Bio

Gucci Mane, a stage name for Radric Delantic Davis, is an American rapper and record executive. Along with fellow Atlanta-based rappers T.I. and Young Jeezy, he played a key role in developing the hip-hop subgenre known as trap music, notably in the 2000s and 2010s.  Gucci Mane made his recording debut with Trap House in 2005. His second album, Hard to Kill, was released in 2006. His third studio album, back to the Trap House was released in 2007.

Davis was born on February 12, 1980, in Bessemer, Alabama, to social worker Vicky Jean Davis and former U.S. serviceman Ralph Everett Dudley. The Davis family has a long history in the military. His maternal grandpa, Walter Lee Davis, participated in the Pacific Theater of World War II and aboard the USS South Dakota. His paternal grandfather, James Dudley Sr., served in the Navy for twelve years as a cook during World War II. Davis’s father was a military service member stationed in Korea for two years.

Davis’ mother had a son named Victor Davis from a previous relationship when her parents first met in 1978. When Davis was born, his father had fled to Detroit, Michigan because the authorities wanted him for trafficking heroin and crack cocaine. Davis adopted his mother’s last name since his father was not there to sign his birth certificate. Davis was a student at Ronald E. McNair High School, where he had high marks and was well-liked by his classmates, when he started turning his side job as a drug dealer into a profession.  Davis’s first drug encounter was smoking marijuana with a lady he had a crush on, but for the first several years that he was distributing drugs, he never really used drugs himself. With the female with whom he often used cannabis, he began a friendship-with-benefits relationship that gave rise to a little psychological addiction. Young Davis liked composing poetry, and around the age of 14, he started rapping.

After his first arrest, Davis started to really consider music and put out La Flare on Str8 Drop Records. It was dispersed around East Atlanta on roughly 1000 CDs that were printed with it.  After La Flare was released, Davis made the decision to launch a record label after being motivated by Master P.  In 2001, Davis started serving as Lil Buddy’s manager. Davis joined the Sign Yourself Click in 2002 and afterwards collaborated with SYS Records. Davis established his own label, LaFlare Entertainment, and collaborated with producer Zaytoven.

He went to New York looking for a distribution contract but came home empty handed. Then he met Big Cat, the owner of Big Cat Records. Davis, who ultimately made the decision to collaborate with the label that helped Khia gain notoriety, released “Black Tee,” a single in reaction to Dem Franchize Boyz’s smash song “White Tee,” as well as “So Icy,” a joint effort with another up-and-coming local rapper Young Jeezy.  Davis continued to work the underground while prepping for the release of his first album after securing a distribution agreement with Tommy Boy Records.

By 1995, Davis had been selling narcotics for about two years, but he had never been involved in a violent incident. When Davis was 15 years old, a guy stopped him as he was riding his push bicycle and pointed a Desert Eagle to his head. Following the incident, Davis was stripped of all valuables and started to carry a.380 calibre revolver.  Davis faced multiple additional potentially fatal circumstances, such as a dispute with a neighbourhood street gang known as “the East Shoals Boys” in 1997. Due to the conflict, Davis’ buddy Javon was almost killed by beatings and grown guys came into McNair High School in search of Davis.  When Davis and several friends engaged the East Shoals Boys in a fistfight, the dispute was settled, and the group has since left Davis alone.

Davis received a HOPE Scholarship at Georgia Perimeter College in 1998 after graduating from McNair High School with a 3.0 GPA. He enrolled in a computer programming course, however he seldom ever showed up and was expelled in 2001 when an undercover police officer discovered him in possession of crack cocaine. Davis was given a 90-day county prison term, followed by probation.

Davis’s maternal grandmother reared him as a child while his mother pursued her education in college. Davis’s mother was a teacher who began teaching him to read from an early age. She also devoted the majority of her time to teaching him Bible verses. Davis attended kindergarten and the first several elementary school grades at Jonesboro Elementary as his first school. When Davis was six years old, his elder half-brother Victor took him to a Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J concert as an introduction to hip hop.

Davis and his father had a distant connection before relocating to Atlanta with his mother; they would visit at sporadic intervals, but those trips ceased when Davis’s father started prioritising his children in Atlanta above Davis after having two children with another woman. When Davis was nine years old, his mother and he relocated to Atlanta due to familial issues in Bessemer. Davis’s mother was about to move in with her lover in Atlanta but changed her mind at the last minute. Later, they moved in with a person Davis’s mother had known from church.  After being evicted from the residence, Davis’ family remained without a permanent place to live until his father helped them find one at a Knights Inn.  Davis grew up in a neighbourhood with a high crime rate.

Davis went to Cedar Grove Elementary School when his mother transferred him and Victor to East Atlanta. Despite not playing any school sports, he thought of himself as athletic and performed well in school overall. Davis was a drug dealer who mostly sold cannabis together with his elder brother. Davis began his profession as a drug dealer in the eighth grade after selling marijuana on his own and using Christmas money to buy crack cocaine.

In 2009, Gucci Mane produced a series of critically acclaimed and financially successful mixtapes before releasing The State vs. Radric Davis, his fourth studio album and first gold-certified album. Between 2014 and 2016, he served time in jail. In 2016, he was freed with numerous new retail initiatives, including Everybody Looking, which received positive reviews from critics. Gucci Mane’s “Black Beatles,” a song he made with Rae Sremmurd in 2016, became his first number-one record on the US Billboard Hot 100 list. Since then, he has published a number of albums; his most recent, Woptober II, was made available on October 18, 2019.

Over the course of his career, Gucci Mane has put out over 71 mixtapes in addition to 14 studio albums. He started his own record label, 1017 Records, in 2007. The Weeknd, Drake, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Selena Gomez, Mariah Carey, Usher, Bruno Mars, and Marilyn Manson are just a few of the musicians he has collaborated with. Rappers from Atlanta including Young Thug, Migos, Rich Homie Quan, 21 Savage, and Lil Yachty have all cited him as a “avatar of East Atlanta” and the most significant underground artist of the 2000s as a result of his mixtape releases and trap music.
