Joan Van Ark Bio

Joan Van Ark is a well-known American actress who was born on June 16, 1943. The character of Valene Ewing, which she played on the daytime serial series Knots Landing, brought her the most fame. She made her debut on Broadway in 1966 in the play “Barefoot in the Park” and has been a life member of The Actors Studio. For her performance in the 1971 production of The School for Wives, she was recognized with both a Theatre World Award and a nomination for the Tony Award in the category of Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Van Ark got her most well-known role, that of Valene Ewing, in 1978. Valene Ewing was a main character for 13 seasons on the spin-off show Knots Landing, which aired from 1979 through 1992 and was a continuation of the CBS series Dallas. She was honored with the Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Actress in both 1986 and 1989 for her work on the television show Knots Landing. She departed the program in 1992, but she came back for the last two episodes of the series in 1993 as well as the miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac in 1997. As the presenter of the Tournament of Roses Parade that was broadcast on CBS in 1985, she was recognized with a nomination for a Daytime Emmy Award. She had a starring role on the daytime serial series The Young and the Restless from 2004 to 2005.

In 2013, she appeared in an episode of the new Dallas television series, playing the character of Valene again. Dorothy Jean Van Ark was Van Ark’s mother, and Carroll Van Ark, an advertising and public relations consultant from Holland, Michigan, of Dutch heritage, was his father. Van Ark was born in New York City. His mother died in 1983. Carroll Van Ark’s grandfather’s father came to the United States from the Netherlands when he was a young man. Both of the author’s parents were also authors. She was one of four children and grew up in Boulder, Colorado, with her three brothers and sisters.

After the interview, Harris suggested that Van Ark submit an application to the Yale School of Drama, which Harris had attended when she was in her early twenties. Following in Harris’s footsteps, Van Ark received a scholarship to attend Yale University’s Drama School. Van Ark was one of the very few individuals who were granted admission to Yale graduate school without having previously completed their undergraduate studies at Yale. According to reports, Van Ark was the only female student attending the university at the time. She was just a student there for a single year. After some time had passed, Harris made an appearance on Knots Landing playing the role of Lilimae Clements, the mother of Valene Ewing, the character played by Van Ark.

After Harris passed away in 2013, Van Ark announced the formation of the Julie Harris Scholarship during a memorial ceremony held on Broadway. This scholarship offers financial assistance on a yearly basis to one actress who is enrolled in the Yale Drama School. The first contribution was given by Alec Baldwin, who, in Knots Landing, portrayed the role of both Harris’ son and Van Ark’s brother. The Yale Drama Department was renamed the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University in 2021 when it became tuition-free the same year. Her first role in a professional production was in Molière’s The Miser, which she played at the Guthrie Theater alongside Hume Cronyn and Zoe Caldwell. Van Ark’s career started with the Guthrie Theater.

After that, Cronyn and Jessica Tandy appeared in Death of a Salesman at the Guthrie Theater. Jessica Tandy also starred in the production. After spending a season performing at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., she made her debut as the character Corie in the production of Barefoot in the Park which was performed by the national touring company and directed by Mike Nichols. Van Ark made her Broadway debut as Corie at the Biltmore Theater later that same year and became one of the successors of Elizabeth Ashley, who had previously appeared in the original Broadway production three years earlier. In 1966, she recreated the role at the Piccadilly Circus in the critically acclaimed London Company when she replaced Marlo Thomas, who had pulled out due to a ligament injury.

Following her marriage, Van Ark relocated to Los Angeles with her new husband, and it was there that she began accumulating television credits. In 1971, she returned to Broadway, where she was nominated for a Tony Award and won a Theatre World Award for her portrayal as Agnès in Molière’s The School for Wives, which was directed by Stephen Porter. She got both of these honors for her work.

In the 1972 horror picture Frogs, which hit theaters on March 10th, Van Ark appeared with Ray Milland and Sam Elliott. Frogs was released in theaters on March 10th. The science fiction movie The Last Dinosaur, which was shot in Tsuburaya Studios in Tokyo as well as on location in the Japanese Alps, had Van Ark as a co-star alongside Richard Boone. The movie was filmed in Japan. The motion film was supposed to be shown in theaters, but it was unable to get a distributor, thus it was shown as a television movie in February of 1977 instead.

In addition, Van Ark provided the voice for Spider-Woman in the animated series of the same name that aired in 1979 but did not last very long. After many years of performing in a variety of guest parts on television, she finally landed the character that would become her most famous, Valene Ewing, on Dallas in 1978. This role was initially intended to be a one-time performance. Van Ark maintained a strict schedule and flew a lot during the week of her Dallas debut since she was concurrently filming an episode of The Love Boat in Los Angeles and doing voiceover work for Estée Lauder in New York. Dallas was being shot in Texas, and Van Ark’s Dallas debut took place during that week.

However, writers eventually incorporated the character into a number of extra episodes, and in 1979, Van Ark took the Valene character over into the long-running spin-off, Knots Landing, in which she co-starred for thirteen out of the show’s fourteen seasons. She departed in 1992, but she came back for the show’s last two episodes in May 1993. During the length of the program, her character was married not only three times to her husband Gary Ewing but also to two other men during that period. Ted Shackelford portrayed the role of Gary Ewing in the series.

After signing a deal with Universal Studios, Van Ark appeared with Bette Davis in The Judge and Jake Wyler, a television movie and pilot for a series that was shown in 1972 but was not picked up by NBC for further production. In the season one episode of M*A*S*H titled “Radar’s Report” which aired in 1973, Van Ark portrayed the character of Erika. Van Ark was also a regular cast member on the television comedy Temperatures Rising and We’ve Got Each Other, both of which were canceled after a brief run on the air.
