Having been born on April 9, 1943, Charles ‘Chuck’ Mercein is a former professional American football running back who played for the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, and New York Jets during his seven seasons in the National Football League (NFL). The New York Giants selected him in the third round of the draft, making him the second player they selected altogether and the 31st player they selected overall. During his second season with the Giants, he led the team in rushing. However, due to an injury, he was eventually taken on waivers by the Green Bay Packers and joined them in the middle of the season.
His participation in the game-winning drive that the Packers made in the 1967 NFL Championship Game, sometimes known as the “Ice Bowl,” is the thing that Mercein is most renowned for as a professional runner. In the “Ice Bowl,” Mercein carried six times for a total of twenty yards and had two catches for a total of twenty-two yards. That game’s last and most memorable drive for sixty-eight yards was responsible for thirty-four of his total yards.
The most notable thing that he did was lift both of his arms behind Bart Starr, who had just completed a quarterback sneak to score the touchdown that won the game with 16 seconds left in regular time. Before his retirement in 1971, he was a member of the Packers from 1969 to 1971, after which he moved on to the Jets. 1961 was the year when the younger Mercein received his diploma, first from Sacred Heart School and subsequently from New Trier High School. As well as becoming an all-state fullback, he was the first high school athlete in the state of Illinois to ever throw a shot that was longer than sixty feet. His achievements of 61 feet, 1½ inches at Waukegan on April 29, 1961, and 60 feet, 5½ inches at Maine East six days later on May 5 both surpassed the state record of 58 feet, 5½ inches that was in place at the time.
Not a single one of them was acknowledged as a high school record in the state of Illinois, which was something that could only be accomplished in the state championships. The reference that Mike Pyle, a fellow New Trier alumnus who had also enrolled at Yale, provided for Mercein’s acceptance of a scholarship to attend Yale College was the key factor in his decision to accept the grant. During his time at Yale, Mercein was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity organization, namely the Phi Chapter.
Chuck Mercein, a veteran fullback, already had a great reputation and a strong recommendation when he joined the Jets in 1970, the team that was defending their title as champions of Super Bowl III. After being selected by the Giants in the National Football League Draft and by the Buffalo Bills in the American Football League Draft in 1965, Mercein would go on to spend two seasons with the New York Giants. During his second season with the Giants, he managed to run for a career-high 327 yards. In 1967, Mercein moved on to the Green Bay Packers.
Because it was thirteen degrees below zero outside at Lambeau Field, Mercein was able to contribute to the Packers’ victory against Dallas in the NFL Championship Game of that year, which was also known as the Ice Bowl. He was responsible for 34 of the 68 yards that were on the Packers’ game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. Two weeks later, Green Bay earned a victory against Oakland in the second Super Bowl.
At the beginning of the 1970 season, Mercein traveled to Washington’s training camp to play for Vince Lombardi, his old coach with the Packers. However, he was dismissed around the conclusion of the preseason. Gilbride, who had just transferred from Kings Point, was getting ready to start his first season at Southern Connecticut State University in the autumn of 1971, while Palmer was getting ready for his last season playing for Harry Shay at Southern Connecticut State University.
