Billie Jean King (November 22, 1943) is a former world number one tennis player from the United States. King won 12 Grand Slam singles trophies, 16 women’s doubles titles, and 11 mixed doubles titles during his career. Her father played basketball, baseball, and track, while her mother excelled at swimming. Randy Moffitt, her younger brother, went on to throw for the San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, and Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball for 12 years. She was also a superb baseball and softball player as a kid, starting at shortstop on a team with girls 4–5 years her senior. The squad went on to win the softball tournament in Long Beach. One of King’s early run-ins with the tennis establishment and status quo occurred when she was barred from participating in a tournament group photo because she was wearing tennis shorts (made by her mother) rather than the traditional white tennis dress.
King and his family were members of the Church of the Brethren in Long Beach, where the minister was Bob Richards, a former athlete and two-time Olympic pole vaulting champion. “What are you going to do with your life?” Richards asked King one day when she was 13 or 14. “I’m going to be the best tennis player in the world, Reverend,” she declared.
Long Beach Polytechnic High School was where King went to school. She went to Los Angeles State College, which is now known as California State University, Los Angeles, after graduating in 1961. (Cal State LA). She didn’t finish high school and dropped out in 1964 to pursue tennis full-time. She met Larry King in a library in 1963 while attending Cal State.
When Billie Jean was 20 and Larry was 19, they got engaged while still in school and married in Long Beach on September 17, 1965. With her win at the French Open in 1972, King became only the sixth woman in tennis history to win singles titles at all four Grand Slam tournaments, earning her the title of “career Grand Slam.” In mixed doubles, she also won a Grand Slam. Only the Australian Open escaped her in women’s doubles.
At Wimbledon, King won a total of 20 trophies — six in singles, ten in women’s doubles, and four in mixed doubles – setting a new record.From 1959 through 1983, King competed in 51 Grand Slam singles tournaments, reaching the semi-finals in 27 of them and the quarterfinals in 40. Six Grand Slam singles events saw King finish runner-up. Her 11–2 career record in deuce third sets, or third sets that were knotted 5–5 before being resolved was an indication of her mental toughness in Grand Slam singles competitions. King won 129 singles titles, including 78 WTA titles, for a total of US$1,966,487 in her career.
