A German-born American actress who has worked in cinema, theater, and television, Sheryl Lynn Lee was born on April 22, 1967, in the United States. After completing her studies in acting at the undergraduate level, Lee moved to Seattle, Washington, to pursue a career in theater. It was there that she was cast by David Lynch in the roles of Laura Palmer and Maddy Ferguson in the television series Twin Peaks, which aired in 1990, and in the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, which was released in 1992.
Immediately after the conclusion of her work on Twin Peaks, she made her comeback to the stage, performing the title role in Salome on Broadway with Al Pacino. Her film credits include the part of Astrid Kirchherr in Backbeat (1994), the main role in the drama Mother Night (1996), the role of Katrina in John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998), and the part of April in Winter’s Bone (2010). She also played the role of April in Winter’s Bone (2010).
She has been in recurring roles on several television programs, including One Tree Hill (2005–2006) and Dirty Sexy Money (2007–2009). In 2017, she returned to the character of Laura Palmer in the reboot of Twin Peaks that the Showtime network produced. Following several years spent going to school, Lee relocated to Seattle, Washington, where she participated in several theater productions and made appearances in several commercials.
At the Empty Space theatrical in Seattle, which is no longer in operation, she received training from the theatrical director Mark Jenkins.Lee’s debut job on television was in the television series Twin Peaks, in which she played the character of the late Laura Palmer. David Lynch, the creative director of the film, had the intention of casting a local girl from Seattle “just to play a dead girl” to save money. That girl from the neighborhood turned out to be Sheryl Lee.
After seeing a press shot of her in Seattle from one of the plays she was playing in at the time, Lynch invited her to try out for him. She is now performing in one of the plays. “But no one — not Mark, me, anyone — had any idea that she could act, or that she was going to be so powerful just being dead.” The picture of Lee wrapped in plastic, together with the portrait of her as the homecoming queen, became one of the most lasting and unforgettable images from the presentation.
It was during the process of Lynch shooting the home video that James Hurley takes of Donna Hayward and Laura that Lynch became aware of the fact that Lee had something unique. “She did do another scene the video with Donna on the picnic and it was that scene that did it.” As a consequence of this, Sheryl Lee became a semi-regular addition to the ensemble, making appearances in flashbacks as Laura and becoming a recurrent character in the role of Maddy Ferguson, Laura’s cousin.
Later on in the series (a part that was created because Lynch, who was pleased with her talents, wanted to give her a more significant role on the show), she was given a more significant role. Her subsequent collaboration with Lynch came in the form of her performance as Glinda the Good Witch in the 1990 film Wild at Heart. In addition, she had a role in the prequel to Twin Peaks, titled Fire Walk with Me, which included more information about the events that transpired before Laura Palmer’s death.
Lee was hailed by the reviewers for her portrayal, which garnered her nominations for Best Actress at both the Independent Spirit Awards and the Saturn Awards. Even though the film itself was a critical and commercial disaster at the time of its release, Lee received compliments for her performance. Many people have referred to Lee as a “Scream queen” for her work in the television series Twin Peaks, particularly for the sequences that took place in the otherworldly Black Lodge.
At the Circle in the Square Theatre in 1992, Lee played the role of Salome with Al Pacino in the Broadway production of Oscar Wilde’s play Salome. Robert Allan Ackerman was the director of the production. Among the actors who appeared in the play were Suzanne Bertish, Esai Morales, and Arnold Vosloo. Backbeat is a biopic about the early career of The Beatles, and she was cast in the role of Astrid Kirchherr in the film Backbeat in 1994. Her co-star in the film is Stephen Dorff.
In the years that followed, Lee played the role of Liza in Gary Walkow’s 1995 adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novella Notes from Underground, opposite Henry Czerny. She also played the role of Helga and Resi Noth in the 1996 romantic war film Mother Night, which was based on Kurt Vonnegut’s 1961 novel of the same name. Additionally, she starred alongside Craig Sheffer in the film Bliss (1997), and she played the role of Katrina in John Carpenter’s 1998 film Vampires, opposite James Woods and Daniel Baldwin.
There was also a major part for her in the criminal thriller picture Angel’s Dance, which was released in 1999, with Kyle Chandler and Jim Belushi. Additionally, she portrayed the character of Dr. Sarah Church in the short-lived series L.A. Doctors, which aired from 1998 to 1999 and only had one season. It has been speculated that she as well as Phoebe Augustine, who portrayed her companion Ronette in the television series Twin Peaks, had an appearance in the film Mulholland Drive (2001) directed by David Lynch.
