Bio

Hank English multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter Brian Marvin were born Brian Robson Rankin on October 28, 1941. He gained notoriety as the lead guitarist for The Shadows, a band that backed Cliff Richard and then Marvin, Welch & Farrar and specialized in instrumental music. Brian Robson Rankin, the father of Hank Marvin, was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. He was a pianist and banjo player as a child. He made the decision to learn the guitar and get dark-rimmed spectacles after hearing Buddy Holly. Following the first dissolution of the Shadows in late 1968, his 1969 self-titled solo instrumental album, which included a guitar set to orchestral background, was released to tremendous acclaim.

The song “Sacha,” which was “found” by two DJs at 2WG Wagga Wagga, peaked at the top of the singles list in New South Wales, Australia.  Shadows reunions caused Marvin’s solo career to be put on hold, first for a Far East tour and “live” record in 1969, then for a studio album in 1970, and once more in the early 1970s.  In addition to instrumental albums, he has also produced albums with predominantly vocals, just acoustic guitars, and even one with a guitar orchestra. Duane Eddy made a guest appearance on the song “Pipeline” from Marvin’s album Into the Light in 1992. The Guitar Player Tour was the name of his solo tour of the UK in 2002. For their 2004 Final Tour, Marvin and the Shadows came back together. A 2005 European tour was also organized. The final tour dates were performed by Cliff Richard and the Shadows in 2009 and 2010.

Marvin collaborated twice with French guitarist Jean-Pierre Danel on his top-ten hit and gold-certified albums from 2007 and 2010. When published as an EP from Danel’s compilation The Hit List, their two tracks later reached the top of the iTunes charts in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Poland, the United States, South Africa, and Thailand. They also reached the top 10 in France, Norway, Finland, and Germany. Additionally, Marvin contributed to one of Danel’s DVDs and wrote the preface to his book on the Fender Stratocaster. Welch and Bennett received the OBE for their contributions to music in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, but Marvin turned it down for “personal reasons.”

Marvin received a BASCA Gold Badge Award on October 28, 2009, in honor of his distinctive musical contribution. Since 2002, he has continued to put out solo instrumental albums, all of which have debuted in the UK’s Top 10 albums. 2017 saw the release of Without a Word, his most recent solo album. Marvin and Welch created Marvin, Welch & Farrar in 1970. This vocal harmony trio was unpopular with both Shadows and modern music enthusiasts. They changed their name to “Marvin & Farrar” in 1973 for a vocal record before going back to the Shadows in late 1973 for the instrumental album Rockin’ with Curly Leads. With their song “Let Me Be the One,” The Shadows placed second representing the UK in the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest.

Marvin wrote “Driftin'”, “Geronimo”, “Spider Juice”, “I Want You to Want Me” for the Shadows, and “The Day I Met Marie”. Together with Ian Samwell, he co-wrote Richard’s 1961 smash song, “Gee Whizz It’s You.” He co-wrote Cliff Richard’s classic songs “On the Beach,” “I Could Easily Fall in Love with You,” “Time Drags By,” and “In the Country” with Welch, Brian Bennett, and John Rostill. [Reference needed]He collaborated with Richard on two “Cliff & Hank” success songs, his own song “Throw Down a Line”, and “The Joy of Living” in 1969 and 1970. Richard also had a hit with his song about the environment, “Silvery Rain.”

[Reference needed] Olivia Newton-John covered “Silvery Rain” for her 1981 album Physical. On the songs Parade and Leon from Roger Daltrey’s third solo album, One of the Boys, in 1977, Marvin provided the lead guitar. Along with John Farrar and Don Black, he co-wrote Olivia Newton-1977 John’s smash song “Sam” and produced records for British entertainer Des O’Connor.

Marvin worked with French keyboardist and composer Jean Michel Jarre in 1988 on the song “London Kid” for Jarre’s album Revolutions. Jarre also invited Marvin to perform at his performance, Destination Docklands, at London’s Royal Victoria Dock. Jarre claimed that the success of the Shadows had impacted and motivated him to focus his career on instrumental music.

In a parody of Nielsen’s Police Squad! movies, Marvin co-starred with Leslie Nielsen in a Red Rock Cider commercial. Hey, you over there, in the shadows!” Nielsen yells in a bar scene, and Marvin then moves forward. Marvin literally plays the guitar and “accompanies” Nielsen as Nielsen sings the commercial’s jingle when Nielsen asks Marvin to “accompany” him, which is police speak for driving someone to the station.

While starting his career, he decided on his stage name. It is a combination of his boyhood moniker Hank, which he used to set himself apart from pals who also went by the name Brian, and the first name of country and rockabilly artist Marvin Rainwater. He convinced his parents to let him move to London in April 1958 so he could pursue a career in the music industry. At The 2i’s Coffee Bar in Soho, London, Marvin, then 16, and Bruce Welch, a friend from Rutherford Grammar School, met Johnny Foster, Cliff Richard’s manager. Foster was contemplating Tony Sheridan as a guitarist for Cliff Richard’s UK tour. Instead, he made the job offer to Marvin. Marvin consented to join the Drifters, as Cliff Richard’s band was known at the time, as long as Welch had a spot.

At a nearby Soho tailor’s shop where Richard was getting fitted for a pink stage jacket, Marvin first ran into Richard. At Cliff’s parents’ house in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, The Drifters held their first rehearsal with Richard. The Drifters changed their name to the Shadows in 1959 after legal action was threatened by members of the American band of the same name.
