Bio

Whoopi Goldberg, whose real name is Caryn Elaine Johnson and who was born on November 13, 1955, is an American actor, comedian, author, and television personality. She is one of 17 artists who have won the EGOT, which consists of an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Academy Award, and a Tony Award. She has won multiple awards. She was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2001. On November 13, 1955, Caryn Elaine Johnson was born in Manhattan, New York City.

The daughter of Robert James Johnson Jr, a Baptist clergyman, and Emma Johnson, a nurse and educator. She was reared in the Chelsea-Elliot Houses in New York City, a public housing development. At the HB Studio in New York City, Goldberg studied acting under Uta Hagen. She made her screen debut in the avant-garde ensemble film Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away, directed by San Francisco native William Farley.

She “first came to national prominence with her one-woman show”in which she portrayed Moms Mabley, Moms, in the years 1983 and 1984. The show was first presented in Berkeley, California, and then at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco; its advertisement is still on display at the Oakland Museum of California. In 1983, she devised The Spook Show, a one-woman performance comprised of many character monologues. She was “discovered” by director Mike Nichols after seeing her perform.

He recalled in an interview that when he and Goldberg first met backstage, they “fell into each other’s arms” and that he “broke into tears.”  Nichols served as Goldberg’s mentor.  Nichols assisted her in moving the production to Broadway, where it ran from October 24, 1984, to March 10, 1985, under the new title Whoopi Goldberg. During this run, it was recorded, and in 1985, HBO aired it as Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway. Steven Spielberg noticed Goldberg’s Broadway performance while she was appearing in The Comedy Store’s Belly Room.

She played the lead in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple. It was a commercial and critical success when it was released in late 1985. Critic Roger Ebert hailed Goldberg’s performance as “one of the most extraordinary debut performances in movie history.” It received 11 Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Actress for Goldberg. According to Goldberg, her mother was a “stern, tough, and smart woman” who raised her and her brother Clyde alone. She attended St. Columba’s, a nearby Catholic school. Her recent ancestors moved up north from Virginia, Palatka, Florida, and Faceville, Georgia. She left Washington Irving High School.

She’s mentioned that her stage name is “When you’re performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the restroom and close the door,” the character “Whoopi” said from a whoopee cushion. So, you’ll need to let it out if you feel a little gassy. I used to get the comment, “You’re like a whoopee cushion,” from folks. And that is how the name was derived.”

Regarding her stage name, she asserted in 2011 “My mother did not give me the name Whoopi, but Goldberg is what I was given; it is a part of my family and ancestry, just like being black, and I know I am Jewish. I don’t exercise. Although I don’t attend a temple, I do recall the holidays.” She claimed that “”Come on, are you Jewish?” would be a common question. And I always respond, “Would you question me if I were white? No, I’ll bet.”  According to one tale, her mother, Emma Johnson, believed her daughter couldn’t succeed in show business since the family’s original surname was “not Jewish enough.”  According to research by Henry Louis Gates Jr, the author Goldberg has no known German or Jewish origin, and none of her forebears bear the name Goldberg.

Her heritage can be partially linked to the Papel and Bayote people of contemporary Guinea-Bissau in West Africa, according to DNA test results that were shown in the 2006 PBS documentary African American Lives.  The programme mentioned her great-great-grandparents William and Elsie Washington, who had purchased property in northern Florida in 1873, and mentioned how they were one of the very few black individuals to homestead during the years after the Civil War. The programme also indicates that her grandfather was a Pullman porter and that her grandparents resided in Harlem.

In incident recounted by Nichelle Nichols in Trekkies, a little Goldberg was watching Star Trek when she exclaimed, “Uhura!” “Momma! A black woman is on television, but she is not a maid!”  This led to Goldberg’s enduring love of Star Trek. On Star Trek: The Next Generation, Guinan is a recurrent guest star role that Goldberg pushed for and was ultimately given. In the 1970s, Goldberg relocated to Berkeley, California, where she worked odd jobs as a bricklayer, bank teller, and mortuary cosmetologist. She also worked as a server in San Diego, California.

Courtney Love was one of her acting pupils when she joined the avant-garde theatrical group the Blake Street Hawkeyes and started teaching comedy and acting.  In addition, Goldberg participated in a number of plays. She saw a midair collision of two planes in San Diego in 1978, which led to the onset of post-traumatic stress disorder and her developing a dread of flying.

With her one-woman play Spook Show, Goldberg launched her stage career in 1983. Whoopi Goldberg, the show’s Broadway adaptation, lasted from 1984 to 1985. For recording the show, she took home a Grammy for Best Comedy Album. Her breakthrough performance as Celie, a mistreated woman in the Deep South, in Steven Spielberg’s historical drama The Color Purple marked her entry into the big screen, and she went on to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for the part.
