Rick Middleton Bio

Richard David “Nifty” Middleton is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who was formerly a member of the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. He was born on December 4, 1953. Middleton participated as a kid with a minor ice hockey club from Wexford, Toronto, in the 1966 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. The tournament was held in Quebec.

After a stellar junior career with the Oshawa Generals, during which he led his league in scoring his last year and was nominated to the league’s Second All-Star Team, the Rangers selected Middleton as a right winger in the first round of the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft, with the 14th overall pick. Middleton went on to be drafted by the Rangers. During the 1973–1974 season, he played for the Rangers minor league affiliate, the Providence Reds of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he was honored as the rookie of the year and selected to the First All-Star Team in the AHL.

Middleton was promoted to the major club for the 1974–1975 season. Despite the injuries that limited the number of games he could play, he still managed to score 22 goals in the 47 games he did play. The season after that was not quite as impressive for him, as he only managed to score 24 goals in 77 games while displaying defensive weaknesses. On May 26, 1976, Middleton was included in a trade that sent Ken Hodge to the Boston Bruins. John Ferguson Sr., who serves as both the head coach and general manager of the Rangers, was sure that his club possessed sufficient youthful talent to warrant making Middleton disposable.

The guy that the Bruins received in exchange for Hodge was one who was ten years younger than Hodge and a faster skater. When Don Cherry, the head coach of the Bruins, worked with Middleton to improve his defensive abilities and turn him into a competent two-way player, the transaction became even more one-sided in favor of the Bruins. Middleton became a star in Boston, scoring a hat trick in his first game as a Bruin (which took place on October 7, 1976, against Minnesota) and approximately nine hundred points in a Bruins shirt over the course of the next twelve years.

Hodge, on the other hand, only played one more season before his career came to an end. Middleton, who was typically teamed with center Barry Pederson, amassed at least forty goals and ninety points in each of the previous five seasons for the Bruins, leading the team to consistent record-setting success. His leadership was recognized when, in 1985, he was appointed co-captain of the team, along with Ray Bourque, to follow Terry O’Reilly. He remained in this position until his retirement, during which time he wore the “C” during home games. Middleton was considered to be one of the greatest players to ever compete in a one-on-one match (citation required), and he presently stands second all-time among players who have scored 400 or more goals in terms of lifetime shooting % (19.7).

The 1981–1982 season was Middleton’s best year since it was during that season that he scored a career-high 51 goals, earned the Lady Byng Trophy for excellence and sportsmanship, and was selected for the Second All-Star Team in the National Hockey League (NHL). The following year, Middleton guided the Bruins to the best regular season record in the league. That same year, he also established two marks that have yet to be surpassed: the most points scored in the playoffs by a player who did not make it to the finals (33), and the most points scored in a single playoff series (19, versus Buffalo in the quarterfinals).

His 105 points scored in the 1983–1984 season tied Ken Hodge’s team record for the most points scored in a season by a right winger, a mark that has not been broken to this day. Middleton set a Bruins team record with 25 shorthanded goals scored for Boston; this mark was later exceeded by Brad Marchand in the 2018–19 season. Since he had surpassed Derek Sanderson’s previous record of 24 in 1985, Middleton had been the club record holder for more than 30 years.

Middleton was also a standout performer for Canada on the international stage, earning a spot on the national team for both the 1981 and 1984 editions of the Canada Cup. During the 1984 series, he was part of the top line that included Wayne Gretzky and Michel Goulet. Together, they played seven games, and he scored four goals and had four assists. Additionally, Middleton was a participant in the National Hockey League All-Star Game in 1981, 1982, and 1984.

At the time of his retirement following the 1987–1988 season, Middleton was ranked third on the all-time regular-season scoring list with the Boston Bruins, trailing only Johnny Bucyk and Phil Esposito. He had 402 goals and 496 assists for a total of 898 points, which was 10 more than Bobby Orr had accumulated. Middleton finished in fifth place at the end of the 2020-21 season, having been passed on the list by both Raymond Bourque and Patrice Bergeron.

This moved Middleton down one spot from his previous position. Because Middleton scored 100 points for Boston in the playoffs, he is now tied for sixth place on the franchise’s all-time list with Bucyk. Before their game at TD Garden on November 29, 2018, against the New York Islanders, the Boston Bruins honored Middleton by retiring his number 16 jersey.
