Ralf Rangnick, a German professional football coach, executive, and former player who was born on June 29, 1958, is presently in charge of the Austrian national team. Backnang is where Rangnick was born and reared. Dietrich and Erika Rangnick, his parents, first met in 1945 in Lichtenstein, Saxony’s Ore Mountains. His father is from Königsberg, while his mother is from Breslau. One of the first coaches to promote football strategy was Rangnick, who did so most prominently in December 1998 at a ZDF SportsStudio TV show. As a consequence, Rangnick earned the nickname “professor,” which was first used to tease him but has now come to be respected. In the 1980s, Rangnick started his coaching career.
He initially served as player-coach at Viktoria Backnang, the club where he grew up, and then played and coached for VfB Stuttgart II and TSV Lippoldsweiler. Rangnick took over as coach of VfB Stuttgart on May 3 and oversaw the team’s last five matches, finishing the 1998–99 season in 11th position. He prevailed in two of the club’s five championship games. His debut ended in a 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich. Rangnick had previously played for the club, coached at the amateur and under-19 levels, and was now the first-team coach. The team’s solid eighth-place result in the 1999–2000 Bundesliga was its first complete season under his leadership.
The squad managed to go to the round of 16 in the 2000–01 UEFA Cup after winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup and the DFB–Pokal semifinals despite the considerably harder following season. Stuttgart was still lingering in the relegation zone at the midway mark due to their Bundesliga performance. Stuttgart fired Rangnick after their February 2001 European departure. [34] On February 22, 2001, in the UEFA Cup, Celta de Vigo defeated him 2-1. Stuttgart was in 17th place when he was fired. Rangnick had a final record of 36 victories, 16 ties, and 34 defeats.
He took over as the head coach of SC Korb in 1988, where he served for two seasons before returning to VfB Stuttgart for four to oversee the Under-19 squad. He won the U-19 Bundesliga in 1991, the top prize in German U-19 football. Rangnick then spent two seasons as the manager of SSV Reutlingen 05 before making a comeback to first-team management in 1995. His first season saw the team finish in fourth place under his leadership.
They had a solid start to the following season, and by Christmas, the team was in the thick of their promotion drive. Rangnick, however, would not see the season through to the end since his old team Ulm contacted him in January 1997. When Rangnick departed the team, Reutlingen was in fifth place. Greuther Fürth defeated Ulm 2-0 in his team’s debut game in charge. Ulm was also a member of the Regionalliga Süd, and despite Rangnick only managing a sixth-place finish for the rest of the 1996–1997 campaign, they began the 1997–1998 campaign with a 3–1 victory against Karlsruher SC II.
In 1998, they won the Regionalliga Süd title. Rangnick made a good adjustment to life in the 2. Bundesliga and Ulm made a determined drive for a promotion that brought them to the Bundesliga for the first time ever in 2000. He secured a contract to transfer to top-flight VfB Stuttgart for the next season during the winter break of his second season. This was meant to be kept a secret until the conclusion of the season, but it became known to the public in February. This sparked a backlash, particularly when the squad started to slip in the standings, and towards the end of March, Rangnick abruptly left his position before taking over for Stuttgart for the club’s last five games. In his last game, he was defeated by SpVgg Unterhaching 2-0.
Rangnick started his playing career with VfB Stuttgart, but after becoming known for his tactical prowess, he was promoted to player-coach.[15] While he was a student at the University of Sussex, he spent a brief period of time playing for the English team Southwick. His playing career was brief and mostly focused on Germany. At the age of 25, Rangnick started his coaching career, which followed his playing career. He was recruited by his old team Ulm 1846 in 1997, and during his first season there, they won the Regionalliga Süd.
After winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000, Rangnick was later hired by Bundesliga team VfB Stuttgart, but he was fired in 2001. He then joined Hannover 96 and won the 2. Bundesliga until being fired in 2004. Rangnick briefly played for Schalke 04 before joining 1899 Hoffenheim in 2006, where he won back-to-back promotions to the Bundesliga. He left the team in 2011 and joined Schalke 04 again, where he won the 2011 DFB-Pokal and advanced to the UEFA Champions League semifinals. He then held the position of head coach at RB Leipzig for two terms from 2015 and 2019.
Rangnick joined Red Bull as director of football in 2012 and has since assisted with their foray into European football, emphasizing the acquisition of untested players and the development of youth programs with a global scouting foundation and an offensive on-pitch attitude across their teams. As a consequence, while his leadership, the Red Bull teams’ market worth increased from €120 million to €1.2 billion. Their clubs have also seen consistent domestic success, made large player transfer profits, and which has resulted in Rangnick’s elevation to head of sport and development in 2019. He left Red Bull in 2020 and, in 2021, became the manager of sports and development for the Russian team Lokomotiv Moscow. Later that year, Rangnick was named Manchester United’s temporary manager till the conclusion of the 2021–22 season.
Rangnick is credited with creating Gegenpressing, wherein the team instantly tries to regain control after losing it rather than retreating to regroup. His teams are renowned for their aggressive pressing, robust offensive production, and widespread use of the zonal marking. Among others, he is acknowledged for having an impact on Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralph Hasenhüttl, and Jürgen Klopp.
