Bio

Robin van Persie is a Dutch coach and former striker in the professional football league. Van Persie was widely regarded as a top striker of his period because to his exceptional skill with the ball, as well as his deft touch, clever positioning, and keen eye for the goal. In terms of goals scored for the Netherlands national team, he is in first place. His first coaching position is as an assistant coach for his childhood club Feyenoord.

Van Persie was born into a creative household in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. His mum, José Ras, is an artist and jeweller who works with kids with special needs. Bob Sr. is a sculptor and his father. His father took care of him when his parents split up, and he turned out rather well. Van Persie had significant behavioural issues in school, leading to frequent suspensions.

Van Persie moved to the posh north London borough of Hampstead after signing with Arsenal. Van Persie has been married to the Moroccan woman Bouchra (née Elbali) since 2005. They have two children together: a boy called Shaqueel, born in 2006, and a daughter named Dina, born in 2009.

When questioned if this influenced his decision to become a Muslim, Van Persie said, “You can not rely on it. Neither do I identify as Christian or Jewish. In my family, tolerance and acceptance of diversity were emphasised. Being a Muslim is an act of the heart. Even if it would make my wife happy, I would not go through with it. For me, faith is an essential part of my effort to become a morally upstanding human being.”

Van Persie joined the junior team of Rotterdam’s SBV Excelsior when he was five years old, but he left for Feyenoord when he was 16 when he had a “petulant” attitude dispute with the coaching staff. A Feyenoord injury crisis led to his rapid promotion to the first team, and he made his debut at the age of 17. He went on to make 15 starts for the club that season. Van Persie won the KNVB Best Young Talent award when he started for Feyenoord in the UEFA Cup final.

Van Persie signed a three-and-a-half-year professional deal with Feyenoord the next season, and on 6 February 2003, he scored five goals as Feyenoord defeated AGOVV Apeldoorn 6-1 in the KNVB Cup. However, after having disagreements with his manager Bert van Marwijk, Van Persie was sent to the bench. He was one of many Feyenoord players attacked by hooligans who stormed the field during a match between Feyenoord and Ajax’s reserve teams.

As Van Marwijk was unhappy with Van Persie’s body language while warming up for a Champions League qualifier, the coach sent him home the night before the 2002 UEFA Super Cup final against Real Madrid, deepening the gulf between the two. Van Persie concluded his turbulent first season as a regular starter for the first team with eight goals in 28 games and a runner-up finish in the KNVB Cup.

In the offseason, Feyenoord tried in vain to extend Van Persie’s contract, and the player spent much of the 2003–04 season on the bench due to his worsening relationship with coach Bert van Marwijk. He participated in the same number of games (28) but scored two less times. At the conclusion of the season, Feyenoord tried to sell Van Persie but were unable to find a buyer owing to his disciplinary history. Although the Gunners were looking for a long-term successor for Dennis Bergkamp, the Eredivisie club and the ageing veteran’s former club were unable to come to an agreement during the January transfer window.

Van Persie began his professional career as a winger with Feyenoord in the 2001–02 season, during which he made his first team debut and helped lead his team to the UEFA Cup Final. He was also voted the Dutch Football Talent of the Year that year. He spent the first five years of his career at Feyenoord, but after a disagreement with manager Bert van Marwijk, he moved to Arsenal in 2004 to replace Dennis Bergkamp.

When Arsène Wenger took over as manager of Arsenal, he switched Van Persie to a striker, where he has been a prolific goal scorer. Before leaving for rivals Manchester United in July 2012, he set a club record with 35 goals scored in 2011 and served as club captain for the 2011-12 season. In his debut season at the club, he won the Premier League and the Golden Boot for a second straight year.

Following two injury-plagued seasons at United, Van Persie was released in July 2015 to join Fenerbahçe. While in Turkey, Van Persie played a significant role in his first season but saw less playing time in the subsequent two seasons due to injuries. In January 2018, the club and player agreed to a buyout, and Van Persie returned to Feyenoord on a free transfer. He had not won a trophy since the 2013 FA Community Shield, but at the conclusion of the season he had led his hometown club to the Dutch Cup.

Van Persie made his senior national team debut in a friendly against Romania in 2005, after previously represented the Netherlands at the under-17, under-19, and under-21 levels. A month later, in a 4-0 victory against Finland, he scored his first goal for the national team at the senior level. During his time as captain of the Netherlands national team from 2013 to 2015, Van Persie earned over 100 caps and scored 50 goals. He has competed in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Championships, on behalf of his nation.
