Troy Matthew Deeney, an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for Birmingham City in the EFL Championship, was born on June 29, 1988. Deeney, one of his parents’ three children, was born in Birmingham, West Midlands, and raised in Chelmsley Wood. Deeney and his mother were attacked by his father when he was 10 years old, which resulted in visits from social services. When Deeney was 11 years old, his parents divorced, and his mother was given custody of their children. He kept up a relationship with his father, a drug dealer in the neighborhood where Deeney lived. Deeney was dismissed from school at the age of 14, went back at the age of 15, and then departed at the age of 16 without receiving any GCSEs. He has obtained GCSEs in math, science, and English since 2012. At the age of 15, Deeney received an invitation from the Aston Villa academy to participate in a four-day summer trial with the goal of winning a youth contract. However, Deeney missed the first three days because he “knew there was a game on the last day,” and Villa did not extend him a contract. He joined Chelmsley Town in 2004 and had started training as a bricklayer, earning £120 a week.
He made his debut on October 9, 2004, in a 2-1 victory over Mile Oak Rovers. He was only able to make the team because of a number of players’ absences due to the early start time, which was changed to avoid conflicting with England’s match against Wales in a 2006 World Cup qualifier. After maintaining a consistent position in the team, Deeney went on to be named Player of the Year for Chelmsley Town in the 2005–06 campaign. Head of Youth for Walsall Mick Halsall, who was only there to watch the game because his son was also playing and since the game he was supposed to see had been postponed, noticed Deeney. Deeney scored seven goals in an 11-4 victory despite being intoxicated while playing. When the then League Two team extended him an invitation for a trial, he only accepted after his Chelmsley management helped him get out of bed and paid for his taxi. Immediately after joining Walsall on December 18, 2006, Deeney was loaned out to Halesowen Town for the remainder of the 2006–07 campaign. Deeney submitted a written transfer request to numerous Championship clubs on August 4, 2010.
He had been informed earlier in the summer that he would be leaving Walsall, and he had cut back on his preseason workouts in protest at the team’s rigid stance while seeking to sell him. Two days later, he agreed to join Watford on a two-year contract with an initial cost of £250,000 that could rise to £500,000. This increased his weekly pay from £1,200 to £6,000. Walsall also agreed to a 20% sell-on fee should Watford decide to sell him in the future. Deeney stated in 2018 that this clause would subsequently make it more difficult for the club to complete potential deals. On the same day Deeney joined Watford, he contributed to their 3-2 victory over Norwich City on the season’s first day by replacing Marvin Sordell in the second half. Deeney discovered that he struggled with fitness in compared to his new colleagues because of his subpar preseason. On August 24, in the first round of the League Cup, he scored his first Watford goal against Notts County. Despite being mostly used on the wing by Malky Mackay, Deeney went on to make 40 appearances for Watford in his debut season, scoring three goals from 20 starts.
Deeney originally struggled to earn a starting position in the club at the start of the 2011–12 season as several of his early season games saw him relegated to a bench role. He quickly made his way into the starting lineup and made a total of 46 appearances as a striker under Sean Dyche’s direction. Deeney extended his contract in March through the end of the 2012–13 campaign. With 12 goals in all competitions, he concluded the 2011–12 season as Watford’s leading scorer. In addition, his strike against Ipswich Town in March 2012 earned him the Goal of the Season Award. He scored his first competitive goal for a professional team for Walsall in a 2-1 victory over Millwall in September 2007.
His solitary goal in the 2007–08 campaign was this one, and his two goals in the first half of the 2008–09 campaign started off similarly. However, Deeney’s discovery of a goal-scoring touch happened at the same time Chris Hutchings took over as manager. Deeney scored nine goals in Hutchings’ first 12 games in command, which was aided by the fact that his new manager began playing him in his preferred striking position rather than on the right wing as the previous manager Jimmy Mullen had. Deeney signed a new two-year contract on September 9, 2009, which will go through 2011. Deeney finished as Walsall’s leading scorer in the 2009–10 season with 14 goals, earning him the club’s Player of the Year honor.
At Walsall, Deeney began his professional career. In the 2006–2007 season, he briefly played on loan for Halesowen Town of the Southern League Premier Division. In 2010, he made a transfer to Watford of the Championship, where he led the team to promotion to the Premier League the following year. He spent 11 years and more than 400 games with Watford before signing with Birmingham City as a free agent in August 2021.
