Jane Hirshfield Bio

On February 24, 1953, Jane Hirshfield Born in New York City. She is a poet, translator, writer, and editor, and she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University in the first graduating class that included women. She then continued her education at the San Francisco Zen Center. Her collections of poetry include Ledger (which will be published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2020), The Beauty: Poems (which was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2015 and was longlisted for the National Book Award), and Given Sugar, Given Salt (which was published by HarperCollins in 2001 and was a nominee for the National Book Critics Circle Award).

In addition, Hirshfield is the author of the books Ten Windows: How Great Poems Transform the World Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry (published by HarperCollins in 1997), and an ebook titled The Heart of Haiku (2011), which is focused on Basho’s poetry. In addition, she has collaborated with Mariko Aratani and Robert Bly on editing and translating other publications.Hirshfield has developed a sensuously philosophical work that forces us to break from our ordinarily forward-thinking thought patterns.

Her poetry is more complex than it is. In all of its purity and openness, her language raises questions of a softly philosophical character… The poetry of Hirshfield clears a space for contemplation and transformation line by line, picture by image, using language that manages to be both enigmatic and every day. They encourage ethical consciousness while simultaneously establishing a careful balance. She is that uncommon thing in modern American life: a natural person of letters.

First and foremost, she is an expressive and demanding poet, but she is also the author of timeless essays, significant translations, and anthologies. She is a person of letters. Now add to this a life spent traveling the country, spreading the word about the wonders of poetry to almost all the states in the union. You have something that fulfills the old meaning of a person of letters when you put on top of that her graceful ambassadorship for poetry in the broader globe (think Japan, Poland, and China). Now you have something that satisfies the old sense of a person of letters when you add a writer who proves in every imaginable way that this life counts.

In addition to receiving fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Rockefeller Foundation, she has been awarded the Commonwealth Club of California Poetry Medal, the Poetry Center Book Award, the Donald Hall-Jane Kenyon Prize in American Literature, the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, Columbia University’s Translation Center Award, and the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award.

Her honors also include the Donald Hall-Jane Kenyon Prize in American Literature. Her work has been chosen for inclusion in seven editions of Best American Poetry, and 2004, the Academy of American Poets presented Hirshfield with the seventieth Academy Fellowship for exceptional literary accomplishment. Her work has also been translated into many other languages. 2019 was the year that she was inducted into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

This viewpoint is shared by Czeslaw Milosz, the Polish poet who won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Milosz remarked, “A genuine empathy for the pain of all sentient things… This aspect of Jane Hirshfield’s poetry is admirable. Her poetry focuses on our everyday lives spent in the company of other people, and our ongoing interactions with all the natural world have to offer, including plants, animals, and birds. Her poetry shines a light on the Buddhist virtue of mindfulness via the very sensual detail in which it is written.

Hirshfield’s poetry is a reflection of her absorption in a wide variety of poetic traditions, both Asian and Western, and these are the same interests that can be found in the essays that are included in Nine Gates and Ten Windows. Poets from Poland, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe, as well as those from Japan and China, have been of great significance to her throughout her life. The poem “Pebble” by Zbigniew Herbert inspires the mini-studies that Hirshfield has collected under the title “pebbles” and includes in After and Come, Thief.

Hirshfield has had teaching positions at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of San Francisco, The Bennington Writing Seminars, and the University of Cincinnati, where he was the Elliston Visiting Poet. However, he has never worked in academia on a full-time basis. She was awarded the Hellman Visiting Artist position in the Neuroscience Department at the University of California, San Francisco, in 2013 and the Mohr Visiting Professor in Poetry position at Stanford University in 2016.

At Queen’s University Belfast in 2022, she was the third person to hold the Seamus Heaney International Visiting Poetry Fellow position.  She has also been a core and associate faculty member in the Bennington Master of Fine Arts Writing Seminars and lectured at several writers’ conferences, such as Bread Loaf and the Napa Valley Writers Conference.
