Kathie Lee Gifford Bio

Kathryn Lee Gifford is a French-born American television presenter, singer, songwriter, actress, and author. Her full name is Kathryn Lee Gifford (née Epstein; she was born on August 16, 1953). Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee was a talk program that she and Regis Philbin co-hosted from 1985 until it ended in 2000. Gifford is also well-known for her stint as co-host of the fourth hour of NBC’s Today Show alongside Hoda Kotb, which lasted from 2008 till 2019. She has been nominated for eleven Daytime Emmys, and she took home her first Daytime Emmy in the category of Best Newscast in 2010 for her work on the Today Show.

Gifford’s first role on television was in the 1977–1978 season of the syndicated version of Name That Tune. In this role, Gifford played Tom Kennedy’s singing sidekick on the game show. In addition to that, she was a contributing NBC News correspondent and made infrequent appearances on the first three hours of the Today Show. In 1976, Kathie Lee wed Paul Johnson, who was active in the Christian music industry as a songwriter, arranger, producer, and publisher. After getting divorced from her first husband in 1982, she later wed Frank Gifford, a sportscaster and a former NFL player.

In 2015, he passed away. Kathie Lee is an author and musician who has published multiple books and studio albums. Kathryn Lee Epstein was born in Paris, France, to American parents Joan (born Cuttell; January 20, 1930 – September 12, 2017), a singer, and Aaron Epstein (March 19, 1924 – November 19, 2002), a musician and retired United States Navy Chief Petty Officer. Gifford was given the name Kathryn Lee Epstein at birth. During the time that Gifford Epstein was born, Aaron Epstein and his family were living overseas in France. Gifford spent her childhood in Bowie, Maryland, and completed her secondary education at Bowie High School.

Gifford’s paternal grandpa was a Jew from Saint Petersburg, Russia, while her paternal grandmother had Native American blood. Gifford was named after her paternal grandfather. Her mother, a relative of the author Rudyard Kipling, was of French Canadian, German, and English origin, while her paternal grandfather was of Irish and Scottish descent. Gifford experienced a conversion to Christianity at the age of 12, after watching the video The Restless Ones, which was produced by Billy Graham. She spoke these words during an interview with Larry King: “I was raised with many Jewish traditions and raised to be very grateful for my Jewish heritage.”

Gifford was a member of a folk group known as “Pennsylvania Next Right” while he was a student in high school. The group was a frequent performer at school assemblies. Gifford continued her education at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, majoring in both acting and music after she graduated from high school in 1971. She worked for Anita Bryant at her home in Miami as a live-in secretary and babysitter for one summer in the early 1970s.

This took place in Miami. Her first regular appearances on national television were as a vocalist on the game show Name That Tune, which was hosted by Tom Kennedy in the late 1970s. On the show, she would sing snippets of songs, and the participants would have to determine which songs those snippets belonged to. Gifford’s career began to take off in the 1970s when he appeared as a vocalist on the television game program Name That Tunes with Tom Kennedy. In 1978, she became a member of the cast of the Hee Haw spinoff show Hee Haw Honeys, which did not have a long run. In the early 1980s, she also worked as a correspondent and a replacement anchor for the morning show “Good Morning America” on ABC.

Gifford took over for Ann Abernathy as co-host of The Morning Show on WABC-TV on June 24, 1985. Regis Philbin continued to anchor the show solo. After the program, which was called Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee and debuted in 1988, began airing on a national scale, Gifford gained widespread notoriety across the United States. Her descriptions of life at home with her sportscaster husband Frank, son Cody, and daughter Cassidy were broadcast in the morning on TV during the 1990s, and fans tuned in to hear them.

In 1990, TV Guide asked its readers to vote for the television personality they thought was the most attractive woman, and Live! ran a satirical campaign to encourage viewers to select Gifford as the winner of the poll. In the end, Gifford was victorious in the poll, accumulating more than four times the number of votes that were cast for Jaclyn Smith and Nicollette Sheridan, who came in second and third, respectively.

During the course of the Daytime Emmy Awards, both Philbin and Gifford were considered for the position of Outstanding Talk Show Host a combined total of eight times between the years 1993 and 2000. On July 28, 2000, Gifford announced her departure from the show.NBC made the announcement that Gifford will be joining its morning show Today on March 31, 2008, and would be co-hosting the fourth hour of the show with Hoda Kotb under the moniker Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda.

This event signified her return to morning television; in many regions, she broadcast immediately after her previous show, which is now titled Live with Kelly and Mark. Gifford’s hour did not directly compete with her previous show in the majority of markets because the fourth hour of Today airs live at 10:00 am ET and Live with Kelly and Ryan airs live at 9:00 am ET. Ann Curry and Natalie Morales have been replaced by Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford. The numbers for the fourth hour of Today suggested that there were 1.9 million viewers in the weeks leading up to Gifford’s appearance.

The fourth hour of Today with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb garnered an average of 2.15 million viewers in 2014, representing a 13% rise in comparison to the show’s 2008 ratings. On December 11, 2018, it was disclosed that she will be departing from Today in April 2019; her departure is scheduled to take place. Her last appearance on The Today Show was on April 5, 2019, and it was celebrated with a celebration that included a film including her children Cody and Cassidy Gifford. They were awarded the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host in 2019.
