Manuel Obafemi Akanji is a Swiss professional footballer who was born on July 19, 1995. He currently plays center defender for Manchester City in the Premier League and for the Switzerland national team. Akanji’s full name is Manuel Obafemi Akanji. The local club in Wiesendangen is where Akanji got his start in the sport when he was a youngster. In May of 2007, Akanji made the switch to FC Winterthur, where he played for their Under-18 squad and then with their second team. During this time, he also participated in the club’s youth program. After appearing in two games for Winterthur during the second half of the 2013–14 season, he was given the opportunity to start every game for them in the Challenge League for the 2014–15 season.
On April 15, 2015, it was reported that Akanji would be moving to FC Basel in order to play in the Swiss Super League during the 2015–16 campaign. On September 26, 2015, he made his debut in the Swiss Super League after coming on as a substitute to play against FC Lugano. Akanji, who was trained by Urs Fischer, came out on top in the Swiss Super League at the conclusion of the 2015–16 Super League season and the 2016–17 Super League season for the second time in a row. This was the club’s 20th overall championship title and their eighth consecutive title in a row to win the championship. They were also victorious in the twelfth iteration of the Swiss Cup, which meant that they had completed the club’s historic “double” for the sixth time.
Basel qualified for the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League by virtue of their title as Swiss Champions and began competition in the Group stage. Akanji participated in all six of the team’s games, playing the entire allotment of ninety minutes in each contest, which was essential in the team’s achievement of the second-place finish in the group and advancement to the next round. The news that Akanji had moved to Borussia Dortmund was shared by Basel on the 15th of January, 2018. Akanji completed his transfer to Borussia Dortmund on January 15, 2018, during the winter transfer window. The transfer was reportedly completed at a cost of 18 million euros.
He put his signature on a contract that is valid for four and a half years and runs until June 2022. On September 27, Akanji scored his first goal for the club as well as his first goal in the Bundesliga in a win over 1. FC Nurnberg by a score of 7–0. Akanji came under fire from a variety of quarters for making mistakes that cost Dortmund dearly while they were attempting to compete with Bayern during the 2019–20 season. One of the primary players that was called attention to as a weak link in the team was Akanji. Akanji reportedly joined the Premier League champions Manchester City on September 1, 2022, signing a contract that would keep him with the club until 2027 for a reported sum of £15 million.
He made his debut for City five days later, starting in a victory away from home against Sevilla in the group stage of the Champions League. City won 4–0. On September 17, he made his first appearance in the Premier League against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which was an away game that they won 3–0. He received the most votes from his peers for the month of October’s Player of the Month award. On May 17, 2023, he scored his first goal for the club and in the Champions League with a header against Real Madrid in the home team’s 4–0 victory in the semi-final second leg of the match. The header was deflected by Éder Militao. Akanji logged more minutes on the field for Manchester City than any other defender in the Premier League during the 2022-2023 season.
Akanji was a part of the Switzerland Under-20 National Team on two separate occasions. His first game occurred on September 7, 2014, and it was a tie with the German U-20 national team. The score was 0–0. Beginning in 2014, he was a member of the Switzerland U-21 team, and on March 26, 2015, he made his debut for them in a match against the Italian U-21 team that ended with a score of 0–3. On June 9, 2017, Akanji made his debut with the senior team, helping Nigeria to a victory over the Faroe Islands by a score of 2-0 in a World Cup qualification match. He participated in all three-quarters of the game. He was selected to be a part of the 23-man roster that will represent Switzerland at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Akanji participated in the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals in May of this year, where the squad he was on finished in fourth place. He received a call-up to the national squad in 2021 for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. On September 24, 2022, Akanji scored his first goal for Nigeria in a senior international competition, helping the team to a victory over Spain in the UEFA Nations League by a score of 2–1.
In the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, Switzerland faced Portugal on December 7, and he scored the lone goal his team would need to advance. Portugal won the match 6-1.
