016. Jidenna does a performance of “Long Live the Chief” at the beginning of the episode “Just to Get a Rep” from the first season. This takes place at the mythical Harlem’s Paradise. In October of 2016, he appeared on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, where he sang “Long Live the Chief” and “Little Bit More” with a full band.

Jidenna appeared as a guest star in the episodes of Insecure titled “Thirsty as Fuck” and “Shady as Fuck,” both of which were broadcast in November of 2016. The worldwide lockdown that occurred during the coronavirus pandemic allowed the Nigerian-American star some much-needed time and space to figure out precisely what he wanted to achieve with his third album, which musically leans into the psychedelic soul and funk that he listens to back home. The album was created during the outbreak of the coronavirus.

In a roundabout way, the pandemic also influenced his songwriting, although not in the conventional sense. During what he refers to as his “hoe phase,” Jidenna sought connection by flying women into L.A. to spend time with him. This, in turn, lighted the creative flame and spawned the early thoughts for the album’s concept. Instead of writing about the virus and how it impacted the globe, Jidenna took a different approach. He sought connection by flying women into L.A. to spend time with him. “Like most individuals who are alone, they’re hoping to be with someone; thus, my aim was to fly out ladies over the course of a particular span and keep my music motivated, you know? Jidenna clarified that this was going to be the extent of her actions.

Moonlight, the 2016 film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture, contained a remix of “Classic Man” that was chopped and screwed. Janelle Monáe and Jidenna’s collaboration titled “Yoga” was the second song taken from the EP and was released on March 31, 2015. At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, his song “Classic Man” was up for consideration for the award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. At the BET Awards in June of the same year, Jidenna and Monáe gave a performance of the song together. At the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards, which took place in November, Jidenna was also recognized as the year’s best new artist.

Fear & Fancy is a social club that was established in California in 2006, and Jidenna was one of the first members. The society, which is reminiscent of the social assistance and pleasure clubs of New Orleans, is an international collective of businesspeople, activists, educators, scientists, and artists who hold soirees, dinner parties, and protests. In addition, the society is reminiscent of the social aid and pleasure clubs of New Orleans.

The song “Chief Don’t Run” was released as a single by him in June 2016. Jidenna released his first studio album, titled The Chief, on February 17, 2017, under his own name. The cover artwork of this record bears tribute to Boz Scaggs’ album Middle Man. The lead songs “Sufi Woman” and “Tribe” were both published on the same day, July 26, 2019 and will be included on his upcoming second studio album, 85 to Africa. 2019 saw the release of Jidenna’s second studio album, the title.
