Life on Mars, Tracy K. Smith’s third poetry collection, was recognized with the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 2012. In examining who we humans are and what the great cosmos has in store for us, this book takes inspiration from the science fiction subgenre of the fiction genre.
In his poems filled with political urgency, sensitivity, elegy, and humor, Smith constructs alternative versions of the future, imagines the afterlife, and explores life on earth in our institutions, cities, and homes. Life on Mars was selected as the Best Book of the Year by The New Yorker, Library Journal, and Publishers Weekly, in addition to being named a New York Times Notable Book and an Editors’ Choice by The New York Times Book Review.
Kevin Young chose Smith’s first collection, The Body’s Question, as the winner of the Cave Canem Prize, awarded to the African American poet whose first book is considered the greatest of its kind. The poems, which span a variety of languages, speakers, and geographical locations, give testimony to love, sorrow, and belonging while at the same time claiming claim to an expansive and adaptable concept of identity.
The Academy of American Poets honored Smith for his work on his second book, titled Duende, by bestowing the James Laughlin Award on him. The collection’s name comes from a phrase that Federico Garcia Lorca popularized and spread worldwide. The Duende is the wild, erratic, and often tricky force an artist may endeavor to summon and deal with in their creative process.
In contrast to the Muse, which is something that lives outside of or above the artist, the Duende is something that lies dormant deep inside the artist as sheer need, anger, chaos, and passion, and it waits to be awoken and fought with, even if it comes at a high personal cost. This feeling of creative effort and daring comes up with forms of social and political battle, resistance, and survival, as Smith handles it. It also sheds light on the private turmoil that comes with getting a divorce and the consequences of it.
Ordinary Light is Smith’s memoir, in which she discusses topics such as her personal experience with racism and religion, as well as the passing of her mother soon after Smith graduated from Harvard. The book received honors as a Notable Book from both the New York Times and the Washington Post, in addition to being a nominee for the National Book Award.
Smith has previously held teaching positions at the City University of New York, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University before taking a place on the faculty at Princeton University in 2005. In 2015, she was appointed to lead Princeton’s creative writing department; in 2019, she was appointed to lead Princeton’s Lewis Center for the Arts.
In 2021, she became a teaching staff member at Harvard University, teaching English and African and African American studies. In 2017, Smith was honored to be appointed the 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States, a position she held until 2019. In addition, from 2018 to 2020, she was the presenter of the podcast The Slowdown. In each episode, she read and then briefly discussed a different poem she had chosen.
Wade in the Water, Smith’s fourth collection of poetry, was awarded the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for investigating the profound paradoxes intertwined in the history of the United States. Through factual “found” and “erasure” poetry, Smith disentangles the tangled web of racism and denial that serves as the primary enigma of the United States, and she creates a language of compassion as a potential way forward through our present turmoil.
The collection of her poems named Eternity: Selected Poems was released in the UK in 2019. In 2020, Smith and Changtai Bi collaborated to translate My Name Will Grow Wide Like a Tree, a collection of poems by a Chinese poet named Yi Lei. In 2021, she served as the guest editor for The Best American Poetry and was also the editor of the prose anthology. There’s a Revolution Outside, My Love, Letters from a Crisis, which she co-edited with John Freeman.
During Smith’s stint as Poet Laureate of the United States, which she held for two terms, she toured the length and breadth of the country, doing poetry readings and dialogues in various rural towns. During her time as laureate, she was the editor of the collection American Journal: Fifty Poems for Our Time and the founder of the podcast The Slowdown, which is broadcast on American Public Media. She was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in March of 2021, according to the votes of her peers.
Smith is the author of the librettos for two different operas. Castor and Patience, written in partnership with composer Gregory Spears, is about a dispute about the property that black people traditionally held. In July 2022, the Cincinnati Opera gave the world premiere of the piece. The other project, A Marvelous Order, created in collaboration with composer Judd Greenstein and visual artist Joshua Frankel, focuses on contrasting perspectives of New York City’s future development.
