American television playwright and producer Norman Milton Lear has produced, written, created, or developed more than 100 series. [1] All in the Family, which won several awards, as well as Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times are just a few of the well-known 1970s sitcoms that Lear is credited with creating. Lear worked in public relations after the Second World War. His Uncle Jack provided the motivation for the professional choice: “Every time he saw me, my dad’s brother Jack would flip me a quarter. I wanted to be a press agent because he was one. That was the only example I ever had. So all I wanted to be when I grew up was a man who could give his nephew a quarter.” Lear made the decision to travel to California in order to relaunch his career in public relations. He drove across the nation with his little daughter.
Lear stumbled into a performance of Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw on his first night in Los Angeles at the 90-seat theater-in-the-round Circle Theater off Sunset Boulevard. Sydney Chaplin, the son of performers Charlie Chaplin and Lita Grey, participated in the performance as an actor. After the performance, Charlie Chaplin gave a performance in front of Lear, together with Alan Mowbray and Dame Gladys Cooper.
Elaine, a first cousin of Lear’s living in Los Angeles, was wed to Ed Simmons, a wannabe comedy writer. For a business named The Gans Brothers, Simmons and Lear collaborated to sell home goods door-to-door. Later, they marketed family pictures door-to-door. Lear and Simmons produced comedic skits for Martin and Lewis, Rowan and Martin, and other television appearances during the 1950s. When Martin and Lewis appeared on the Colgate Comedy Hour, they regularly wrote for them, and according to a 1953 Billboard story, Lear and Simmons were each promised a record-breaking $52,000 to write for five further Martin and Lewis appearances that year.
Lear said that Jerry Lewis had engaged him and Simmons as writers for Martin and Lewis three weeks before the comedy team’s debut on the Colgate Comedy Hour in 1950. This was in a 2015 interview with Vanity Magazine. Lear also confirmed in 1986 that for three years, he and Simmons served as The Martin and Lewis Show’s primary writers.
In 1954, Lear was hired as a writer to save the brand-new CBS comedy Honestly, Celeste! starring Celeste Holm, but the show was canceled after just eight episodes. Following Nat Hiken’s departure as the show’s director at this period, he took over as producer of the 26-episode comedy The Martha Raye Show on NBC. Lear also contributed to The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show, which ran from 1956 through 1961 and included several of the opening monologues. Henry Fonda starred in The Deputy, Lear’s debut television production, a half-hour western for Revue Studios in 1959.
Lear has continued to actively develop television, resulting in the 2022 Netflix revival of Good Times and the 2017 remake of One Day at a Time. In New Haven, Connecticut, Lear was born. the child of traveling salesman Hyman “Herman” Lear and Jeanette. His younger sister was Claire Lear Brown. Lear celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and grew up in a Jewish family in Connecticut. His father’s family was Russian, whilst his mother was Ukrainian.
Lear’s father was imprisoned for brokering phony bonds while Lear was nine years old and lived with his family in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Lear described his father as a “rascal,” and he said that both Edith Bunker and Archie Bunker, who Lear portrayed as a white Protestant on the show, were somewhat influenced by both his mother and father. Lear, however, claims that another incident he had when he was nine years old, when he first saw notoriously anti-semitic Catholic radio priest Father Charles Coughlin, served as the inspiration for his career of campaigning. Lear also said that he would listen to more of Coughlin’s radio lectures over time. He did so and learned that Coughlin would sometimes use inventive means to spread anti-Semitism by focusing on those that Jews regarded as “great heroes,” such as US President Franklin Roosevelt. Lear attended Emerson College in Boston after completing his high school education at Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut, but left in 1942 to enlist in the US Army Air Forces.
In September 1942, Lear joined the Army of the United States. He worked as a radio operator/gunner on Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers in the Mediterranean theatre with the 772nd Bomb Squadron, 463rd Bomb Group of the Fifteenth Air Force. He has also spoken about attacking Germany in the European theatre.
52 combat missions were flown by Lear, who received the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters. Lear was released from the Army in 1945, and the books Crew Umbriago, written by tail gunner Daniel P. Carroll, and 772nd Bomb Squadron: The Men, The Memories, published by Turner Publishing and Co., both include the stories of other World War II crew members.
Five Emmys, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors are just a few of the many honors that Lear has earned. The Television Academy Hall of Fame includes him. Lear is renowned for his political engagement and for supporting politicians and liberal and progressive causes. To combat the dominance of the Christian right in politics, he created the advocacy group People for the American Way in 1980. In the early 2000s, he organized a tour while carrying a copy of the Declaration of Independence.
