Kay Ryan Bio

Kay Ryan was born on September 27, 1945, in San Jose, California, United States. She served as the Poet Laureate of the United States from 2008 to 2010, during which time she was known for writing snappy, sardonic lines about everyday things with immaculate technique, humor, and intellect.

Ryan spent her childhood moving to several small communities in the Central Valley of California. There, her mother worked as a part-time elementary school teacher, while her father had several other professions (including oil well driller, chromium miner, and Christmas tree salesman). Ryan first attended Antelope Valley College, located in Lancaster, California.

However, she quickly changed to the University of California, Los Angeles, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1967 and a Master of Arts in English in 1968. She moved to northern California in 1971 and began teaching English as a second language to students at the College of Marin in Kentfield onpart-timeShe continued to teach this class at the beginning of the 21st century.

Ryan had been writing poetry since she was 19, but she was still unclear about her actual calling, so in 1976 she decided to go on a bicycle tour across the nation. In the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, she realized she might have a successful career as a writer. She toiled away for the next 20 years in a literary vacuum, but readers, critics, and the mainstream poetry establishment eventually took note of her work.

The poetry of Marianne Moore and Robert Frost has been compared favorably to that of Ryan in several reviews. In addition to the often-mentioned connection with Moore, several commentators have also found affinities with the poets May Swenson, Stevie Smith, Emily Dickinson, Wendy Cope, and Amy Clampitt. This is in addition to the relationship with Moore. However, the tight structures, weird rhymes, and ethical judgments she employs position her more squarely in the lineage of Marianne Moore and, more recently, Amy Clampitt.

Reviewers of Ryan’s poetry often comment on her humor, oddball personality, and sneakiness, while Jack Foley draws attention to the inherent seriousness of her work. He says the following in his review of the book Say Uncle: “There is, in short, far more darkness than ‘light’ in this brilliant, limited volume.”

Kay Ryan is a serious poet who writes serious poetry, and the planet that she calls home is also quite serious. Ryan can make people laugh, but his humor is rarely always entirely cutting edge. Her poem “Outsider Art,” which Harold Bloom chose to include in the book The Best of the Best American Poetry 1988–1997, is an excellent example of the disjointed aspects she explores in her writing.

Additionally, Ryan is well-known for her copious use of internal rhyme. She refers to her unique ways of engaging internal rhyme as “recombinant rhyme.” She asserts that she had a difficult time “taking end-rhyme seriously,” as a result, she used recombinant rhyme in her work to give it shape and form. Ryan asserts that she cannot utilize other forms of expression since doing so would be “like wearing the wrong clothes.”

A fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004, and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize in 2004 are just some of the honors bestowed upon Ryan. She also won an award from the Ingram Merrill Foundation in 1995, the Union League Poetry Prize in 2000, and the Maurice English Poetry Award in 2001, both for her collection Say Uncle.

Her poems have been published in three anthologies competing for the Pushcart Prize, and have been chosen for inclusion in The Best American Poetry four times. One of her poems, “Outsider Art,” was selected by Harold Bloom to be included in The Best of the Best American Poetry 1988–1997. Ryan has been one of the fourteen Chancellors of The Academy of American Poets since he was elected in 2006.

The National Book Critics Circle announced the finalists for the 2011 awards on January 22, 2011, and Ryan was one of them. Ryan was presented with a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship on September 20, 2011. She was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2012, and President Obama presented it in 2013.
