Janusz Kamiński Bio

The Polish cinematographer and director of film and television, Janusz Zygmunt Kamiński, was born on June 27, 1959. He is a director of both film and television. Since 1993, he has been working as a cinematographer on Steven Spielberg’s films, according to the collaboration that he has created with the director. The work that he did on Steven Spielberg’s Holocaust drama Schindler’s List and the World War II epic Saving Private Ryan (1998) earned him the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

In addition, he has been nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the films Amistad (1997), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), War Horse (2011), Lincoln (2012), and West Side Story (2021). In addition, he has been nominated for six American Society of Cinematographers Awards and five British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards.

Cameron Crowe, James L. Brooks, and Julian Schnabel are just a few of the directors with whom he has collaborated in addition to Steven Spielberg. The horror film Lost Souls (2000), the NBC series The Event (2011), and the WE TV series The Divide (2014) were Kamiński’s first forays into the world of filmmaking. He has also become a director.

Both Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, both of which were photographed by Kamiński, were placed in the list of the best-photographed films of the 20th century by the American Society of Cinematographers in the year 2019. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College in Chicago, where he studied from 1982 to 1987, he went on to pursue a career in filmmaking. After that, he went on to study at the American Film Institute Conservatory, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree.

After that, he would seize his first chance to shoot and assist in directing the music video for the smash hit song “Why Can’t I Dance With Phil Donahue” by Club of Rome. After beginning his career as a gaffer, he ultimately became the second unit director of photography while working under the direction of the cinematographer Phedon Papamichael.

The romantic musical comedy Cool as Ice, which starred Vanilla Ice, was one of the many B-movies that he filmed for filmmakers Roger Corman and Katt Shea. He also shot films for other directors. It was Steven Spielberg who made the first discovery of Kamiński in the year 1991. Following his viewing of the television film Wildflower, Spielberg decided to recruit Kamiński to film Class of ’61, a television film in which Spielberg further acted as the producer.

The films Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan earned him the Academy Award for Best Cinematography on two separate occasions throughout the 1990s. Amistad, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, War Horse, Lincoln, and West Side Story are the following five films for which he has received further nominations. The American Federation of Independent Conservators bestowed upon him the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal in the year 2010.

During this year’s Annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards (ECA), the two special prize winners will be Janusz Kamiński, a Polish cinematographer who has won an Academy prize, and Stephen Lighthill, who has shot the documentary Berkeley, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Both of these individuals are well known for their decades-long work with Steven Spielberg.

In 1993, Kamiński, who has received a total of six nominations for the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award, four nominations for the Academy Award, five nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and four nominations for the Academy Award, started his collaboration with Spielberg on the film Schindler’s List. In the years that have passed since then, the two have collaborated on a wide range of projects, including Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, and The Fabelmans. Both Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan received the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, which Kamiński has won twice.

At the moment, he is serving as the Head of Discipline for Cinematography at the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory. In 2010, he was honored with the Deluxe “Bud Stone” Award from the ICG Emerging Cinematographer Awards for Outstanding Educational Contributions to the Art and Craft of Cinematography.

At its 25th annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards, the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600) will recognize two of its members for their contributions to the film industry. Cinematographer and director Janusz Kamiński, who has been awarded the Academy Award for his work on Steven Spielberg’s films Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, will be honored with the Panavision-presented Distinguished Filmmaker Award. Additionally, Stephen Lighthill, a cinematographer who has served as president of the American Society of Cinematographers in the past, will be presented with the ASC Mentor Award.

Currently, Lighthill serves as the Head of Discipline for Cinematography at the American Film Institute Conservatory. The documentary Berkeley, which was nominated for an Academy Award, Gimme Shelter, and CBS 60 Minutes were among the first documentaries and network news programs that he worked on throughout his career. Some of the shows he has worked on are Nash Bridges on CBS and Vietnam War Story on HBO.

Additional Academy Award nominations were bestowed to Kaminski for his work on the films Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan. He was also nominated for his work on the films West Side Story, Lincoln, War Horse, and Amistad, which were directed by Steven Spielberg, and for Julian Schnabel’s film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. In addition to directing films and television programs, he has been Spielberg’s director of photography since 1993.

Schreiber’s charity, BlueCheck Ukraine, which the actor established in the aftermath of the invasion to evaluate and generate funding for humanitarian groups on the ground, is collaborating with Ambros on the publication of the documentary, which will hit the internet on Thursday, February 22. The Nation Magazine is simultaneously releasing the video over many platforms, including its website, YouTube channel, and other social media profiles.
