Megan Rapinoe Bio

Megan Anna Rapinoe is a former professional soccer player from the United States who played the position of winger from the time she was born on July 5, 1985. It was during her time with the United States national team and Seattle Reign FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) that she spent most of her career playing soccer. The recipient of the Ballon d’Or Féminin and the recipient of the title of The Best FIFA Women’s Player in 2019, Rapinoe was a member of the national squad that won gold in the London Summer Olympics in 2012.

In addition to competing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019, the United States of America also participated in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending in second place. Between the years 2018 and 2020, Rapinoe assumed the role of co-captain of the national team with Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan. Previously, she was a member of the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) teams Chicago Red Stars, Philadelphia Independence, and MagicJack. Additionally, she was a member of Lyon Women, one of the teams competing in France’s Division 1 Féminine.

Rapinoe is very well-known all around the world for her clever playing style as well as her advocacy outside of the field of play. In the 122nd minute of the quarterfinal encounter between the United States of America and Brazil at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, her accurate cross to Abby Wambach resulted in an equalizer, which ultimately led to the United States of America winning the match in a penalty shootout. It was the last-minute goal that earned ESPN the ESPY Award for Best Play of the Year in 2011. At the Olympic Games held in London in 2012, she led the United States to victory by scoring three goals and scoring a team-high four assists. This helped the United States win the gold medal.

At the Olympic Games in 2012, she was the first player, male or female, to score a goal straight off a corner kick. On two separate occasions, she has accomplished this feat. Her victory in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was held in France, earned her both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball accolades. Several LGBTQIA+ groups, such as the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and Athlete Ally, are among the organizations that Rapinoe supports and advocates for. She was honored with the Board of Directors Award by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center in the year 2013.

The list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2020 that Time magazine compiled includes Rapinoe. During July in the year 2022, Joe Biden presented Rapinoe with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Rachael Rapinoe, who is her fraternal twin, was one of the five siblings that Rapinoe had when she was growing up in Redding, California. Her parents, Jim and Denise, helped her grow up there. Together, Denise and Jim brought up seven children, several of whom were not their own. Michael and Jenny are Denise’s son and daughter from a previous marriage. Five years later, on the heels of the arrival of her elder brother Brian, Denise came into possession of twins.

During their time in the military, Jim and her grandpa Jack also served. Her Italian background comes from her grandpa on her father’s side, and she also has Irish ancestry. At the age of three, she began playing soccer after witnessing her elder brother Brian play the sport. However, when the girls were in the second grade, Brian began taking drugs. She looked up to her older brother and admired him. She was ten years old when he was placed in juvenile detention, and he was fifteen years old when he was released. After that, he was incarcerated in several other facilities, including Pelican Bay State Prison.

Since then, Brian has made a concerted effort to abstain from using narcotics, particularly after seeing his younger sister’s achievements in international soccer. Up until she reached high school, Rapinoe spent most of her childhood playing for teams that were coached by her father. Instead of playing soccer at Foothill High School, Rapinoe was a member of the Elk Grove Pride club team, which is situated south of Sacramento. She was on the honor roll for every semester of her high school career, and she participated in track and field as a freshman and a sophomore. She also participated in basketball as a freshman, a sophomore, and a senior.

As a junior and a senior, Rapinoe was the recipient of the Parade and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American honors. Her selection to the McDonald’s All-American Girls High School Soccer West Team in 2004 was a significant accomplishment. In 1999, Rapinoe was a member of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) squad for adolescents under the age of 14 in the state of Northern California. In 2002, he was a member of the regional ODP team. The Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) was a competition that Rapinoe and her sister participated in from 2002 to 2005. They were both members of the Elk Grove Pride team.

The future national teammate of Rachael, Stephanie Cox, is also present. To participate in the team, she and her family traveled a distance of two and a half hours from their hometown. In the 18th minute of the match against the Peachtree City Lazers, she scored the equalizer goal, which tied the game 1–1 and brought the United States Youth Soccer National Championships to a close. During the national championships, Elk Grove United ended in second place when the Lazers scored the game-winning goal in the second half of the match.

At the University of Portland, which is located in Portland, Oregon, both Rapinoe and her sister were students. Before deciding to play for the Portland Pilots on full scholarships, the Rapinoe twins were serious about committing to Santa Clara University. During the 2004 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship, which took place in 2004, Rapinoe participated. The United States of America finished in third place. Due to this, she did not participate in any collegiate soccer games during that particular year.
