Philip Walter Foden is an English professional footballer who was born on May 28, 2000. He now plays as a midfielder for Manchester City, a club that competes in the Premier League, as well as for the England national team. In 2017, Foden earned the FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball award following England’s excellent campaign in the Under-17 World Cup. This accolade was the precursor to Foden’s breakout into the professional football industry. In the same year, he made his debut for City, and in December of that year, he was awarded the title of BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.
Foden has subsequently made over 200 games for the club, during which time he has won fourteen honors, the most notable of which was the continental triple in 2022–23. In addition, in 2018, Foden became the youngest player to ever receive a winner’s medal for the Premier League. He became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League in 2019, and he is the youngest English player to both start a match and score in the knockout stages of the competition. In 2019, he also won a second Premier League title and became the youngest-ever goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League. Both the Premier League Young Player of the Season and the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Young Player of the Year were awarded to him in 2021.
Foden has competed for England at multiple youth levels, earning a total of 51 caps and scoring 19 goals for England. On August 25, 2020, he was given his first call-up to the senior team, and he made his debut on September 5, 2020, a victory against Iceland in the UEFA Nations League match with a score of 1-0. He became a member of the club when he was four years old and signed his Academy scholarship contract in July 2016.
He received an education at St. Bede’s College, a prestigious private institution, with Manchester City footing the bill for his tuition. Foden was not played for City’s encounter against Celtic in the group stage of the Champions League on December 6, 2016, despite being part of the matchday squad that was selected by head coach Pep Guardiola. The match ended in a 1–1 draw at home. In July 2017, Foden was selected to be a part of Manchester City’s squad for the club’s pre-season tour of the United States. During this tour, he started both a 4–1 win against Real Madrid and a 0–2 loss to Manchester United. His performance against Manchester United was particularly noteworthy.
Foden made his debut for Manchester City on November 21, 2017, in a Champions League match against Feyenoord. He came on as a substitute for Yaya Touré in the 75th minute of the match. Prior to this, Foden had made many appearances off the bench at the beginning of the 2017–18 season. He made his Champions League debut at the age of 17 years 177 days, making him the fourth-youngest English player to ever compete in the tournament. On December 6, 2017, Foden broke the record formerly held by Josh McEachran to become the youngest English player to start a UEFA Champions League match. He did it at the age of 17 years and 192 days, and he did so in a loss to Shakhtar Donetsk by a score of 2–1.
Jude Bellingham, who was 17 years old and 113 days old at the time, surpassed Phil Foden’s record to become the youngest Englishman to start a match in the Champions League. This historic event took place on October 20, 2020. Foden also made history by becoming the first player in the league to start a match after being born in the year 2000. On December 16, 2017, he made his first appearance in the Premier League in the 83rd minute as a substitute during his team’s 4–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. He took the field in place of lkay Gundogan.
Foden entered the game as a late substitute for Sergio Aguero in the English Football League Cup final on February 25, 2018, at Wembley Stadium. He helped City win the game against Arsenal by a score of three to zero. The following month, he broke Kieran Richardson’s record to become the youngest English player to start in a knockout match in the Champions League. He did it at the age of 17 years and 283 days in a victory over Basel that ended in a score of 4-0. On May 13, he established a new record by becoming the youngest player in Premier League history to be awarded a winner’s medal.
This accomplishment of his will be acknowledged in the Guinness World Records book that will be published in 2020. On August 5, 2018, Foden started for City in the FA Community Shield against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium. He played a total of 75 minutes and assisted Sergio Aguero’s opening goal of the game, leading City to a 2–0 victory over Chelsea. This victory earned Foden his third winner’s medal of the calendar year. On September 25, 2018, he assisted Riyad Mahrez and then scored his first goal as a senior for Manchester City in the final minute of injury time to secure a 3–0 victory over Oxford United away from home in the third round of the EFL Cup.
On the 6th of January 2019, Foden scored his first goal at the Etihad Stadium, which was also City’s second goal in their 7–0 victory over Rotherham United in the third round of the FA Cup. This was Foden’s first career goal at home. Three days later, in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals, Foden scored once more while helping City demolish Burton Albion 9–0. The match was the first leg of the semi-finals. Foden scored his first goal in the Champions League on March 12, 2019, against Schalke in the second leg of the last-16 contest that City was playing against them. City won the match 7–0 (10–2 on aggregate).
As a result of his actions, the club tied the record for the highest winning margin in the knockout stages of the competition that they had previously held. At the age of 18 years and 288 days, he became the youngest player in the history of Man City to score in the Champions League with his goal. He was also the youngest player in the history of England to score in the knockout rounds of the competition with his goal. He made his debut in the league for the club at the beginning of the next month, in a game that they won 2-0 against Cardiff City. At the time, he was the youngest English player to do so in the league since Daniel Sturridge in 2008. Following the game, City manager Pep Guardiola addressed the media and stated that he anticipated Manchester City player Phil Foden to be a major contributor “for the next decade.”
