Jack Ham Bio

Jack Raphael Ham Jr. is a retired American football player who played linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1971 to 1982. Ham was born on December 23, 1948, and he is a former professional football player. The National Football League (NFL) regards him as one of the best outside linebackers in the league’s history.

The year 1988 saw Ham’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the year 1990 marked his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame too. His college football team, the Penn State Nittany Lions, was his team of choice. In the middle of 2019, the newsletter of the PSU Alumni Association ranked Ham as the top athlete among the 100 best athletes in the history of the university, taking into account all sports and all prior football players.

At Pennsylvania State University, Ham was a member of the collegiate baseball team. The Penn State Nittany Lions finished with records of 11–0, 11–0, and 7–3 during his three years as a starting linebacker for the team. Ham was a co-captain during his senior year of high school, 1970, and he completed 91 tackles, and four interceptions, and was named an All-American.

He finished his career with 251 tackles, 143 of which were unassisted. It wasn’t until 1989 that he equaled the school record for most punts blocked, which he established in 1968 with three. The College Football Hall of Fame honored him with an induction in the year 1990.By the results of an online poll conducted by fans, the Big Ten Network selected Ham to be a part of “The Mount Rushmore of Penn State Football” on December 11, 2014.

In addition to Ham, John Cappelletti, LaVar Arrington, and Shane Conlan were also there to pay their respects. During the 1971 National Football League Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers picked Ham in the second round, which was the 34th overall pick. Even as a rookie, he was able to secure the starting position at left linebacker. His first-team All-Pro status lasted for six years, and he was selected for the Pro Bowl eight years in a row.

The Steelers coach Chuck Noll and his colleague Andy Russell both said that Ham was the “fastest Steeler for the first ten yards, including wide receivers and running backs.” Ham’s extraordinary speed was a blessing from God. A citation is required. Although he was one of the few outside linebackers who could play pass defense, he was also one of the best safeties in the National Football League.

He was recognized as a player who could not be misled and was seldom out of position, even though he was a furious opponent in terms of hitting. “He was one of the more intelligent players to ever play that position,” said Maxie Baughan, a former linebacker in the National Football League. He could analyze plays. He is impossible to deceive in any way.

Some people have considered Ham to be a better outside linebacker than Lambert was while he was playing middle linebacker for the Steelers during their dominant decade of the 1970s. This is even though supporters do not adore Ham as much as they do his comrade Jack Lambert, and opponents do not fear Ham as much as they do Lambert.

Ham had a total of 25 sacks, 21 fumbles recovered, and 32 interceptions throughout his career. However, the stats for sacks are not genuine since the National Football League did not start tracking sacks until Ham’s last year in the league, therefore he only has three sacks, according to the official record. Because Ham had some of the most impressive football instincts ever discovered in a linebacker, it is clear that he had a natural talent for making huge plays.

Throughout his 12-year career, Ham was a member of four teams that won the Super Bowl. However, because of an ankle injury, he did not participate in Super Bowl XIV. Ham spent his whole career with the Steelers throughout his entire career. In the history of the National Football League, he holds the record for the most takeaways by a non-defensive back with 53. Additionally, his 32 interceptions place him in third place among linebackers, behind only Don Shinnick and Stan White.

After Ham announced on February 17, 1983, that he would be retiring from active player status, he went on to pursue a career as a radio presenter. Following his time as a color commentator for national radio broadcasts of National Football League games, he went on to anchor a program in Pittsburgh with Mark Madden on ESPN Radio 1250 whenever the NFL season was in session.

Ham is presently working as a sports commentator for Penn State Radio Network. In addition, he is also a regular contributor to the Westwood One radio network as an analyst. Ham has a minority ownership stake in the Johnstown Tomahawks, who compete in the North American Hockey League. The Tomahawks’ organization presented a bobblehead to the first one thousand fans who attended the Cambria County War Memorial Arena on January 31, 2013, to show their appreciation for Ham. The game was between the Tomahawks and the Port Huron Fighting Falcons.

After researching the advantages of medicinal marijuana for treating ailments associated with playing football, Ham became an advocate for the use of marijuana for medical purposes in 2017. He also wants the National Football League to lower its position against the usage of marijuana in general. Ham had a surge of motivation after seeing the cognitive degeneration of contemporary Nick Buoniconti, in addition to other present and previous players, including his former colleague Mike Webster. This occurred even though Ham himself was in good condition.
