Joo Pedro Cavaco Cancelo is a Portuguese professional footballer who was born on May 27, 1994. He now plays as a full-back or wing-back for Manchester City, who competes in the Premier League, as well as for the Portugal national team. He is considered to be among the most talented fullbacks in the entire globe. Cancelo started his career with Benfica in 2012 when he was a member of the club’s reserve squad. Two years later, in 2014, he was elevated to the main team after having gone through Benfica’s junior academy.
After that, he was given to the La Liga club Valencia for the remainder of the 2014–15 season as a loan, and Los Ches made the transfer permanent in the summer of 2015. Cancelo spent the 2017–18 season playing for Inter Milan of Serie A on loan from his parent club, and he was named to the league’s Team of the Year at the conclusion of that season. Cancelo’s play piqued the eye of Italian rivals Juventus, who reportedly paid a transfer fee of €40.4 million to get him in 2018. Cancelo joined Juventus in 2018. Cancelo won both the Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana in his solitary season with Juventus, which was also the only year he played for the club.
The English club Manchester City is rumored to have paid a hefty fee of €65 million (or £60 million) to acquire his services in 2019. Since then, he and the team have won three trophies in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup. In the season 2020–21, he was a vital contributor to Manchester City’s run that took them all the way to the final of the UEFA Champions League. Cancelo made his debut with the Portugal senior squad in 2016. Prior to that, he had been capped by Portugal at every youth team level, earning a total of 75 caps and scoring three goals throughout his career.
Additionally, he was a member of the Portugal under-21 team that competed in and advanced to the final of the 2015 UEFA European Championship. He was selected to be a part of Portugal’s squad for the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals, which were held on Portuguese land. As a member of Portugal’s team, he won the first iteration of the league. Cancelo began his football career with the local club Barreirense after being born in the Barreiro neighborhood of the Setbal District. In 2007, when he was 13 years old, he became a member of the Benfica junior system and played fullback for the club.
Cancelo made his first appearance with Benfica’s first team on the 28th of July, 2012, in a friendly match against Gil Vicente. Cancelo started at right back for the entire match and played all 90 minutes. Despite the fact that he was listed with the reserve squad, he was discussed as a prospective replacement for Maxi Pereira in the seniors; until 2013, he also represented the juniors, and on May 18 of that year, he scored two goals that proved to be the deciding factor in a victory over Rio Ave that earned them the national championship. Cancelo made his debut with the Benfica first team on January 25, 2014, when he entered the game as a late substitution in a 1–0 victory over Gil Vicente at home for the Taca da Liga, which was ultimately won.
This was Cancelo’s first competitive game with Benfica. On May 10, after they had already been proclaimed league champions, his first appearance in the Primeira Liga took place, and he started in a loss to Porto in the match known as O Clássico, which ended with a score of 2–1. Cancelo joined Valencia on a loan for one year with an option to purchase for €15 million on August 20, 2014, bringing his total transfer fee to €20 million. In spite of the fact that Peter Lim was the owner of his economic rights, Valencia was able to finance the transfer of the player thanks to Lim’s purchase of the Spanish club.
On September 25, he made his debut in La Liga by participating in his team’s home victory over Cordoba by a score of 3-0; After coming on as a substitute, he made his debut in the Copa del Rey round of 16 match against Rayo Vallecano. This was his first appearance in the competition. He would also move to the right flank on occasion, and later on his outstanding performances, especially against Levante on April 12, 2015, when he was named man of the match, led to him being moved to that position more frequently.
Throughout the course of the season, he was employed as a backup right back behind Antonio Barragán. He finished the season with a total of 13 appearances across all competitions. Cancelo’s play was a key factor in Valencia qualifying for the Champions League, which led to the player agreeing on May 25 to a permanent contract with the Spanish club until June 30, 2021, for a transfer fee of €15 million. Cancelo will remain with Valencia until the end of that season.
Cancelo became a starter for Los Che during the following season, which led to his debut in the UEFA Champions League on September 16, the same month. In that game, a 2–3 loss to Zenit Saint Petersburg at home, Cancelo scored his first goal for Los Che. As a result of this, he moved up to the fifth spot on Valencia’s all-time scoring list in the Champions League despite being 21 years old and 107 days old at the time. Cancelo got his first goal in the Copa del Rey competition on December 2 against Barakaldo, which resulted in a 3–1 victory for Cancelo’s team. After suffering a combined 8–1 loss to Barcelona throughout the competition, Valencia was eliminated from contention. Additionally, he scored for the first time in the league the following year on April 20 against Eibar at the Mestalla Stadium, capping off a 4–0 victory for his team.
Cancelo’s performances during the 2016–17 season were a little bit below their previous levels. Cancelo made a few mistakes that led to him committing a penalty during Valencia’s first league encounter, which was a loss to Las Palmas by a score of 2–4. Cancelo’s play improved with time, and as a result, the new coach Cesare Prandelli decided to play him on the right flank and use him in more situations. This was despite the fact that Cancelo made several mistakes along the way.
Cancelo maintained a consistent spot in the starting eleven throughout the entirety of the season, splitting his time between the right back position and the right flank position. On April 2nd, he scored his first goal in the league during his team’s victory over Deportivo La Coruna by a score of 3-0. After the game was over, Cancelo made a “shush” motion against Valencia’s fans, who had condemned him for his defensive errors, but he quickly apologized for the gesture after realizing what he had done.
