Richard Powers was born in 1957 in Evanston, Illinois. When Powers was eleven years old, his family relocated to Thailand after his father, a high school administrator, acquired a position at the International School of Bangkok. The five years Powers and her family spent in Thailand were formative, life-altering, and “eye-opening,” and it was there that Powers realized she had a talent for creativity. His insatiable need for knowledge led him to discover a lifelong passion for music and literature.
Nonfiction, especially biographies, and science captivated him from an early age, and as a kid, he considered careers in fields like paleontology, oceanography, and archaeology. He attended the University of Illinois as a physics major in 1975. An honors professor in Powers’ first semester of college advised him to switch his major to English and rhetoric because it was the “perfect place for someone who wanted an aerial view” of the world. He graduated with a BA in history and then earned an MA in literature.
Powers became a computer programmer and data processor after finishing college. He kept up his habit of devouring books in his spare time, reading widely across genres and topics including history, sociology, politics, philosophy, and fiction. The day he saw August Sander’s “Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance,” a black-and-white shot from 1914, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston was formative. Powers couldn’t shake the image from his mind.
His debut novel, Three Young Farmers on Their Way to a Dance, was written just forty-eight hours after he quit his job. He reasoned, “I’m never going to get another shot at this, so I might as well put everything that I know in this book.” However, Powers was taken aback by the book’s critical acclaim and the subsequent commencement of his writing career.
The Echo Maker, published in 2006, won the National Book Award for Fiction and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist; The Overstory, published in 2019, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Book Prize, the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, among other accolades. An intense motivation permeates all of Powers’ novels, which he attributes to the novelist’s responsibility. “I suppose what a novelist really wants to do is not merely a reader’s beliefs about things — that job is the specialty of informative nonfiction — but the way that a reader feels, sees, and attends to the processes all around her,” writes author and critic David Foster Wallace.
Powers, at age 55, was inspired to write The Overstory after spending a day among the northern California redwoods. It was just an instinctive reaction, man. Simply, I couldn’t help but develop a crush on trees. Simple and direct. The more information I could find about them, the better. And check out all the different kinds of trees I could get to from where I stood.”
2018’s The Overstory is a stunning portrayal of nature and a passionate work of activism and resistance. The Pulitzer Prize Board, in awarding it to Powers, referred to The Overstory as “an ingeniously structured narrative that branches and canopies like the trees at the story’s core,” and author Ann Patchett called it “the best novel ever written about trees, and really just one of the best novels, period.”
Powers’ insightful, often poetic prose draws us at once more deeply toward the infinitude of the imagination and more vigorously toward the urgencies of the real and familiar stakes rattling our persons and our planet,” said Tracy K. Smith, a poet, and Pulitzer Prize winner. The novel made the 2021 Book Prize shortlist and was also a finalist for the National Book Award and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.
Powers now make her home in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, just steps from a remnant of the Eastern United States’ remaining old-growth forest. He finds both solace and inspiration in the woods, where he spends a lot of his time. When I go for a walk in the woods, inspiration strikes. I need to take a break from the route and write some things down. There is no longer any sense that I am trudging through my task.
In 1972, Mom, Dad, and the kids moved back to the States. In DeKalb, Illinois, he graduated from high school and continued his education at the University of Illinois. He started off studying physics but then moved to English, where he eventually earned a BA and MA.
