Sharon Olds Bio

Sharon Olds is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished poets currently active. She was born in San Francisco, California, on November 19th, 1942. Even yet, she considers Berkeley, California, her permanent residence. Sharon Olds has been a successful poet for a very long time, so she has been awarded and honored dozens of times for her work. Today, you may find her working as a professor of creative writing at New York University. She served as the Poet Laureate of New York State for two years, establishing her as one of the most significant poets of the most recent few decades.

Dana Hall School was Sharon Olds’s primary educational institution; she graduated in grade 12. She is one of the most noteworthy graduates from this institution, which is significant since it has been responsible for the education of several individuals who have gone on to achieve fame. She was knowledgeable in all the disciplines but put the most effort into studying history, English, and creative writing.

When Sharon Olds was still a student at Dana Hall School, she had the opportunity to read the works of many of the poets who would later serve as a source of inspiration for her; thus, this was undoubtedly an essential component of her growth as a poet. Severaler well-known female poets, including Emily Dickinson and Edna St. Vincent Millay, mainly influenced her work.

After that, Sharon Olds completed her studies at Columbia University and received her Ph.D. in English in 1972. Sharon Olds has a significant amount of formal education and a high education overall, much like most contemporary poets. Poets who seem to have learned everything on their own are often historical figures in their own right, and their work has inspired subsequent writers such as Sharon Olds.

Even though Sharon Olds spent her childhood in Berkeley, she did not have the upbringing that most people now tend to connect with those who hail from that city. In her younger years, she identified herself as a Calvinist who believed in eternal damnation. Her mother condoned the violent behavior of her drunken and abusive father, who was also her father. As a youngster, Sharon Olds was prohibited from watching movies or television programs, and most of the literature she read was Christian propaganda. She was also not allowed to read comic books.

It would be a significant understatement to claim that she thrived and achieved success despite the challenging and tragic circumstances surrounding her upbringing. It would seem that she rejected the lessons she was given during her youth on various levels, given that she now considers herself an atheist, more or less.

Since Sharon Olds’ book Stag’s Leap was awarded the prestigious T.S. Eliot Prize for poetry, it is one of her most well-known and successful works. She had been married for thirty-two years before these poems were written, and she had just divorced her unfaithful husband then. Many of these poems are dramatizations of what she went through during this challenging period of her life.

Satan Says was her very first book of poetry, and it was made available to the public in 1980. After that, in 2004, she released a book titled “The Dead and the Living.” Her piece titled “The Wellspring,” first published in 1996, is filled with vivid imagery and seems to have assisted Sharon Olds in externalizing many of the complex feelings she had over the abuse she endured in the past. Sharon Olds held the New York State Poet Laureate position from 1998 through 2000.

Sharon Olds is widely recognized as one of the recent most prominent and accomplished female poets. In a society where poetry is sometimes seen as something mainly associated with women, the notion that poetry was once a male-dominated art form for a very long period may seem like a viewpoint that has become outdated.

Poetry was not always considered a traditionally feminine art form, and for a while, female poets had to fight for recognition to be recognized at all. In honor of her Stag’s Leap poetry collection, Sharon Olds became the very first woman from the United States to be awarded the prestigious T.S. Eliot Prize for poetry.

In many respects, Sharon Olds exemplifies the divergence that may be seen between many contemporary poets and many historical poets. She portrays the poet as an accomplished professor who has garnered several prestigious accolades within a literary community that is notoriously stuffy. The concept of the poet as the solitary artist who had humble beginnings and achieved famous for a small number of unheralded works was more prevalent in the nineteenth century.

However, this poetic figure had become less typical by the middle of the twentieth century. Sharon Olds is considered to be a contemporary poet in a variety of contexts and ways. Olds, who was given the title of New York State Poet Laureate between 1998 and 2000, now teaches graduate poetry classes at New York University and a writing group that she helped develop in a state hospital for the seriously impaired. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

She holds the position of Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Her other collection, Stag’s Leap, was selected as one of Oprah’s Favorite Reads of 2012 and a finalist for the T. S. Eliot Prize and the Forward Prize. In addition, the book Stag’s Leap was awarded the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2013.

She has also been awarded several other prestigious prizes, such as the Wallace Stevens Award, the Frost Medal for distinguished lifetime accomplishment in poetry, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for excellent lifetime achievement, and the Donald Hall-Jane Kenyon Prize in American Poetry, amongst many others. In 2023, King Felipe VI of Spain honored her with the first Joan Margarit International Poetry Award by presenting it to her personally.
