Bio

David Khari Webber Chappelle is an American actor and stand-up comedian. His satirical comedic sketch series Chappelle’s Show, in which he starred until he left in the midst of the third season of production, is his most well-known work. Following a break, Chappelle resumed touring the country doing stand-up comedy. By 2006, Chappelle had been dubbed the “comic genius of America” by Esquire[3], and in 2013, a Billboard writer referred to him as “the finest.”  He was voted No. 9 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “50 Best Stand Up Comics of All Time” in 2017. On August 24, 1973, David Khari Webber Chappelle was born in Washington, D.C.

William David Chappelle III, his father, was the dean of students and a vocal performance professor at Yellow Springs, Ohio’s Antioch College.  His mother, Yvonne Seon, served as the prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba, is a Unitarian Universalist minister, and has held academic positions at numerous universities, including Wright State University and Prince George’s Community College. Besides a stepbrother, Chappelle also has a stepmother. On September 13, 1990, ABC aired the premiere of America’s Funniest People, which included a montage of Chappelle cracking a joke. To pursue a career as a comedian, Chappelle relocated to New York City. He played in front of the “Amateur Night” crowd at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, but he was booed off stage. Chappelle cited the event as the turning point in his bravery to pursue his ambitions in show business.

He immediately established himself on the New York comedy scene, even doing performances in the parks. He refined his technique through Monday night “open mic” performances at venues like the Boston Comedy Club on West 3rd Street, as late as the summer of 1994, in addition to weekend stand-up jobs.  He received praise from both critics and the general public in 1992 for his performance on Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam on HBO. His presence on this programme was the catalyst for his fame to start growing, which led to his being invited back time and time again as a guest on late-night programmes including Politically Incorrect, Late Show with David Letterman, The Howard Stern Show, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. “The Kid” is how Whoopi Goldberg referred to him.  He made his acting debut as “Ahchoo” in Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men in Tights when he was 19 years old.

Additionally, he had three appearances on Star Search, where rival comic Lester Barrie beat him out; Chappelle subsequently made fun of Barrie’s lack of success in a joke. Chappelle received an offer the same year to play Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue in Forrest Gump. He declined the role because of concern that the role was humiliating and the movie would fail. In the 1997 short Bowl of Pork, he mocked the movie, in which a stupid black guy is to blame for the Rodney King beating, the LA riots, and O. J. Simpson’s being charged with murder.  In 1994, Chappelle appeared in Getting In, a first feature from Doug Liman.  He served as Aretha Franklin’s opening act when she was 19.

Chappelle created a number of pilots that caught the eye of television network executives, but none of them were chosen to be developed into a series. He had a cameo in an episode of the hit ABC comedy Home Improvement in 1995. According to the plot, comedian Jim Breuer and Chappelle asked Tim Taylor for help on their women.  Because of how well received their one appearance in the episode was, ABC decided to give the characters their own spin-off comedy, Buddies. However, Breuer was sacked during the pilot episode recording and replaced by actor Christopher Gartin. Buddies had a low-rated March 1996 debut, and only five of its 13 planned episodes had been created before it was cancelled.

Chappelle featured in another pilot after Buddies’ flop. Chappelle claims that the network was uneasy with the African-American ensemble and wanted more white actors to be recruited.  Chappelle fought back and later charged the network of racism. Chappelle’s father passed away shortly after, and after returning to Ohio, he thought about quitting the entertainment industry. In the 1996 film The Nutty Professor starring Eddie Murphy, one of his primary comedic inspirations, he appeared as a stand-up insult comedian who attacks nightclub guests.

He had a tiny part in the 1997 film Con Air. He performed stand-up for HBO Comedy Half-Hour in the start of 1998. He made an appearance in “Pilots and Pens Lost,” a sixth-season episode of The Larry Sanders Show, the same year. In this episode, he and the executives of the show’s unnamed television network poke fun at the treatment of scriptwriters and show creators and the executives’ inclinations to automatically fall back on racial stereotypes. Chappelle attended Woodlin Elementary School when he was a child growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland.

His parents were politically engaged, and Johnny Hartman and Pete Seeger were among the guests in the family’s home. Around this time, Chappelle’s comedy inspiration came from Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor, who both agreed with Hartman’s prediction that Chappelle would become a comedian. Chappelle lived in Washington with his mother after his parents’ divorce and saw his father in Ohio during the summers. He worked as an usher at Ford’s Theatre while still in high school. He briefly attended Eastern High School in Washington, DC, before moving on to the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he majored in theatrical arts and received his diploma in 1991.

Numerous honours have been bestowed upon him, including the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, three Grammy Awards, and six Emmy Awards. In recognition of his performance on Saturday Night Live as a guest, Chappelle won his first Emmy in 2017. He won a Grammy in 2018 for his comedy album The Age of Spin & Deep in the Heart of Texas, which was produced by Netflix. Another Chappelle-starring Netflix special, Equanimity, was nominated for three Emmys in 2018 and won the Outstanding Variety Special  prize. Chappelle was chosen to win the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019 by the Kennedy Center and considered the nation’s top comedy award. Sticks & Stones won Chappelle his third straight Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 2020.
