Keyshia Myeshia Cole is a well-known American singer, songwriter, and television personality. Cole was born Keyshia Johnson on October 15, 1981, in the United States. Cole got her start in the music industry as a background vocalist for MC Hammer. She was born and raised in Oakland, California. 2005 saw the release of her first proper studio album, titled The Way It Is, following her signing with A&M Records.

The album was nominated for two awards at the 2006 Soul Train Music Awards and achieved a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). After the success of the album, Cole went on to star in the reality television series Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, which aired on BET for three seasons and went on to become one of the most-watched shows in the history of the network.

Just Like You was Cole’s second studio album, and it was released in 2007. The album yielded three R&B songs that reached number one on the charts: “Let It Go” (which featured Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim), “I Remember,” and “Heaven Sent.” It also got Cole four nominations for the Grammy Awards. The RIAA awarded the album its platinum certification after it achieved the number two spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

Her third studio album, titled A Different Me (2008), was welcomed with generally excellent reviews and went on to become the second album of her career to debut at number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list as well as number two on the Billboard 200. The record, which was a financial triumph, was awarded the platinum certification by the RIAA.

The singles “I Ain’t Thru” (with Nicki Minaj) and “Take Me Away” were both featured on Cole’s fourth studio album, which was titled Calling All Hearts and was released in 2010. On the Billboard 200, her fifth studio album, titled Woman to Woman (2012), reached its highest position at number 10. It resulted in the release of the single “Enough of No Love” (which featured Lil Wayne), which reached number ten on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at its highest point. During the same year, she appeared as a cast member in the reality television series Keyshia & Daniel: Family First.

The album “Point of No Return,” which was released in 2014 under the label “Interscope,” was followed by “11:11 Reset,” which was issued in 2017 under the label “Epic.”Cole’s voice is so soulful that it has earned her the reputation of being called the “Princess of Hip-Hop Soul” by music reviewers. Her body of work has been recognized with a number of prestigious honors and prizes, such as an ASCAP Award and a Billboard Music Award, among others.

One-on-One with Keyshia Cole was a chat program that she presented on the Fox Soul syndicated television network from 2019 to 2020. Francine “Frankie” Lons (1960-2021) and Virgil Hunter, a boxing trainer, are her parents. She was named after her mother. Cole has ancestry from both the African-American and Mexican cultures. Her biological mother struggled with substance abuse, particularly an addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol.

When she was two years old, she was given the surname Cole by family friends Leon and Yvonne Cole, who later became her adoptive parents. Cole is the middle child of four, with younger sisters Elite Noel and Neffeteria Pugh and older brothers Sean and Sam. His older sister is named Neffeteria Pugh. Cole first worked with MC Hammer when she was just 12 years old. Her brother Sean, also known as Nutt-So, was the one who introduced the two of them to each other.

Later on, she became acquainted with Tupac Shakur, and he made a promise to assist her in launching a career as a singer. He asked her to compose a hook for an upcoming project of his at the time, and it was on that same night that he was shot in an unexpected drive-by shooting, which ultimately led to his passing six days later. When she was 16 years old, she signed up to be a member of the East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC), which is a community-based youth group.

Cole received his high school education at Fremont High School in Oakland, California, before transferring to Tracy High School in Tracy, California, where he received his diploma. Cole relocated to Los Angeles when he was 18 years old in order to pursue a career in music. During this period, Cole worked with local musicians from her hometown of Bay Area, California, such as D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony Toni Tone and Messy Marv.

In the year 2002, she was brought before Ron Fair, A&R for A&M Records. After hearing an incomplete version of one of her songs, he decided to sign her to the label and began mentoring her. Cole’s first single, “Never,” was released as the second single from the soundtrack to Kevin Rodney Sullivan’s comedy film Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004) in March of 2004. “Never” was a collaboration between Cole and the American rapper Eve.

In February 2005, Keyshia Cole collaborated with DJ Green Lantern to create a mixtape titled Team Invasion Presents Keyshia Cole. The mixtape includes reimagined versions of hip-hop instrumentals and fragments of songs. On June 21, 2005, Cole released her first studio album, titled The Way It Is, through A&M Records. The album made its debut at number six on the Billboard 200 chart and sold 89,000 copies in its first week of release.

Jadakiss, Chink Santana, Metro City, and Eve all make cameos on the album, which was produced by Cole, Ron Fair, Sean Garrett, Kerry Brothers Jr., John Legend, Chink Santana, and Kanye West, amongst others. The album also has guest performances from other artists. The songs “I Changed My Mind,” “(I Just Want It) To Be Over,” “I Should Have Cheated,” and “Love” were all derived from this album and released as singles. All of these songs were included on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart on Billboard, with “I Should Have Cheated” and “Love” making it into the top ten.

Cole’s vocals and the musical topics explored in The Way It Is were singled out for appreciation by members of the music press immediately following the album’s initial release. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and it earned her various awards, including a nomination for an NAACP Image Award and two nominations for a Soul Train Music Award at ceremonies that took place in 2006, respectively. Cole performed as a supporting act on Kanye West’s Touch the Sky Tour, which ran from October 2005 all the way through December of that same year, in order to further promote the album.

Cole was featured on “(When You Gonna) Give It Up to Me” by Sean Paul, which was included on the soundtrack of the 2006 romance dance film Step Up (2006). The song was released in June of that year. It was a top 20 hit in a number of other countries, including Canada, Switzerland, and Finland, and it peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. It was reported on July 9, 2006, that Cole had signed a contract with BET for a reality series that would be titled Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is. The first episode of the series, which chronicles her personal life as well as the tensions between her family and her professional career, debuted three days after the announcement of the series.
