Rob Blake Bio

Robert Bowlby Blake is a former player and current executive in the professional ice hockey league in Canada. He was born on December 10, 1969. The Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL) have appointed him as their general manager at the moment. After being drafted by the Kings in 1988, he spent his first 11 seasons with the club, during which time he led the Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals, won the James Norris Memorial Trophy, and served as team captain for five seasons. All of these accomplishments came during his time with the Kings.

Blake was a part of the Colorado Avalanche club that won the Stanley Cup in 2001 after being acquired by the Avalanche in a trade in the year 2001. It was the only Stanley Cup he ever won when he was a player, but in 2014, as a member of the Kings’ front office, he won the Cup again. After playing with the Los Angeles Kings for a further two seasons, Blake signed with the San Jose Sharks in 2008 and served as the team’s captain until the end of the 2009–10 season. In 2014, after being nominated for the first time in 2010, Blake was finally inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

On the international stage, Blake was a member of the Canadian national team that competed in the Winter Olympics in 1998, 2002, and 2006. He was a part of the team that won gold in 2002, making him the 11th member of the Triple Gold Club. In 2018, he was admitted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame. In the 1988 National Hockey League Entry Draft, the Los Angeles Kings chose Blake with the 70th overall pick.

He had just finished his freshman year at Bowling Green State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) when he was drafted. He went on to play a total of three years at the collegiate levels, receiving honors on the first all-star teams for both the CCHA and the NCAA West in the year 1990. Additionally, Blake was the very first player to ever be honored with the title of CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman. Blake joined the Kings for the final four games of the 1989–90 season, forgoing his final year of collegiate eligibility in the process.

He then went on to score 46 points in his first season as a professional in 1990–91, earning him a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team. After posting 59 points in his third season, Blake helped guide the Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, where they were ultimately eliminated by the Montreal Canadiens in five games. Blake’s 59 points helped propel the Kings to the Finals. The year after that, in 1993–1994, Blake had a career year, setting new highs for assists (48) and points (68), but the Kings did not make the playoffs.

In the same year that an injury limited Blake’s playing time to just six games, the Kings dealt team captain Wayne Gretzky to the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline in 1995–1996, which resulted in the vacant position of team captain for the Kings. Blake is the 11th person to ever hold the position of captain in the team’s history. Between the years 1996 and 2001, he held the position of captain. After scoring a career-high 23 goals and amassing a total of 50 points during the 1997–1998 season, Blake was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy, which is given to the National Hockey League’s finest defenseman.

Blake was about to become a free agent in the 2001 off-season, so the Kings decided to trade him to the Colorado Avalanche on February 21, 2001. The Kings also sent Steven Reinprecht to the Avalanche at the same time. In return, the Kings received Adam Deadmarsh, Aaron Miller, Jared Aulin, and a first-round pick, which they used to choose Dave Steckel. Blake played with Los Angeles for 11 seasons until being transferred to Colorado late in the 2000–01 season.

Upon arriving in Colorado, Blake made an immediate impact for the Avalanche, earning 10 points in the final 13 games of the regular season after being acquired in the trade. After playing a second-round series against his previous club, the Kings, in the 2001 playoffs, he went on to win his first and only Stanley Cup with the Avalanche, adding 19 points in 23 playoff games. After that, he retired from professional hockey. Blake was named to the NHL’s second All-Star team after finishing the regular season with a point total of 59 after participating in 67 games.

Blake re-signed with the Avalanche in the off-season on July 1, 2001, this time agreeing to a five-year deal with the Avalanche that included an optional sixth year. Blake scored his highest total with the Avalanche earning 56 points in 75 games, which ranked third amongst NHL defensemen, in the 2001–02 season. However, the Avalanche’s attempt to defend the Stanley Cup was unsuccessful as they were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference finals. Blake was the top defenseman for the Avalanche. Blake was chosen for the NHL’s second All-Star team for the third season in a row, continuing his streak of success.

On October 29, 2002, during the next season of 2002–03, Blake tallied his 500th point of his career while competing against the Minnesota Wild. Blake came in second position among Avalanche defensemen with 45 points in 79 games, which led to him ranking fifth in the voting for the Norris Trophy. He was named for the NHL All-Star Game in each of his first three seasons with the Avalanche, and in the 2003–04 season, he was selected as a starter for the NHL All-Star Game that was held in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

He skated the final game of the season with the Avalanche, finishing the year tied for ninth in the NHL among defensemen with 46 points. Blake came back to the Avalanche for the final season of his contract in 2005–06, having missed the previous season due to the lockout that occurred during the 2004–05 NHL season. He recorded 51 points for the Avalanche in 81 games, marking the seventh time in his career that he exceeded the 50-point level in scoring. He continued his scoring presence among the Avalanche. On April 3, 2006, he scored his 200th career goal in the National Hockey League while playing against the Chicago Blackhawks. This made him just the 17th defenseman in the history of the NHL to ever accomplish this milestone.
