Ocean Vuong, whose birth name was Vinh Quoc Vuong, and born on October 14, 1988, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is a Vietnamese-American author whose writing often examines topics such as queerness, the immigrant experience, and war trauma. After spending more than a year in a refugee camp in the Philippines, Vuong and his family moved to Hartford, Connecticut, in the United States, when he was only two years old. Before that, they had fled Vietnam for the Philippines.
When they first arrived in the United States, not a single member of his family could speak English. Vuong’s mother was the principal breadwinner for the family and worked as an employee at a nail salon. She was the source of most of her son’s subsequent creative writing inspiration.
After a client of hers explained that the ocean links nations all over the globe, including the United States of America and Vietnam, she decided to title her son, who was then two years old, Ocean Vuong. Vuong’s first experience with the English language and literary expression was during their time together in kindergarten. Vuong received his secondary education at Glastonbury, Connecticut, at Glastonbury High School, recognized for its high academic standards.
During his senior year of high school, he confided in fellow Glastonbury High School alumni Kat Chow that he “realized he had to move away from Connecticut.” Vuong attended Manchester Community College for a while before transferring to Pace University in New York to pursue a degree in marketing. Shortly after beginning his employment there, he concluded that the position “wasn’t for him.”
After that, he enrolled in Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, where he got his Bachelor of Arts in English while studying the literature of the 19th century written in English under the tutelage of the poet and writer Ben Lerner. He attended New York University for his Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry and graduated with honors.
Night Sky with Exit Wounds was Vuong’s first full-length collection of poetry, and it was released in 2016 after he had completed two chapbooks. The book was hailed with praise from literary critics and quickly gained prominence in the world of literature. It won several prestigious awards, including the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Whiting Award, and the Forward Prize for the finest debut collection of poetry, amongst other accolades.
A few poems in the group deal with conflict and bloodshed; in fact, one of the most memorable poems in the collection combines the words of a Christmas hymn with vivid accounts of the fall of Saigon in 1975. In addition, stories about queerness and immigration are included in this book.
In On Earth, We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Vuong’s first book, the author explores topics such as the lineage of families and the concept of being different. After its release in 2019, it quickly became a top seller in the New York Times and was awarded the New England Book Award for fiction. A letter is written by the protagonist of this epistolary book, whom his family calls Little Dog. The letter is addressed to the protagonist’s illiterate mother.
Within the larger setting of Hartford in the 1990s, the novel focuses on Little Dog’s coming of age within the framework of his family, comprised of Vietnamese immigrants. The book describes Little Dog’s teenage experiences, from struggling with his family history to fumbling through his first gay relationship, all skillfully portrayed against the harsh backdrop of the opioid crisis. Written in writing that is so flowing that it nearly melts into poetry, the book is a record of Little Dog’s adolescent experiences.
In August 2020, Vuong was announced as the seventh author to contribute to the Future Library initiative. The project, which accumulates original works by authors each year from 2014 through 2114, will be unread until the gathered 100 results are ultimately published in 2114. The project itself will take place between 2014 and 2114.
Vuong made the following observation regarding his participation in the project: “So much of publishing is about seeing your name in the world, but this is the reverse, putting the future ghost of you forward. You and I will have to perish for us to get these texts. That is an inspiring goal to write toward, so I will let it percolate in my mind for a while.
Vuong has discussed the role that fiction plays in his moral development. In response to a question about On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, he said, “Fiction is at its most powerful when it poses a moral dilemma.” When it ventures out into the world and searches for an answer, we could not pursue the inquiries this life because the associated expenses are too high. Fiction and other forms of narrative art allow us to experience these issues vicariously without any real risk to our own lives.
Northampton is located in Massachusetts, where Vuong makes his home. At New York University, he is a tenured Professor of Creative Writing. Time Is a Mother was Vuong’s second book of poetry, which Vuong released in April 2022. The novel depicts sadness and the loss of a loved one, and in part, it is the author’s meditation on the passing of his mother amid the agony and dread caused by the COVID-19 epidemic.
Vuong’s body of work has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including a “genius grant” from the MacArthur Foundation in 2019 and a Ruth Lilly fellowship from the Poetry Foundation. In addition, the publication Foreign Policy named him one of its 100 Leading Global Thinkers for 2016.
After the release of Night Sky, Vuong became an associate professor in the MFA for Poets and Writers program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He did this shortly after the program’s inception. In 2022, he was granted tenure in the Creative Writing Program at New York University.
