Li-Young Lee Bio

Li-Young Lee was born to Chinese political refugees in Djakarta, Indonesia, in 1957. Both of Lee’s parents were born in China. Dr. Lee was instrumental in the establishment of Gamaliel University in Indonesia. However, anti-Chinese feelings started growing in Indonesia, and Lee’s father was imprisoned and jailed as a political prisoner for a whole year. Following Mr. Lee’s release from prison, his family traveled to the United States through Hong Kong, Macau, and Japan.

They eventually settled there in 1964. Lee and his parents relocated from Seattle to Pennsylvania, where Dr. Lee went to seminary and subsequently became a Presbyterian preacher in the town of Vandergrift, in a tiny area. Even though his father read to him regularly when he was a youngster, it wasn’t until Lee was a student at the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied under Gerald Stern, that he began to create poetry on a more severe level.

Lee’s poems often use narrative, personal experience, or recollections to initiate their probes of the universal, even though he is sometimes characterized as a superbly lyrical poet. During an interview with Tina Chang for the Academy of American Poets, Lee discussed his conviction in the interconnectedness of all things.

He said, “If you rigorously dissect it, you realize that everything is a shape of the totality of causes.” What is another word for the whole set of contributing factors? The Known Universe. Therefore, everything is a representation of either the cosmos or God.

In the forward to Lee’s first poetry collection, Rose (1986), Gerald Stern wrote that he was “amazed by the large vision, the deep seriousness, and the almost heroic ideal” of Lee’s poetry. New York University bestowed its Delmore Schwartz Memorial Poetry Award upon this collection of poems. The City in Which I Love You (1990), Lee’s subsequent collection, was likewise met with widespread acclaim upon its release. It was awarded the Lamont Poetry Selection, now known as the Laughlin Prize.

This prize is the only one to be presented in honor of a poet’s second published book. Peggy Kaganoff, writing for Publishers Weekly, said that Lee’s recollection of his boyhood and his father, The City in Which I Love You, “weaves a remarkable web of memory from the multifarious fibers of his experience.” In addition, Kaganoff pointed out that Lee’s “images are economical yet fluid, and his language is often startling for its brave honesty.”

In his book, published in 1995 under the title The Winged Seed: A Remembrance, Lee follows his family’s journey from Indonesia to Pennsylvania. This memoir is renowned for both its captivating narrative and its lyrical language. According to the son, the authoritative person who represented the father exemplified ruthlessness, Christian charity, inspiration, sacrifice, dedication, and deep insight.

We trace the inner evolution of the author from his boyhood in the 1950s to the current day, as well as his adaptability to the new world and new conceptions of reality, in this lyrical but austere representation of a family in contemporary China.

According to M.L. Schuldt in Rain Taxi Review of Books, Lee’s third novel, the My Nights (2001), deals less clearly with childhood, family, and memory and goes inward “for a transfiguring kind of introspection.” Schuldt said, “Lee suffers through the inability to sleep to reflect on the self’s urge for total presence.” And much as in the two books that came before it, Lee gets at his insights by using a syntax that is flexible and twining and iconic diction.

The William Carlos Williams Prize was given to the author for the work. Lee has said that the “confusion” that preceded the composition of Book of My Nights inspired his subsequent collection, which was published in 2008 and titled My Eyes. Lee expressed his hope that Behind My Eyes will be “clearer than Book of My Nights” in an interview he gave to the journal Poets & Writers.

I believe that to come to this book; I had to walk through a genuine wilderness, complete with tangled vines and trees, as well as being lost in Book of My Nights, experiencing bewilderment about who I am and what is going on, as well as confusion about what language is, what a poem is, and why I am writing. I hope that’s not as complicated as it sounds.” The lyrics in Behind My Eyes, according to Alex Lemon, “always extend the boundaries of what one might feel from a graceful arrangement of words.” The Undressing (2018) is Lee’s most recent book of poetry to be published.

According to Lee, he views each poem as a “descendant of God.” When questioned about works by poets and writers with errors, Lee explained: “There are beautiful poems that have errors. There are gaps in perception and comprehension, but those imperfections become a part of the poem’s integrity, which is why I still get the impression that those poems are God’s offspring.
