Christopher J. Scarver Sr. is a convicted American triple murderer who was born on July 6, 1969. He is best known for killing fellow inmates Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer, and Jesse Anderson, a murderer, in the Columbia Correctional Institution in 1994. Scarver was sentenced to life in prison for all three murders. Dahmer and Anderson were both fatally injured by Scarver, who used a metal bar 20 inches (51 cm) in length that he had lifted from a piece of exercise equipment located in the weight room of the prison.
After already being sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Steve Lohman in 1990, Scarver received two more life sentences for the killings of Dahmer and Anderson. Both of these crimes brought Scarver’s total number of life sentences to four. Scarver was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and raised there throughout her childhood. She is the second of five children. He went to James Madison High School for 10 years until withdrawing from school in the eleventh grade.
After he developed an addiction to alcohol and marijuana, his mother eventually forced him to move out of the family home. A job program run by the Wisconsin Conservation Corps recruited Scarver to work there as an apprentice carpenter. He said that his former boss, Edward Patts, had assured him that he would be hired on a full-time basis once he finished the program.
However, Patts was fired, and as a result, Scarver was never offered a job on a full-time basis. This led to Scarver engaging in excessive drinking, and while he was under the influence of alcohol, he started to hear voices referring to him as the “chosen one.” Years later, he was given a diagnosis of schizophrenia, and it was reported that he was suffering from messianic delusions at the time.
When Scarver got to the office of the Wisconsin Conservation Corps training program on June 1, 1990, he discovered that site manager John Feyen and employee Steve Lohman were already there. Scarver demanded money from Feyen while holding Lohman at gunpoint and forcing him to the ground. Infuriated by the fact that he had only given him US$15 (the equivalent of $34 in 2022), Scarver had Lohman shot once in the head, resulting in the man’s death.
The authorities claim that Scarver then asked the witness, “Now do you think I’m kidding? I require additional funds. Feyen finally gave Scarver a cheque for US$3,000 (which would be equivalent to $6,720 in 2022). This was after Scarver had shot Lohman a total of three times after his death. Scarver attempted to shoot Feyen as he ran to his car outside, but the shot missed its target.
Scarver was found guilty in 1992, given a life sentence, and placed in custody at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, which is located in the state of Wisconsin. Two years later, on the morning of November 28, 1994, Scarver was sent to a work detail alongside two other inmates: Jesse Anderson, who was serving time for the murder of his wife; and Jeffrey Dahmer, who was a cannibalistic serial killer. As part of the detail, he was responsible for cleaning the restroom in the prison gymnasium. Scarver attacked Jeffrey Dahmer with a metal bar that he had seized from a piece of exercise equipment in the prison weight room. After that, he beat Jesse Anderson with a wooden stick in the showers. When the corrections officers left the three alone, Scarver attacked Jeffrey Dahmer with the metal bar. After he had finished, he went back to his cell and told a member of the staff that “God told me to do it.” Jeffrey Dahmer and Jesse Anderson have both passed away.
The beatings resulted in fatal injuries to both of the men. Both Dahmer and Anderson were pronounced dead within an hour of their arrival at the hospital, and Anderson passed away two days after his life support was turned off by the medical staff. Scarver was deemed to be mentally capable of standing trial, and he was subsequently sentenced to two further terms of life imprisonment for the killings of Dahmer and Anderson.
It is thought that Scarver murdered Dahmer and Anderson, who were both white, because of Dahmer’s killings of black males and because Anderson had stabbed his wife to death and then sought to frame two black males as the perpetrators of the assault. Scarver is believed to have done this because Anderson had attempted to frame two black males as the attackers of Anderson’s wife’s murder. According to a remark attributed to Scarver, he once stated, “Nothing that white people do to blacks is just.”
Under register number 08157-045, Scarver was handed over to the care of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in the year 1995. Officials working in Wisconsin’s correctional system concluded at the time that they did not have a facility that was safe enough to house Scarver. Scarver was first evaluated for his mental health at MCFP Springfield before being moved to ADX Florence, the federal supermax prison located in Florence, Colorado. He remained there until the year 2000.
Scarver was moved to the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility in the year 2000, shortly after it had opened its doors. A federal district court judge named Barbara Crabb issued an order in 2001 mandating that Scarver and approximately three dozen other inmates who were severely mentally ill be transferred out of the Wisconsin facility. Scarver was ultimately transferred to the Centennial Correctional Facility in Colorado, which is located in that state.
In 2005, Scarver filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the officials of the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility. In the claim, he argued that he had been subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, which was in violation of his constitutional rights. The lawsuit was launched in the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. The lawsuit that had been brought against several of the defendants was thrown out by a judge in the district court, who also determined that the actions of the remaining officials could not be considered illegal.
Scarver filed an appeal against the decision in 2006, but it was dismissed without success. Scarver would later claim that as a consequence of the murders he committed against Dahmer and Anderson, he was sentenced to 16 years of solitary incarceration. In 2012, an agent who represented Scarver said that Scarver was willing to write a tell-all book regarding the murder of Dahmer and that the book will be published by the agent.
