Rolling Stones Bio

The Rolling Stones is an English rock band that was established in London in 1962 and is still actively playing and recording their music. They have had throughout the course of many decades 8 songs that peaked at number one, and they have been among the top-grossing live acts globally. Initially, they made a brief and self-congratulatory proclamation that they were “the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World,” but others made this claim more consistently. The Rolling Stones’ “tongue and lips logo” initially appeared in 1971 and has since become a globally known emblem that is imprinted on apparel and other items. Its popularity has expanded beyond the band’s fan base, while at the same time, it has generated “hundreds of millions of pounds” in revenue for the Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones’ first permanent lineup was singer Mick Jagger, guitarist and harmonica player Brian Jones, guitarist Keith Richards, bassist Bill Wyman, pianist Ian Stewart, and drummer Charlie Watts. Jagger also played the harmonica. Richards and Wyman were the band’s original members. In addition to putting together the band and giving them their name, Jones also served as the band’s original manager up until 19-year-old Andrew Loog Oldham took over the position formally. Jones’ inability to compose songs, along with his declining contributions as a band member, led to Jagger and Richards becoming the band’s controlling figures up until the present day. Oldham prodded Jagger and Richards into a songwriting team that eventually wrote nearly all of the band’s material. Jones was kicked out of the band soon before his death in 1969, which was later determined to have been the result of accidental drowning.

His successors on guitar were first Mick Taylor, who left the band in 1974, and then Ronnie Wood, who is still the band’s guitarist today. Mick Taylor left the band first. Because Oldham and Jones believed that Ian Stewart was too unsightly and too elderly, they decided to remove him from the band’s public lineup just before the band made its first television appearance. Despite this, he continued to perform with them both live and in studios up to the year 1985, when he passed away. Wyman stepped down from his position in 1993 and was replaced by Darryl Jones. Watts passed away in the year 2021, at the age of 80, from cancer. Since then, Steve Jordan has been performing in the role of the drummer.

The Rolling Stones got their start performing cover songs and were at the vanguard of the British Invasion in 1964. They quickly became synonymous with the young and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s.  They scored a double-sided smash with “Ruby Tuesday” and “Let’s Spend the Night Together” in 1967, and they dabbled with psychedelic rock on their album Their Satanic Majesties Request. They made a comeback to their rhythm and blues origins with popular songs such as “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Honky Tonk Women, as well as albums such as Beggars Banquet, which had “Sympathy for the Devil,” and Let It Bleed, which featured “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Gimme Shelter.” The album Let It Bleed was the first of five albums that would go on to debut at number one in the UK.

Jones parted ways with the band not long before he passed away in 1969; he was succeeded as the band’s guitarist by Mick Taylor. In the same year, they made their first public appearance on stage under the moniker “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.” Sticky Fingers, which produced “Brown Sugar” and included the band’s first use of the tongue and lips logo, was the band’s first studio album to debut at number one in the US, beginning a run of eight consecutive number-one studio albums. Exile on Main Street, which had the smash song “Tumbling Dice,” and Goats Head Soup, which produced the popular ballad “Angie,” were both huge commercial successes.

In 1974, Ronnie Wood took over for Taylor in the band. The band proceeded to make great albums, including their two best-selling albums, Some Girls and Tattoo You, both of which included the song “Start Me Up.” Both albums were commercially successful. Steel Wheels is the album that is generally regarded as the band’s comeback record. This was followed by Voodoo Lounge, which was the album that reached number one all over the globe. Both albums were supported by extensive stadium and arena tours, as the Rolling Stones continued to be one of the most popular live acts throughout the world. By the year 2007, the Stones had already set the record for the highest-grossing concert tour of all time three times, and as recently as 2021, they were the live act that brought in the most revenue for the year.

The band remained on as a four-piece core from Wyman’s resignation in 1993 until Watts’ death in 2021. During this time, Darryl Jones played bass on tour and on most studio albums, and Steve Jordan took over as the band’s touring drummer after Watts’ passing. Their album “Blue & Lonesome,” which was released in 2016, achieved the position of number one in the UK. In 1950, while attending Dartford High School in Kent, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger became classmates and lifelong friends. In the year 1954, the Jagger family relocated to Wilmington, Kent, which was located five miles away.

In the middle of the 1950s, Mick Jagger and his buddy Dick Taylor created a garage band. The band’s repertoire consisted mostly of songs by artists like Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bo Diddley. Jagger and Richards had their next encounter on platform two of the Dartford train station on October 17, 1961. Richards recognized a common passion in music thanks to the recordings of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters that Jagger was carrying. Not much time passed before the two of them formed a musical relationship. Jagger had frequent get-togethers with Richards and Taylor at his home. Late in 1961, the get-togethers relocated to Taylor’s home, where Alan Etherington and Bob Beckwith eventually joined the original three to form what came to be known as the Blues Boys.

The rhythm and blues band Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated was featured in the March 1962 issue of the publication Jazz News. This article was read by the Blues Boys, who learned about the Ealing Jazz Club for the first time. The Blues Boys were successful in making Korner a fan by giving him a cassette of their finest tracks. They went to the Ealing Jazz Club on April 7 and spoke with members of Blues Incorporated, such as slide guitarist Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart, and drummer Charlie Watts. Their visit to the Ealing Jazz Club took place on April 7. Following their discussion with Korner, Jagger, and Richards joined the rest of the band for a jam session.
