Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born on September 15, 1977, in the city of Enugu, Nigeria. She was raised in Nsukka, Nigeria, the fifth of her parents’ six children. Her father, James Nwoye Adichie, taught statistics at Nigeria’s Nsukka campus of the University of Nigeria. Soon after, he was promoted to serve as the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Grace Ifeoma, her mother, was the institution’s first female registrar.

She finished high school at the University institution, where she achieved academic success and was honored with several awards. After finishing high school, she enrolled at the University of Nigeria with the intention of majoring in both medicine and pharmacy. In her role as editor of the school publication “Compass,” she was able to showcase her writing abilities. At the age of 19, she left Nigeria for the United States, where she attended Drexel University in Philadelphia to study political science and communications.

To be near her sister, she went to Eastern Connecticut State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree with the honors designation summa cum laude in 2001. While she was a student, she contributed several pieces to the campus newspaper. She continued her education by earning a Master of Arts in African Studies from Yale University in 2008 and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University in 2003.

She spent the 2005–2006 school year as a fellow at Princeton as part of her studies at Yale. She was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship in 2008 and spent 2011–2012 as a scholar at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Following the success of her short tale, she decided to write another in the same style, which resulted in the publication of “That Harmattan Morning,” a joint winner of the BBC Short Tale Awards. Once again, in 2002-2003, her story “The American Embassy” won her the O Henry Prize and the David T. Wong International Short Story Prize.

The Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book was awarded to her for her debut novel “Purple Hibiscus” in 2003. Half of a Yellow Sun, after the flag of the short-lived nation of Biafra, was the title of her second novel, which was about the Nigerian Civil War. The film adaptation of the book, directed by Biyi Bandele, was nominated for and ultimately won the British Academy Film Award.

The New York Times named her third novel, “Americanah,” one of the year’s 10 best. A young Nigerian man experiences racism in the United States. She also published “The Thing Around Your Neck,” a collection of twelve short stories that were included in the anthology The Best American Short Stories 2011. In 2017, her newest novel, “Dear Ijeawele,” was released to the public and quickly became a critical success.
Among the highest honors bestowed upon US intellectuals is her election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and she has been named one of the best writers under the age of 40.

Adichie is a popular speaker who has given several talks, including a TED presentation that quickly became one of the most viewed interviews in history. She gave a talk about feminism in 2012 that was turned into a book and served as inspiration for the song “Flawless” by American singer Beyonce. She has been featured on a variety of lists and has garnered many accolades for her writing.
