Roger Corman Bio

Roger William Corman is a film director, producer, and actor who was born in the United States of America on April 5, 1926. As a pioneer in the industry of independent film, he is recognized by a variety of monikers, including “The Pope of Pop Cinema,” “The Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood,” and “The King of Cult.” He is also known as “The Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood.” His cycle of low-budget cult films adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s stories is one example of how many of Roger Corman’s movies are based on previously published works that already have a well-established reputation among critics.

In 1964, Roger Corman, who was admired by members of the French New Wave and Cahiers du Cinéma, became the youngest filmmaker to ever have a retrospective exhibit at the Cinémathèque Francaise as well as in the British Film Institute and the Museum of Modern Art. In addition to being a lifelong member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, he is a co-founder of New World Pictures and the founder of New Concorde, both of which he established. In 2009, he received an Honorary Academy honor “for his rich engendering of films and filmmakers.” This honor was presented to him in 2009.

Corman is also well-known for distributing the works of a number of well-known international directors in the United States. Some of these directors are Federico Fellini from Italy, Ingmar Bergman from Sweden, Francois Truffaut from France, and Akira Kurosawa from Japan. He was a highly influential figure in the New Hollywood filmmaking movement of the 1960s and 1970s, during which he served as a mentor to a great number of aspiring young filmmakers and helped them get their careers off the ground, including Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, John Sayles, and James Cameron, among others.

In addition, he was instrumental in the beginning stages of the careers of performers such as Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, Diane Ladd, and William Shatner, among others.[26] Corman has, on occasion, appeared in supporting roles in films directed by filmmakers who got their start working with him. These films include The Silence of the Lambs, The Godfather Part II, Apollo 13, The Manchurian Candidate, and Philadelphia, to name just a few.

Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel is the title of a documentary that was directed by Alex Stapleton and aired in 2011 at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. The documentary is about Roger Corman’s life and work. After a successful screening at Sundance, A&E IndieFilms decided to acquire the rights to broadcast the movie on television. Corman was the son of Anne (whose maiden name was High) and William Corman, an engineer. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. Gene, who was much younger than Roger, was an accomplished film producer who frequently worked in tandem with Roger. Both Corman and his brother received a Catholic education growing up.

After graduating from Beverly Hills High School, Corman continued his education at Stanford University, where he majored in industrial engineering. While attending Stanford, Corman came to the conclusion that he did not want to pursue a career in engineering. He had already completed half of the required coursework when he enlisted in the V-12 Navy College Training Program.

Following his enlistment in the United States Navy in 1944, he went on to complete his undergraduate education at Stanford University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering in 1947. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. While attending Stanford University, Corman became a member of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon and went through the initiation process. His brief stint as an engineer at U.S. Electrical Motors on Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles in 1948 lasted only four days; he started work on Monday and resigned from his position on Thursday, telling his boss, “I’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Roger Corman made the decision to pursue a career in filmmaking, despite the fact that Gene Corman was already working in the film industry as an agent. At the beginning of his employment at 20th Century Fox, Corman worked in the mail room. He started out as a clerk and eventually became a tale reader. The one piece of real estate that he was most enthusiastic about and contributed ideas for was adapted into the film The Gunfighter, which starred Gregory Peck.

After not receiving any credit for his work, Roger Corman decided to leave Fox and pursue a career in the film industry on his own. Corman received his education in English literature at Oxford University and spent some time living in Paris thanks to the G.I. Bill. After that, he went back to Los Angeles and attempted to rebuild his reputation within the movie business there. He worked as a stagehand for the television station KLAC and also as a messenger for the television network Fox. He was an assistant to Dick Hyland, a literary agent at Agent Dick Hyland’s agency.

In his spare time, Roger Corman developed a script, which he later sold to William F. Broidy at Allied Artists for the sum of $2,000. “Dick thought it was funny and let me pay myself a commission,” said Corman, who was the producer of the film. Richard Conte and Joan Bennett appeared in the movie that was renamed Highway Dragnet in 1953 but had the original title of House in the Sea. In addition, for the sole purpose of gaining experience, Corman also served as an associate producer on the film.

In order to create his debut feature, a science-fiction movie titled Monster from the Ocean Floor (1954), Corman leveraged his writing fee in addition to his personal connections to raise the necessary $12,000. Both Robert L. Lippert and Roger Corman’s own production company, Palo Alto, were responsible for the film’s distribution.
