Bio

Hank Williams Jr. or Bocephus, the stage name of Randall Hank Williams born May 26, 1949, is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Hank Williams, a country music performer, is his father. Williams was conceived on May 26, 1949, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and named Randall Hank Williams. His father gave him the name Bocephus after the ventriloquist dummy used by Grand Ole Opry comedian Rod Brasfield.  He was reared by his mother Audrey Williams after the passing of his father in 1953. Williams started off by covering his father’s songs and adopting his father’s style, carrying on the legacy of his famous father. Williams made his debut on television in a 1964 broadcast of ABC’s The Jimmy Dean Show, where he has sung numerous songs about his father at the age of fourteen. He appeared as a guest on Shindig! later that year.

He was given the stage name “Hank Williams Jr.” by Williams’ mother Audrey, who also requested that he continue performing his father’s songs and establish himself as a “Hank Williams impersonator.” Williams did have several country hits thanks to his recordings, many of which were versions of his father’s songs, but as he grew older, he lost hope, which was made worse by uninterested and unfriendly audiences who insisted on hearing only Hank Srtunes. .’s Williams’ “mainstream country work has always been among Nashville’s best,” according to Rolling Stone in 1976.  After the Nashville establishment eventually and somewhat reluctantly accepted his new sound, Williams’ career started to flourish. He was now so well-liked that he could no longer be disqualified from receiving significant industry honors.

Throughout the 1980s, he produced a tonne of music, sometimes recording and releasing two albums a year. Numerous songs produced a long line of hits, including Family Tradition, Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, Habits Old and New, Rowdy, The Pressure Is On, High Notes, Strong Stuff, Man of Steel, Major Moves, Five-O, Montana Cafe, and many others. Williams released 21 albums between 1979 and 1992, all of which were given at least gold certification by the RIAA. These albums included 18 studio albums and 3 compilations. He amassed a total of 44 Top Ten hits over his career, including a total of 10 No. 1 songs, including a run of 30 Top Ten records on the Billboard Country charts between 1979 and 1990, including eight No. 1 singles.

He simultaneously had nine albums on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart in 1982, all of which were original compositions and not collections. Williams received the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in 1987–1988. He received the same honor from the Academy of Country Music in 1987, 1988, and 1989. Born to Boogie was the record that brought him the most acceptance and popularity.

Williams Jr. rose to fame as a country music superstar in the 1980s thanks to his catchy melodies and hard-edged, rock-influenced country. Williams’ songs frequently shot to the top of the charts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including “Family Tradition,” “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound,” “Old Habits,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Born to Boogie,” and “My Name Is Bocephus.”

Williams recounts in Ken Burns’ 2019 documentary Country Music how he came to understand that “Daddy doesn’t need me to advertise him.” He cut connections with his mother when he turned 18 in 1967 and started writing and recording more of his own music, but he still had to deal with irate crowds. Around this time, he also started abusing drugs and alcohol heavily. He relocated to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in an effort to start again, where he started performing with Waylon Jennings, Toy Caldwell, and Charlie Daniels, among other Southern rock performers. With the release of Hank Williams Jr. and Friends in the middle of the 1970s, he started to pursue a musical path that would ultimately make him famous.

Williams almost perished on August 8, 1975, while mountain climbing in southwest Montana. He suffered many skull and face fractures when the snow under him collapsed while he was climbing Ajax Peak on the continental divide west of Jackson. The semi-autobiographical made-for-television movie Living Proof: The Hank Williams Jr. Story detailed the occurrence. He underwent multiple reconstructive surgeries during his two years of recovery, and he also had to relearn how to talk and sing. Williams developed a beard, started donning sunglasses, and started wearing a cowboy hat in order to conceal the wounds and deformities caused by the collision. Since then, his trademark ensemble of a beard, hat, and sunglasses has emerged; he now hardly ever goes anywhere without them.

Williams collaborated closely with his old friend Waylon Jennings on the song “Once and For All” when recording and releasing One Night Stands and The New South in 1977.He had an appearance with the Shake Russell-Dana Cooper Band in Season 5 of the PBS program Austin City Limits in 1980. Williams’ music career began in 1964 with “Long Gone Lonesome Blues,” one of his father’s numerous well-known tunes.

He gave his father’s singing voice in the 1964 movie Your Cheatin’ Heart. Additionally, he recorded a duets CD with his father. Many modern musicians came to visit his family while he was a boy, influencing and teaching him different musical instruments and genres Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Fats Domino, Earl Scruggs, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis were a few of these influential people. When Williams was eight years old, he took the stage for the first time to perform his father’s songs. He went to John Overton High School in Nashville, Tennessee, where he brought his guitar to music lessons and performed at choir concerts and pep rallies.
