Bio

Portland Trail Blazers, American professional basketball team headquartered in Portland, Oregon, that competes in the National Basketball Association’s Western Conference (NBA). The Trail Blazers have one NBA title (1977) and three conference championships (1977, 1990, and 1992).

The Trail Blazers entered the league in 1970 as an expansion franchise. Their moniker is a reference to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which came to a close in present-day Portland. During those years, one bright spot was the play of forward-centre Sidney Wicks, who was picked by the team in 1971 and was an all-star in each of his first four NBA seasons.

Portland made a remarkable comeback in 1976–77, beginning with the franchise’s first winning record (49–33) during the regular season. Unaffected by their lack of playoff experience, the Blazers—led by first-year head coach Jack Ramsay and featuring a front line of Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas, as well as guard Lionel Hollins—beat the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers in the postseason to advance to the NBA finals. There they met the Philadelphia 76ers, who took the first two games before Portland came back to win the final four games and claim the NBA title. The Trail Blazers qualified for the playoffs in each of the following four seasons, but were eliminated in the first round of each postseason series.

After missing the playoffs in 1981–82, the Blazers returned to the postseason in 1982–83, the franchise’s first of 21 consecutive playoff appearances. Clyde Drexler was drafted by the Trail Blazers in 1983. He would play 12 seasons with the team and became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. The Blazers maintained their playoff run under Drexler, but moved past the first round of the playoffs just once in his first six seasons in Portland.

The Blazers earned some ignominy in 1984, when they selected Sam Bowie (who would go on to play just four injury-plagued seasons with Portland) with the second pick, ahead of future superstar Michael Jordan, who was selected by the Bulls with the very next pick. The Trail Blazers won their first three playoff series in 1989–90, led by Drexler, point guard Terry Porter, and forward Jerome Kersey.

The club was eliminated from the NBA finals in five games by the Detroit Pistons. The next season, after compiling a franchise-best 63–19 record, the Blazers were eliminated in the conference finals by the Lakers, and in 1991–92, Portland advanced to the NBA finals but lost in a six-game series to the Chicago Bulls. From 1992–93 to 1997–98, the Blazers returned to their earlier pattern of postseason disappointment, losing in the first round in six consecutive seasons. The following season, the Blazers advanced to the conference finals, where they lost a close seven-game series to the Lakers, which was notable for the Trail Blazers blowing a 15-point fourth-quarter lead in the deciding game—at the time, the largest lead surrendered in the final period of a playoff series.

In the early 2000s, the club earned the derogatory moniker “Jail Blazers” because to the high number of Portland players who were involved in legal difficulties. Around the same time, the Blazers’ postseason streak expired, and the franchise entered a rebuilding phase that peaked with a last-place divisional finish in 2005–06. The Trail Blazers returned to the postseason for three straight seasons beginning in 2008–09, but Roy was forced to retire early in 2011 due to injury, and the Blazers dropped out of contention in 2011–12. The squad swiftly regrouped and advanced to the playoffs in 2013–14, adding 21 wins to its previous season total.

It lost several important free agents following the 2014–15 season and was widely anticipated to be one of the league’s worst teams the following season, but rallied around star guard Damian Lillard to extend its postseason streak to three seasons. In comparison, the Blazers fell short of preseason expectations in 2016–17, qualifying for the Western Conference playoffs as the eighth seed and being swept in the initial postseason round. In 2017–18, the Blazers won the division but were swept in the first round of the playoffs. Portland bounced back the next season, reaching the conference finals for the first time in over two decades, mostly due to clutch playoff performances by Lillard and fellow star guard CJ McCollum.
